Needs some tweaking, but all around a great nav system.

I've been using my TomTom ONE for a week and a half or so and overall, I'm quite happy with it. Out of the box or after having been moved a significant distance while off, the unit takes about a minute or so at most to determine its position. From a warm start, it's usually a matter of seconds.
Route calculations are generally finished quickly, as are recalculations when you fail to follow the route. Since the shortest rout distance-wise isn't always the fastest, I've diverted from the TomTom's original route and it usually recalculated a new route within moments of me going 'off course.'
I've only run across a couple downsides to the TomTom ONE, neither of which is too serious. First, the maps (at least in the DC/MD/VA metro area) are a few years out of date. There are a number of roads which just aren't in the unit's database. Some streets 'lose' their name for some reason. For example, one section of a street on the map may be labeled as 'Main Street' and another part of the same street may be "Unnamed Road." City names can be kind of iffy as well. When trying to input a specific address, I've often had to resort to entering the address by zip code since the TomTom's map database considers my home to be in a neighboring city name-wise and it won't find my street name in the city in which I actually live.
The second thing that kept me from giving the device 5 stars is the client interface on the computer. The client is supposed to allow the user to access the ONE and perform certain functions on-screen, but apparently is missing some component to actually emulate the unit. I've not gotten a response from TomTom regarding the problem, but have read elsewhere online that they know there's an issue with the client.
Overall, the TomTom ONE is a very nice, basic navigation system. Updated maps and a fixed version of the PC client software will hopefully be forthcoming and would make it a 5 star product.
Very disappointed

We purchased this GPS to use for our move across the country. The first one we purchased worked for about 2 days then simply would not turn on. After following the troubleshooting guide, it still would not turn on so we exchanged it for another of the same. This one worked for about 2 weeks and ended up doing the same thing. We exchanged it for a Garmin and are much happier.
I agree with the other reviewers who stated that the maps are out of date. To say the least! There is a big shopping area that has got to be at least 6 years old in our neighborhood, but the ONE showed it to be nothing! Many of the newer roads, POI's and addresses were not on the map. Even when we were at home, the ONE showed us to be parked in a field and the apartment complex we live in is 10 years old! Also the GPS was slow to find the satellites.
We happen to be moving to CA, so I'm glad I read the review about not being able to mount things to your windshield. The tomtom ONE does not come with nearly as many accessories as the Garmin, and you can only mount it to the windshield, which I didn't really like anyway.
We paid more money for the Garmin, but it is definately worth it!
Good but ....

I bought the TomTom One and returned it because the Garmin Nuvi 360 gives me the name of the street I am turning into. This is a big plus. I don't have to take my eyes off the road to confirm that I am turning into the correct street. Last week my co-worker and I decided to do a test. We picked a destination and found both the TomTom and Garmin took us essentially to the same destination when we entered an address. We had to take a trip to a hardware store. I picked Shopping and then House and Garden. The Garmin showed me Lowes is 2.1 miles and Home Depot is 2.3 miles away. The TomTom didn't show the stores. I think Garmin has a more up to date map.
Pretty Good

I just took this unit on a 5000 mile road trip from Chicago to San Antonio, to Phoenix and back. The unit was worth the price, especially for finding routes off the interstate system.
The GPS was almost always very precise. Sometimes it would suddenly place me a couple hundred feet away and give me instructions for getting back to where I already was. The voice directions used the word "yards" when it should have said "feet". The POI database was often incorrect. It would tell me that I had reached my destination when it had actually put me in the middle of nowhere. Gas stations would turn out to be closed down and new ones wouldn't show up. In some areas, POIs are about a half mile off.
The PC software did not work with the device, so I could not set-up itineraries in advance of the trip. When I returned home, I saw that the program update was available, which included the fix. Now, if only the POI database were updated and the units fixed in the dialogue, the product would rate 5 stars.
SIMPLICITY AT ITS FINEST...

Being a fan of the old analog GPS systems (that's road maps to you) for years I decided to try my luck on the TomTom One (New Edition). I figured that the price of portable GPS systems had declined enough for the average American to afford, (and with the discount that TomTom is presently offering I decided now was as good as time as any to purchase).
The unit itself is ready straight out of the box. The internal battery comes charged and the package also includes a car charger to your cigarette lighter, a USB cable for connecting to your PC, a windshield mount, computer software that includes TomTom Home for easy organization of your TomTom, an instruction manual with easy start guide, and finally a replaceable 1GB SD card loaded with maps and points of interest throughout America and Canada.
Upon initial use of the TomTom One, I found the unit to be light (approximately 7 ounces) and very easy to set up. The onscreen instructions were clear, precise, and specific. I was asked a series of questions that helped me customize my TomTom...my street address, the voice setting I preferred...etc. The 3.5 inch touchscreen with 320 x 240 resolution is large enough to use comfortably and was crystal clear even in direct sunlight. Within five minutes of getting the unit out of the box I was ready to go.
The TomTom One (using its SirfStar III chipset) found my position on the map within 60 seconds. Very impressive considering the 5 minute wait owners are used to with prior GPS systems. I decided to take a 30 mile drive from within city limits to my parents house, which is located in the sprawling cornfields of Illinois.
Once the route was calculated the TomTom One warned me that exact street addresses (house numbers) located in the country were not included in the directions but it would still take me to the road I was searching for. Fair enough.
The route was calculated within seconds, I was given a choice of using either 2D or 3D onscreen maps, and a female voice started giving me turn by turn instructions towards my destination. This is what I have been lacking! It was like having my own personal tour guide for the entire country.
Somewhere along the drive I decided to test the TomTom One to see what would happen if a wrong turn was made. I made an "incorrect left" down a gravel road and the unit had a new route for me within 25 feet. I was astonished. The country roads in Illinois can get very confusing at times, a driver can get lost quite easy because there are no visible reference points to navigate from. The TomTom One didn't hiccup once, it just recalculated a route and kept right on going.
I arrived at my destination (as promised, the TomTom One took me to the country road I needed but not to the street address itself). I was impressed. With rural Illinois conquered, I decided to test the system's point of interest (POI) database. This seems to be a major negative point with other reviewers but I found the database to be very reasonable considering the fact that places of business close quicker than they open. True...some restaurants weren't included in the system's SD card, but anyone that uses even an "up-to-date" phonebook will tell you they have the same problem. I think the POI database was extensive and as accurate as the driving directions the TomTom gives itself.
What the TomTom One does lack however is any video or MP3 playback capabilities. This, to me, was understood before purchasing the unit and incidentally seemed like an unnecessary feature for a GPS system. Unfortunately, the TomTom One does lack features that I would prefer to have. One of which is text to speech capabilities which would allow the voice navigation to pronounce the names of streets rather than just left or right turns (example: "turn left on Progress Boulevard", as opposed to just "turn right")
Also, I really would have appreciated a user-replaceable battery in this product. It seems that the new electronic trend is to make changing batteries in products an impossible task for consumers, unless they're willing to pay more money. True...almost all portable GPS systems have this same feature but that's my point exactly. Great products with cheap tricks built in.
All in all I give this product a commendable review and star rating. It has saved me so much time and frustration on long road trips that I can't begin to express enough gratitude. Before this product I would use nightmarish, printed-out, Internet maps which had me stopping every fifteen minutes, asking gas station attendants how to get to a certain street. Only to drive in circles for another fifteen minutes and arrive at the same gas station. I used to dread getting lost in unfamiliar neighborhoods, now I welcome the challenge.
Great GPS. Lousy Maps.

5 stars for the GPS unit but 2 stars for the maps. I really liked this device...the size, shape, display, and features. Everything worked very well. It was very easy to setup and use right out of the box. But I had to return it. The maps were terrible. High rate of errors for me and it couldn't find half of the places that I was looking for. I wanted to use for VA, MD, DC, and OH areas. Obviously this is a budget GPS system but for the price I expected either more accurate maps or free updates. I went with a Garmin unit instead. It has none of the map issues this unit does. It uses a different set of maps form a different company. I have heard TomTom is going to change over to the same company that Garmin uses.
I would not buy this product after the bad experience

Update,
After using it for more than a month. I have less favorable opinion on this product. It freezes 3 times within one month. You have to use a pin to push through a small hole to get it response again. I was on the road yesterday and it freezed on me. I did not have a pin with me, so I can not use the product at all when I need it the most. I called their support today, I was told that the product does behave that way sometimes and it is "normal". If I have a choice now, I will buy the Garmin Nuvi 360.
Original post:
I bought the One two weeks ago. I loved it in the first two days. The screen is bright. After it locked to the satellite, it is a great device. However, I noticed that it may take several minutes (up to 7 minutes so far) for it to find its location. So far I have tested it in several different locations around Los Angeles. Once I started it at LAX and it could not find its location. After I drove on highway 105 for 7 min, it finally find its location. Several times it took about 3 to 4 min to find its location in Glendale area after I turned it on. I was lucky that I know where to drive. It is useless if you are in an area that you don't know the rount, unless you have the patient to wait for 7 min.

I got my TomTom One Limited Edition (with SD card slot) on Black Friday sale and I really like it. I have used Garmin Nuvi 350 for a while and liked it too. Both units are comparable in size and in performance, except that the TomTom One is 2.5x cheaper than Nuvi 350. I tested TT and Nuvi to see how they perform in a new housing subdivision in my neighborhood. They made exactly the same mistakes not recognizing new streets and telling me to drive into the same house where both units showed a non-existing road. This wasn't a major setback for me. Maps do need to be constantly updated, but in real life situation these minor errors wouldn't stop me from eventually finding my way around.
br /
br /I compiled a list of more important differences I found between the two units. I listed them as someone who just needs a basic, solid, intuitive and accurate navigation while driving. I don't need the GPS to be a telephone, MP3 player, portable shower, etc.
br /
br /Bad things about TomTom One in comparison to Nuvi 350:
br /- Rather cheesy mounting and not as easy to disconnect as Nuvi. This is a big deal if you need to take it out frequently to hide from unethical passersby or to plan new routes in the comfort of your home.
br /- TT doesn't turn On automatically when you start the car, although it can be set to auto turn Off 10 sec. after the ignition.
br /- The TT doesn't dim automatically to night mode and back like the Nuvi does; you need three taps on the screen to do it.
br /
br /Now the good things about TomTom in comparison to Nuvi:
br /- Two and a half times less expensive, and by that I mean the rock-bottom sale prices for new units ($119 for TT One and $299 for Nuvi 350).
br /- Less pointless talking. I found the constant "recalculating" announcements of Nuvi quite annoying after a while. Spoken street names aren't necessary to me either, but I can see that someone else may find this feature valuable. I preferred the simple spoken announcements of TT.
br /- Although the official TomTom support is apparently lacking, there is a huge unofficial support from TomTom groups and forums out there.
br /- The TT is great for international travel being very popular overseas with maps and new corrections available all over the internet.
br /
br /Overall it was the price that sold me on TomTom. :D

I purchased this unit for my wife(a real-estate agent). I did a lot of comparisions and read a ton of reviews on GPS units, leaving money out of the picture I focused on two things that she needs/uses on a daily basis. Itinerary(multiple addresses) and two possible saftey features. This allows up to 10 addresses for an itinerary that she can rank in her order, This was probably the main reason. Second was safety, this has a buddy system, which allows another tomtom owner to see where you are. Now we have not used this or tested it yet, but it does have some capability for me to track the device(will do in the future). I could not find any other device that allows any sort of tracking/locating. So this won out. The device works great, she loves it. We used it for two vacations and it worked flawless, did not give me the route I wanted to take for our trip to N.C.(which no GPS unit would have been able to do, because I go a specific route), but was still extremely helpful. For our other vacation, I had no clue where I was going and it did a perfect job. It does not say street names, but that is a preference that makes no difference. For the money it is perfect, and I really did not see any other reason to purchase a more expensive model, did not need another mp3 player or photo viewer. I would have gladly spent more if it was needed, but I needed GPS for a real-estate agent, and I could not find anything that was better than the tom tom one V2. (I am not considering buying the V3)

I love my TomTom One. It is a great value for the money and I recommend it highly. There are some things you have to get used to. Tom doesn't measure feet well, but it is fine for miles. Ex: You may be told to make a right turn in 150 ft, but it may be only 25 ft. to the turn. Also, the documentation is poor. The battery can be charged by connecting to your computer, a wonderful feature that you are not told about. Instead, it is suggested that you buy a cable to connect to your house electricity. After I bought it, not only did I not need it but you can't even use it on this version of TomTom.

A friend of mine bought this today, and we set it up together. The TomTom ONE is remarkably user-friendly, extremely easy to set up, and intuitive to operate.
The screen features a nice "driving view" that was unavailable in GPS systems at the time I bought my GPS; this view is more 3D, very easy to read and quite appealing. For the price, it seems to be an incredible value.
The TomTom ONE kit comes with a USB cable that hooks up to your computer and a CD that can be used to manage it over the computer, giving greater flexibility in management. My old GPS can only be managed from the console in my car.
Seeing the capabilities of this portable GPS system, I wished I would have not had a different GPS installed in my vehicle, but instead purchased this unit. The TomTom ONE can be transported and used in rental cars on trips, or in friends' cars, and there are no worries about it being stolen, as it is small enough to stow away in your purse. Versatile, easy to use, inexpensive---what more could you want in an entry-level GPS?

I wasn't sure I would have a need or use for any GPS but now that I have the TomTom I am so glad - I use it all the time. It is accurate, clear, sleek, user-friendly and an overall quality product. I have friends with the GPS built in to their cars and there are ridiculour flaws to the routes. My TomTom in superior! I use it to find new routes to regular commutes/travel and to discover new places to go in neihboring towns and in the city nearby. It is the best purchase and I am thrilled to have it - glad to answer any questions about it too - I'm a big fan!

The TomTom One is extremely easy to use and has been very accurate here in Los Angeles. I'm absolutely amazed with how detailed the street and freeway maps are. There is only one case a driver has to be alert for....directions are for the normal freeway flow, if you're in a carpool lane transitions between freeways are sometimes different than the standard lanes.
It say's you have arrived at your destination when you are still 50 feet away. Other reviewers identified that as a fault, it gives you an opportunity to look for driveways and parking spots.
BlueTooth Inclusion is Misleading

The TomTom One is a truly fantastic device with only a couple of flaws. The first and most glaring of the problems I found with this device is that the marketing department forgot to mention that the inclusion of BlueTooth is only for data collection for certain additional services. Services that cost both a subscription fee and data resources through your cellular provider. It does not include the ability to use your cell phone through the BlueTooth connection. I am truly puzzled why any company would put the hardware in a device and fail to extend the full capabilities of said technology to the consumer.
The other problem is that within California it is illegal to mount a devices like the TomTom One to your windshield but there is no means provided for mounting it in any other way. This is despite the fact that this product was purchased in a California market. This simply strikes me as completely irresponsible. It was clear to me that TomTom knows the suction cup mounting system will not work on a dashboard because they are offering other mounting systems through their web site. For an additional expenditure, of course.
I was quite pleased with how easy the system was to operate. I was only irritated that a, "back," button wasn't programmed into every page. Such a tiny detail would substantially increase the usability of the TomTom One. The advanced features are pretty good, but these too, could use a little polish to really shine. Portability was also a major feature but this feature is also flawed because it doesn't come with a case.
All in all I am pleased with the function and performance of the device while only slightly disappointed that the marketing on the box was misleading. Rerouting was fast and accurate enough to work. In new development areas it was sometimes grossly inna I did take the unit back that I had purchased and decided to continue using an old fashioned map book. The flaws, the price, and the perception that fundamental features were left out gave me the fuel to reconsider the purchase. I personally recommend that you consider the TomTom GO 510, or the TomTom GO 910 if you are looking at the One as a navigation solution. The cellular connectivity is really worth the difference in price if you are BlueTooth capable.

Excellent GPS. However, I have found that the quickest route which seems to be the default is not, often choosing roads that result in a much longer trip. If you can get it to choose the shortest route then it does give very good directions. Menu selections sometimes difficult to select.

This is a fairly compact unit that offers alot of options out of the box. There are a few other voice styles that can be used, updating the basic unit is available and interfaces to your home/laptop computer. My wife thinks its better than the Neverlost system (Hertz) and its easy to setup. Any faults would be the limited offers inside the box expired before I even got it. This included more voices, database updates and a few other add-ons that I would have liked to have seen. Otherwise, this is a very good system to use.

From my experience with the ONE I've found it to be a great device. Having it my car has made driving in the confusing streets of Washington DC so much better, and pushing two buttons to have it guide me home is great. I thought it was very easy to use right out of the box, the voice was easy to understand, and the screen was clear and legible. I think these devices are just going to get more and more popular as time goes by until almost every car in the road has one because they just make life so much easier. The current price for it is amazing, plus I think if you get it before March 31st it comes with a free brand new map update from Tele Atlas which is suppose to be the newest map available on the market.

I used this device for a couple of months before it's battery started acting wierd and I had to return it. I am looking for a new one with some additional features; but if you are a first time GPS user or are not very technology savvy, then this device is the one to go for.
Very easy to use, simple user experience, manageable, light, and clear directions. I did not have any problem at all with this device. It is very proactive and tells you about the next action (turn, bear left/right, take an exit) much before it is due and hence gives you enough time to understand and plan.
The screens are very intuitive and it is very easy to plan a trip, find nearby locations or spots.
Overall, an excellent buy and value for money!
IMHO Better than Garmin Nuvi 350!

Ok, since there's already so many reviews I doubt mine will get read, however I just wanted to add a few points for those considering this and the Garmin Nuvi 350.
br /
br /My experience with navigation units includes OEM GUI based navs in Lexus, BMW Mercedes, the text-based Becker Traffic Pro (used in Porsche's, BMW's, Ferrari, etc.) and now the TomTom One and Garmin Nuvi 350.
br /
br /I purchased two TomTom's as gifts because of the Best Buy rating by Consumer Reports. I really wanted to get the Garmin Nuvi 350 based on advice from a friend who has done a lot of research and said it was the best for the money, but that would be too expensive.
br /
br /Let me tell you, after driving using both units I prefer the One to the Nuvi 350. The Nuvi has more features, great battery life, better voice directions and faster calculation, but the One is clearer/easier to drive to, updates faster in tight areas where there are many turns and can be found for less than half the price.
br /
br /The Nuvi 350 has some nice features; it can play MP3's, it has a long battery life without being plugged in, thus can be used for walking directions, slightly easier to use interface, blue tooth interface for phone and auto dimming. Maybe others... however, most of those features aren't needed in a navigation unit--better save the money and put it towards an unlocked iPhone instead :)). It all boils down to which unit is easier to drive to.
br /
br /When you're in a big city with one turn after another, when you approach an "X" or "Y" intersection instead of "+", when the highways split funny, etc. in those cases I prefer the One. I don't recall once making a wrong turn with the One, however when my friend and I went to New York City (following Nuvi 350 directions), he made 3-wrong turns (didn't get on the correct highway) and lost 15-minutes, according to calculations, before he let me drive his car to actually get us to where we were going. Driving to his Nuvi 350 was a chore compared to the One. I almost took a few wrong turns myself... constantly had to read what's coming up next on the screen (it's TINY); It's dangerous and I'm sure the people driving behind us weren't very happy with the way we were driving.
br /
br /Sorry for the run-ons, but if anyone is considering the Garmin Nuvi 350 over the TomTom One, I seriously hope that you try both before making your decision. I feel that the One is much easier to drive to, which to me is the point of having a GPS navigation unit. TomTom One certainly has some drawbacks to the 350, however given that the One can be found for hundreds cheaper, it's definitely the best buy. Two other friends have also purchased TomTom One's since.

I bought this for a road trip I took recently. First of all, I do like the unit and recommend it, but a few things I wish were better. First, the unit has "locked up" a few times in the couple of weeks I've had it. This means it won't turn on. Hitting reset with a paperclip fixes it, but it happens too often. Second, during the trips it told me to turn in the absolute wrong direction twice. Third, during a trip, it navigated me through a small city, I listened to it and wound up on an 45 minute adventure on some dirt road. It never did get me where I wanted to go, had to turn around and find the main road myself. Don't think this unit allows you to toss out all maps in your car!
The last observation is with the documentation and tomtom website. The site has been down a couple times already and the documentation is thin to say the least. I agree the basic functions are user friendly, but when I want to program do a bit more than basics, it is difficult to find out how.
Overall, still glad I bought it, but wanted to let you know of a couple observations.

For under $300, this product is a no brainer. It is obviously not the best product on the market, but it performs it duties extremely well. The size is just right, large enough to see the screen clearly, yet small enough to tuck away into any pocket. The software is user friendly, and the unit is ready right out of the box. Make sure to update the maps by ordering the DVD from TomTom. Now for the negatives. It is a bit cumbersome attaching the unit to the windshield mount. On top of that, the power cord attaches directly to the unit and not the mount., which requires you to mess with the cord everytime you move the unit. Also, due to the size of the item, a carrying case should be provided, not sold for an additional $20. Overall, the signal is great, screen is crisp, Voices are clear, Software is smooth and the product is worth every penny.
Right on the money.

I'm a closing/settlement agent in the D.C. Metro area and I grew very tired of printing out Google Maps, toting them along with me, and then getting lost when I took a wrong turn. It was embarrassing to have to call a client for directions and even more embarrassing to show up late. With the TomTom, I plug in all my closings for the day ahead of time and scurry from one to the other very efficiently.
The small, compact size was the primary selling factor for me. I considered the Garmin nuvi, but I didn't really need mp3 compatability, photo features, music payback or text to speech features. I just needed something to tell me how to get where I'm going and reroute me if I have to change course. The TomTom One does all of that and more for a great price.
The unit comes with a USB cable to charge and interact with your computer at home, and a car charger for use on the road. It does have its own battery, and I've been able to get ~4 hours of life without it being on the charger. There is a windshield dash mount that is quite nice. You almost don't realize it's an accessory - it blends right in with the rest of the dash. I just quickly remove mine when I'm not in the car to avoid it getting stolen. It's small enough to fit right in my pocket as I go from closing to closing.
The display always shows you the name of the next turn/exit and how far away it is (you get a two-mile advance voice warning on long stretches), so the voice saying "exit right in 2,000 yards" versus "exit onto I-495 West in 2,000 yards" doesn't bother me as it seems to bother other users. I'm always peeking at the display to prepare for the next trun, so the lack of "text to speech" isn't a big deal for me. It's very intuitive and very easy to use.
You will get into an accident if you try to program this thing for a route while it is attached to the dash. I almost did several times until I had the sense to pull over and program the routes off the road. Simple changes are easy, but the touch screen does require a bit of pressure with your finger to get the keys to activate. There is a night mode that helps reduce the glare and relfection of the screen on the windshield. I recommend using it, as teh glare can be quite distracting.
I only have a few complaints. First, there is no bound paper owner's manual. Don't get me wrong, I had the unit up and running in less than five minutes, but I had to install the software CD and use the electronic manual to figure out some advanced features. Secondly, the TomTom Home software has not worked well for me at all on my Macintosh. I can seem to plan routes or do much of anything useful with it.
TomTom likes to tout the TomTom Plus (pay) features (weather, traffic and other updates via your cell phone and Bluetooth), but very few phones and carriers feature this functionality. Verizon and my Treo 650, for example, are not supported. Supposedly with TomTom Plus Traffic, the unit will alert you to any congestion, construction or accidents and work to re-route you. That would have been handy for me, but my phone doesn't support it and it's a bit pricy for the service.
For less than $300, I can't imagine a better-featured GPS. I have the built-in Honda navigation system in our second car, and the TomTom even beats it in some areas of functionality. I haven't experienced any of the inaccuracies that other have complained of as far as maps go and TomTom seems to be pretty good about software updates and the like.
If you need a basic, compact and easy-to-use car GPS, teh TomTom One will not disappoint.

I love this item! I would have given it 5 stars if I could use it to play mp3s also, but it doesn't. I'm still waiting for maps of Mexico TOMTOM! Once tomtom releases them, I'll give it 5 stars. There are a few errors with the latest released US/CANADA map but I really didn't expect them to be perfect either. I think you can notify tomtom of the errors through their webpage.

My wife and I bought this for her parents for Christmas. We played with it the month leading up to Christmas so we could explain it fully to them once we gave it to them.
br /
br /The navigator comes with a suction mount, plug for the cigarette lighter, the USB cable, and a CD-ROM - which we haven't used yet. Being a touch screen display - each menu is very understandable and specific to what you are trying to accomplish. There are some opening questions it asks you for - such as your home address and what locations you'd like it to display while driving (pharmecies, churches, zoos, concert halls, swimming pools, etc.). Those were all very accurate. I was excited to see that there was an option to search all the nearby resturaunts and so forth were all listed by name - Little Caesars, pubs, and the like.
br /
br /The volume is going to be sufficiently loud enough for my father-in-law who sometimes doesn't hear everything.
br /
br /While it doesn't name out street names, it does speak to you about turns - giving you about a 500 yard warning and then when to turn. When you have a lot of immediate turns, it will condense the instructions, "Turn left, then get into the right lane, and take the first right."
br /
br /The routes it has given us so far are accurate. A friend chose to take an alternate route on the way to a certain location - but I followed the TomTom and got there must faster on the route it chose for me.
br /
br /Unless money is no object and you have the desire to keep up with the Jones' - or actually be the Jones' - you will be completely satisfied with this. It is perfect for directions and the menus are self-explanatory, simple, and concise. Inputting directions couldn't be easier. It sorts your results while you type and puts up the streets alphabetically while you continue your typing - then you just select. It also remembers your proximity, so you don't have to re-input your city each time - you can just quick-select from the history it lists on the same screen where you would type in your city.
br /
br /I am unsure what features the more expensive models have. Do they actually provide you the menu of resturaunts, make your reservations, order for you, and pre-chew your food? Then, don't go with this one.
br /
br /If you use Bluetooth technology, then you can also have it communicate through your phone and calculate routes based on traffic and weather. I haven't used that feature - but it is available on this product. With the use of your phone - you can also track other friends who are doing the same thing - and that would make caravanning easier. You can also make yourself "invisible" to them. I assume that means digitally, not physically - but that would be cool too (and dangerous on the roads) - could lead to an insurance nightmare.

I purchased this unit for my daughter and a Garmin Nuvi 350 for myself. The Tom Tom does not speak the name of the street, just says 'turn right in 200 feet' while the Garmin speaks the name of the street. If the name of the street is important to you, either purchase the higher priced TomTom or the Garmin. If just being told to turn is acceptable to you, this unit will work well for you.

TomTom One is an okay product. I have found serveral POI incorrect/missing. I would not give it wonderful reviews, as others have done. The customer service at TomTom is definitely lacking and in my opinion misleading. I would purchase a Garmin if I had it to do over.

We purchased this about 2 months ago and it works relatively well for us. I have a tendency to get lost anywhere, even when I have clear directions, so in those instances it's been great. It reroutes you very quickly and although I have been told several times to "turn around when possible" (especially on new roads) it doesn't do it often. If you ignore it long enough it will reroute again. I don't like the fact that turn by turn directions don't have street names or exit numbers, however. I have accidently turned down the wrong street or gotten off the exit too soon because I am not good at estimating yards and take the turn when it first says turn right, not when it actually wants me to. However, every time I do this it will figure out where I am and reroute me to get where I need to go, so it still meets the function I wanted it for. I like that it is portable and once you get the hang of the functions, very easy to use. I have already dropped it, though, so I plan on investigating a case or cover; something to protect it from my clumsiness. I haven't bothered with the mounting function so I can't speak to that. The points of interest function is great, but be careful. Not all of the listings are accurate; when I tried to find a CVS, it directed me to a CVS company building, not the pharmacy. The GPS didn't distinguish so we couldn't tell until we got there and it was not a pharmacy. It can also be a little tricky to actually find the place that you want in the menu, but it has helped me find restaurants and libraries relatively well. The bluetooth option does not work with my Verizon phone, but for the moment I have not missed the functions. It is, however, disappointing to not be able to use it. Overall, I like it and it works well for us at the moment. When we choose a new one in a few years, though, I would like one that says street names and I will do a little checking for overall compatibility with bluetooth functions.

I bought the TomTom One because I wanted a high level of portability with a legible 3-1/2" screen and also wanted the option of buying maps of Western Europe. The unit is small enough (thin enough) to fit into a jacket pocket, unlike the most feature-laden and more expensive TomTom 510 and 910 models. I considered getting TomTom's Navigator 6, which connects to a Bluetooth phone like my Treo 650, but the screen on the One is about 60% bigger than the Treo's, and unlike the Navigator 6, the One it doesn't require me to set up a Bluetooth connection to use it. Be sure to use a drop of water on the suction cup mount that hold the unit on your windshield; otherwise it will fall off.
You have to be willing to accept that the maps are never 100% up to date, and knowledge of teh locality beats any GPS system. The first day I used it, it told me to go to Boston Logan Airport by the shortest route, but it's not the fastest. Just the same, it gets you where you need to go when you don't have local knowledge, and that's what you buy GPS for in the first place.
It's missing a case and a 120-volt adapter, although you can buy both as accessories. I bought an inexpensive generic case for a digital camera to hold both the One and its 12-volt power cord. It also lacks text-to-speech capability, so instead of telling you, "Turn right onto Beacono Street" or "Bear left onto Interstate 95", it says, "Turn right at the next intersection," or "Bear left onto the motorway." That last phrase shows its Britsh heritage -- even with one of the US voices selected, it tell you to go "straight on" rather than "straight." Personally, I don't think that's a problem, and the name of the street our highway number is displayed clearly in the screen, but it's a matter of personal preference and about a hundred dollars.
Out of the box, took 2 minutes to get it working. To get the full list of features, you should change the preferences to see all the options, and then you can do things like: Change the ABCD keyboard to a QWERTY keyboard; decide whether to display a compass on the screen; change the screen colors; and a lot more. The options seem quite complete to me -- you can customize the display extensively; plan a route in advance and look at it turn-by-turn before you start; and save places you drive to often as "Favorites." For example, I go to Los Angeles frequently I can select it as a destination from a short list of Favorites rather than having to enter it each time I'm headed back to the airport. And you can tell it to avoid freeways, which can be useful in a place like LA.
I'd guess that most GPS units have a similar list of features, but the TomTom One is small enough to dump into a briefcase, large enough to be legible, easy to use. and complete enough to get you where you want to go. It gets four stars rather than 5 because there's no case or AC power adapter, but it's a five-star performer.

My husband borrowed his friends Tom Tom One when we went on vacation earlier this year. It was a godsend. It was easy to use and assisted us with finding places to eat, hotel to stay at along the route and alternative routes if traffic was backed up. We decided to buy one of our own as a result of the positive experience. I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars for the rating for the simply fact that I feel that the unit should have a stylet on the side much like a PDA...but my husband does not. You decide.

I bought a TomTom One GPS in preparation for a cross-country trip to Washington, DC. The device was a lifesaver in a large, strange city when we arrived at night in the rain in flawlessly guiding us to an apartment in downtown DC.
br /
br /But you have to keep your common sense about you. For example, occasionally the device just seemed to lose track of where we were and would give obviously incorrect directions. These were rare occasions, however, and the error was obvious at the time.
br /
br /Another thing to know about these devices is that when you ask for an alternate route it doesn't mean that the entire route will be different. On our trip to DC we wanted to take a route less congested but longer than the shortest/fastest route that TomTom automatically calculates. What I discovered, however, is that TomTom programmed our alternate route for just part of the way and then brought us back to the original routing. So we had the worst of both worlds: longer yet still most of the congestion. Pick a destination along your preferred routing to make sure you don't get sent back prematurely to TomTom's first choice of roads.
br /
br /All in all, though, I love the device and find it very reliable, helpful and reassuring for first-time trips either locally or long distance. The way it keeps constant track of miles and time to your destination, both interim (when applicable) and final, is really helpful.

The TomTom One is one great GPS! We've had Magellans and Garmins, and this is the very best by far. It picks up the satellites very quickly, even while indoors. I especially like the status bar display, giving you remaining time and distance to destination, current time, arrival time, speed, and direction. I also like the auto turn-off option when you turn off external power. Best of all, its 3-D maps and directions are phenomenal. And the price is right. No complaints from me!

I purchased the Tom Tom One a few weeks ago, alot of bang for the buck! The size is great, the audio clear, the graphics and ease of use are wonderful. I solved the problem of the suction cup which is not so good on glass, by buying the dashboard donut on line for $15, which is how I now use my unit. This is convenient, blocks less of the window and dash area, and protects your unit by not having it fall in the car. Also, you do not have to put the unit all the way onto the bracket, which means easy removal when you leave the car. I travel alot so taking the donut with makes using the Tom Tom in rental cars very easy. I should have done this years ago!

Very nice GPS, it came at a great price, lowest even after 2 months of getting it. I have used it numerous times, very user friendly and sleek machine. Works great even on overcast days and in heavy rains (no signal issues here). Its extremely precise in terms of location and provides immediate alternate routes if you miss a turn you were supposed to take. Definitely 10/10. And yes, it arrived in 3 days after placing the order.

I cannot say enough about Tom Tom One 3rd Edition. It PAID for itself. Recently, I got off track in Boston. With all the continuous construction there, it got me back to my destination. Plus, it was great to get me to all my points of interests in Florida. Many points of interests are preloaded into the Tom Tom system, which was a BIG plus. I would not go anywhere without Tom Tom. (In fact, my best friend just bought one, and she is using it on her trip to Utah.) This is a DEFINITE buy!

In the process of returning this, used it several times and whilst it would put me on the correct road it can be several miles off for an individual address. It was placing our rural home address about 600 yards away from its actual position as well as showing and naming roads that do not exist, although it accuratly named roads that do.
When we were looking for a pumkin patch that was at a specific address the unit was 5 miles out - informed us that we had arrived #5561 *** rd when we were at #2619.
Restaurants were not always directly where the unit told us, some were upto 1/4 mile away, not useful if visiting a strange city. Also the points of interest and the tourist attraction features were, in Atlanta for example, very incomplete....the Georgia Aquarium and World of CocaCola (2 very popular sites) were not listed at all, even after updating unit on TomToms web site.
I have a cousin in England who also has this model, the same problems arise there also, and when he came to the USA with the Usa/Canada 'card' it acted the same as my U.S. model...All in all not a good showing and not what I expected.

Please, please fix the PC interface software! Very difficult to use on the PC. Why isn't "SET A DESTINATION" a most obvious box to click on? In fact, it's not there at all. That's why you buy this in the 1st place, to SET A DESTINATION and get there. Of course BUYING FROM THE STORE is quite obvious. I'd love to re-design the user interface completely....it's frustrating. The device does work well, but that PC interface is a horror.

It's a nice device but I can not recommend it to anyone who has to get from A to B under time constraints. It does what it's supposed to do: get you the shortest or fastest way but it does so in accordance with algorithms, not common sense.
Biggest screw ups so far: 4 block detour on a normally straight 11 miles drive; two directions through a high security complex (which was obviously impossible); sent down a one-way street; 15 minutes to pick up position on Interstate while connected to 7 satellites.
It's a good system to use with nice features but I was frustrated by the performance. Looking forward to upgrading to a more expensive model or a Navigon. Chose this because of the good software interface. Very accessible.

1st GPS for me. Worked great right out the box when I bought it in late Sept. By mid-Nov I was ready to register on-line and hooked it to my computer. TomTom froze. Two calls to tech support and left messages. No call back. Third call, three days later and a call-back. They said the system HD was fried and must return and it'd be repaired in 14 work days (nearly a month in real time). I asked for an immediate replacement and they said, "it's not our policy but Amazon might help." Amazon's not so keen on replacements after 30 days. Now I wait.
br /
br /Good news - if you're looking for something easy, out of the box, quick set up and good value, TTOne is it. But look around (off-line too) as the price is dropping quickly. If you don't need Blue-tooth, up-to the minute rerouting or traffic problems and just need to find your way from Point A to B, TTOne is it. It does get a little snippy with you (turn around at the next intersection) if you go off the recommended path but quickly adjusts. And in a metro area (NYC or D.C.) it may send you the wrong way on a one-way street SO be responsible for your actions - TomTom does make it easy to forget where you're going by just listening to the nice voice and following instructions (sometimes, but only about 2% incorrect). Good value, I'd buy it again and it's small and you can fit it in your purse or jacket pocket.

Bought the TomTom One to replace a Garmin that was a little to big for the new car.The TomTom had the level of portability with a legible 3-1/2" screen I was looking for. The unit is small enough (thin enough) to fit into a jacket pocket, Easy to store and carry in your hand if walking.
The TomTom does gets you where you need to go when you don't have local knowledge, and that's what you buy GPS for.
For around $300, this product is a no brainier. it performs it duties extremely well. The software is user friendly, and the unit is ready right out of the box. Save yourself and step and do not forget to register prior to putting in your car and turning it on. Being used to my old Garmin(2620) I do wish the TomTom had more POI's and a better interface to search for specifics. i.e Narrow down the food search by category. Other then that this is a great little unit and my Kids love the downloadable MICKEY from the UK voice. "Well done you have reached your destination, Well done"

I recently purchased the TomTom One based on user reviews stating that this unit was easy to use, right out of the box. As it was meant to be a gift for my directionally challenged hubby, this feature was most important to me. As promised, there was really no assembly required and we put it in the car last Saturday morning for a test run. Imagine our suprise when the touchscreen announced that we needed to retrieve an online activation code. It really wasn't difficult to do, but it did require going back into the house, and upstairs to the pc in order to retrieve our code. Perhaps the instructions should have indicated that this would be necessary. Other than that, the unit delivered as promised. I agree with the other reviewers that it might be nice to have street names announced. Then again, we live in New England and many streets don't have signs posted so it really doesn't matter.

PROS - Fairly easy to use, very compact. Saved me several times driving in unfamiliar areas - much better than a stressful interchange between girlfriend/navigator stressed driving/boyfriend.
br /
br /CONS - Short battery life 2 hours(unless you plug it into your car), sometimes it can take a while for the device to read the satilites. I think it needs at least three of the nine sats. up there. In cities, sometimes hight buildings can interrupt the signal, but typically during first turning on the device.
br /
br /OVERALL - Good gadget if you do a lot of driving alone in areas unfamiliar to you. Well worth the investment. Best to program your destination before you start driving as the touch screen entering can be a little tedious DURING a drive.

I have found the Tom Tom very useful when traveling locally and across states. It seems very up to date with the roads and various routes. The only down side is that sometimes in very built up areas, i.e major cities there is a slight delay finding a GPS signal due to the buildings. But apart from that I have had no problems with this item and have found it to be a great help when traveling.

Great product. It took less than 5 minutes to get used to the user interface and knowing where/how to get around. Then I was off and running never to get lost again. The on-board maps have been surprisingly up-to-date so far. I've had mine for two months.

Got this for my wife. She loves it. I know the feeling from my tomtom go 700. It is wonderful to feel you are not going to get lost. Works like a charm and clear as a bell. Updating is easy I nor my wife have any complaints except that we both wish we had it earlier.

Without question the TomTom ONE is a brilliant device for the price. While some require (or just want) the GO 720 or GO 920T, the reality is that the ONE provides the same great directions at less than half the price (note that the ONE 3rd Edition is $50 more expensive and you get the newer maps + a more advanced NavCore 7 system).
The best part? TomTom devices are extremely easy to use, even for folks that aren't technical. You never (or nearly never) even need to plug it into anything (i.e. a computer) for any reason other than to charge it.

I've owned a Magellan, the Tom Tom is so much better. It's very small in size, yet the screen size is big. It's got a battery. The cord is long enough. The included software is great. The maps are perfect. The best part is the way you input information. There is no guessing or fumbling, just type it in and it routes it, very easy to use. Very fast operation on both input and locking onto a signal. The price is just right. The only thing I would complain about is the suction cup and arm are kind of short, but since they are giving tickets for windshield mounts on some states, you need to get a dash or air duct mounting device, so this is no longer a choice or an issue. I recommend this product to anyone looking for a good GPS. It's perfect.

love this item, but the attachment for the window is useless, you cannot put it on the new vehicles because of the slant of the windows. need to improve on it...also needs a longer extension rather than having to buy the extra extension that is offered. I put the item in my cup holder and shut the draw and it stays there rather than putting it on the window

For 6 months I poured over all of the gps units available out there...garmin, magellan, navigon, etc. and ultimately decided to go with the TomTom as it seemed to have both the good price and the high quality of product I was searching for. I'm a frequent traveler for work and for pleasure and I thought this device would be a handy tool for navigating and finding nearby restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc.
br /
br /I just bought the TomTom about 2 weeks ago and was able to figure out how to use it straight out of the box. It has been a very easy to use and surprisingly has more features than I originally anticipated. One feature I've especially liked are the itinerary planning. If I am going to say my hotel and then to a restaurant and then to a bar I can set all of those 3 points as an itinerary and it will navigate me to each one in that order without having to enter in each destination as I need to go to them.
br /
br /I've used it in large cities and in rural areas with excellent results. Occasionally it will give you a roundabout way to get somewhere, but you'll certainly get there.
br /
br /Overall, for the price this unit simply cannot be beat.

TomTom One vs Garmin Nuvii

I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvii 350, used it for a couple of months, hated it, sold it, and bought a TomTom One. For me, the TomTom unit is much better. It's going to be a long time before any of these units will route the user as well as a person familiar with the area, but all in all, I've very happy with the TomTom One.
br / The TomTom activates in 10 seconds, the Garmin takes three times as long and insists every time that you agree to their disclaimer. The TomTom unit has a better designed screen, making the vital information (what direction is the next turn and how far) easily readable even with glare on the screen. It is much easier to understand because the text to voice function is clearer and because its volume varies with road speed. You'd think that the Garmin would be better because it tells you the street name for the next turn, but half the time you can't understand it, and because the screen is so poor you can't read it either.
br / The TomTom allows use of a QUERTY layout for entering information which is much more natural for anyone using a keyboard every day. It has a big suction cup that sticks to the window fairly well. It allows for itinerary planning. The Garmin has none of these features.
br / Both units allow for navigating to a specific latitude/longitude location. Both allow traveling via an alternate route or location. Both units are pretty good, but not great at route planning.
br / The Garmin has an MP3 player. That would be a great thing, but in a suddenly stressful driving situation, it cannot be turned off easily. For me this makes it useless.

I did not expect this product to be as good as it is. I had been pricing the top end models and became frustrated because both the top Garmin and the top Tom Tom models were pre-order only and not yet available. I was going to do quite a bit of driving over the holidays, so decided to buy a cheaper version to see if it was a toy or the real deal. It is the real deal. At first I was upset that it did not recognize my zip code or the names of even the largest cities in my state, but I got on my computer and used my Streets and Trips and determined the longitude and latitude of all my locations and low and behold! The directions were perfect. I expected more errors on maps that the unit couldn't find initially, but I only found one and it was a very confusing intersection to start with, but since the hospital I was going to was insight, it was easy to see which way was correct. I am exceptionally pleased with my purchase.

I just purchased the TomTom One portable GPS system. I have a very good internal sense of direction and I can read a map just fine but in New Jersey traffic, who can be bothered with that? I hate getting lost on busy roads and I often take long road trips to other states. This is a great device because it will talk you through your route, when to turn, it shows the names of the roads, etc. Another feature I love for road trips is when you get tired and need to stop you can push a button and the TomTom will show landmarks of all the local hotels and gas stations along your route (like if you only want a Marriott hotel it will tell you where the nearest Marriott is and how to get there). It will also show you local attractions and places of interest if you choose. If you are stuck in traffic and want to get off the road you're on you can hit "alternate route" and it will tell you where to go at your next turn off to get to your destination. I use it all the time, even at home. The funny thing is that we just built our home last year and because the development is so new it does not pick up on the GPS so when I turn down my road it just shows me driving into a dirt field! LOL. Other than that it is my most favorite new electronic device.

TomTom One is an OLD model. In Europe and elsewhere the TomTom One has been replaced with the TomTom One NE or New Edition. It is lighter, thinner, and all evaluations in Europe agree: it is better!
There are two TomTom One NEs in Europe: "TomTom One Regional" (with a SD card of the country of choice, e.g., the UK) and "TomTom One Europe" (with a SD card of Europe). The latter is more expensive than the former.
Wait! The new TomTom One will appear in the USA eventually. March '07? April? May?

We bought this device about a year ago in North Carolina where it had a so-so performance. We started to notice some software problems, but nothing too severe at the time. Then, later that year, we moved to the Bay area and that's when the device really started failing.
br /
br /Apparently TomTom thought a solid software design involves rebooting the device when it loses GPS. As soon as we hit an overpass, the device goes blank and it takes an exotic combination of pressing the start button, removing the power cable and re-inserting the memory card a couple of times to get it to work again.... until the next overpass. The couple of times it does manage to reboot by itself, it quietly reverts back to a random previously entered destination, causing us to suddenly get detoured and ending up driving in the completely wrong direction.
br /
br /We have updated the software multiple times, but it does not seem to make a difference. Somehow it works better in Arizona and North Carolina, but performance in California is abysmal.
br /
br /The maps are ok, if a bit outdated. The directions can be outright confusing, but once you understand what the voice *really* means and you start to selectively ignore what she says, you can get to your destination fairly easily.
br /
br /I have read the stories about the terrible customer service, so we're not even going to bother trying to get our $200 back or getting the device repaired. We're switching to Garmin soon and this one will end up in the trash where it belongs.

My 1st experience with gps took me to the Twin Cities to look at a used Jeep. I looked at the road atlas before I left my house in central Wisconsin and got an overall sense of which roads to take when I got into the Cities. I fully intended on bringing my atlas, but I forgot it. Oh well, I borrowed my dad's Tom Tom One. I knew how to get to the Twin Cities without a map anyway, and the TomTom had the address programed into it.
br /
br /TomTom got to the Twin cities flawlessly! I could have done that myself though. The problem was that the interchange for interstate/bypasses was being re-constructed in the city limits. The actual turn was opposite of what TomTom had in its maps. Things change, thats fine, it would not have been a problem had TomTom said "exit left I-490 North" instead of "exit left 500 yards" . It got me kind of lost, had I not looked at a map before leaving I would have been completely lost!! I ended up going with what I partially remembered from the atlas.
br /
br /I have since tried other gps units (Magellan Crossover) and found it far superior because it tells you the proper name of the street you are turning onto. Oh and the Canada map on the Crossover is much more complete. The road to my dads cabin is on does not exist accorind to TomTom. It may be better than nothing... sometimes.
br /
br /My dad has about the same opinion of the TomTom, in fact we borrowed it 4 months ago and he has not asked for it back! I purchased a Garmin gpsmaps 60csx after reading reviews here on Amazon.
br /I liked the Magellan Crossover too when I used it, it was a hard purchasing decision.

This GPS is a decent starter GPS for people who are not tech savy. Its a little fussy to set up initially and the home software has some quirks but as far as plotting a route for you and talking you the whole way there, it works as designed.
It has a built in battery and is small enough you can take it and put it in your pocket. The audio is loud enough. You could use the suction cup to scale the side of a building. The zoom in-zoom out feature is aggrivating because it won't STAY where you zoom in or out to. It always defaults back to the close in position. This is frustrating because it shows you just what your eyes are already seeing, except with street names. For those of you who like to know where you are in the big picture scheme of things, do not buy the GPS because it will drive you crazy. ME personnaly, I know where I'm going and just wanted one to show me where I AM. This one doesn't quite cut it and will probably end up as a Christmas present for the inlaws.
I'm confused as to liking it or not.

I like the way it looks, sounds, and all the options, but I HATE the fact that if you tell it to take you to an address and you after telling it that change your mind, it doesn't have a cancel button. If you go to a different address that you don't need the GPS cause you know how to get there, it keeps trying to take you to the one you changed your mind about. I looked everywhere to find a cancel button, and it does not have one. Also hate that www.tomtom.com does not work. Try going there and good luck.

i bought this for my grandmother, who can't find her way to her next door neighbor's house. it works very well if you know the address; it's easy to use, it reroutes if you miss a turn, etc. my one (big) gripe with this unit is the terrible point of interest database. major stores (lowes, home depot, bealls dept store, etc) were not in the database--while i might expect some local restaurants, etc, to be missing, you'd think big boxes would at least be in there. it's possible to download some of them if you search for them individually on the tomtom database, but this is a real pain for me, never mind my 82 year old gm. it would be nice to d/l all of the poi's at once, but this doesn't seem possible. other than that it works very well though. i'm not sure if other brands have better databases. the object was for my grandmother to be able to plug in "walmart", and have it direct her there. while it wouldn't be a big deal for me to go to google maps and get an address, this is too big of an extra step for some people.

I love this TomTom One. It's my first GPS system, but I have no regrets buying it. It's very small and, therefore, very portable. You can easily store it anywhere in the car and out of site. It's accuracy and ease of use make it a pleasure to travel into far and unknown places. It mounts securely and easily onto the windshield. My only suggestion to the maker of TomTom One would be to have the GPS tell the driver verbally what street you are turning on or what highway you are entering. Instead, it shows the next major road you will be entering in a rather small text. Otherwise, it's an excellent GPS for most people. And the price is unbeatable.

I live down South so here in SC the roads don't change much and so the TomTom seems much more accurate to us hicks than you sissyfied city folk. Ok I'm only kidding but the TomTom seems very accurate to me. I only use it on long trips (100 or more miles) and if I have to go somewhere downtown and I'm not familiar where the place is. I've learned to pretty much trust the TomTom but it always seems to falter at the last couple of buildings. But, it does get you where you want to go. The TomTom loves the interstate so it always guides you there even if you know a shorter route from experience. I gave it four stars because it works well for what you pay. I've had mine about 6 months.

My brother and I decided to get this for my mom (SueSue) for Christmas because last year I got a TomTom Go 300 due to chronically getting lost in a new city. We were SO impressed with that TomTom that we got this newer, smaller technology. It is EVEN better than mine. It acquired satellite RIGHT out of the box and was accurate in calculating routes. Seriously, TomTom is comparable to the $2500 system in my boyfriend's Accura. Seriously! My mom loves us SO much now that she cannot get lost anymore. :)

I'm a road warrior. I make my living on the street. The Tom-Tom replaces crates of Thomas Brothers maps for me.
When I travel Tom-Tom goes with me to the city (cities) I'm flying in to. I wish the suction cup mount was easy to dis-assemble as its a little clumsy to pack.
I use it all the time even when going places I know how to get to. Its ETA is invaluable when giving a heads up to someone I need to meet as to when I'll actually arrive.
With it untethered the internal battery makes it pocketable for walking in a city and trying to find local eating and shopping establishments.

TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator
We bought the TomTom One on the first day of our 3 week holiday and it arrived on Day three! What a gem - just plugged it in and off we went. If we needed a tourist site, hotel, gas station or a restuarant - 2 clicks and we were driving like locals! TomTom is unbelievable in county lanes and stunningly powerful for geting around the urban jungle - but it has a great finale when you leave the car. You can roam around parks and city streets and it tells you where you are and gets you back to the car directly and safely. A truly indispensable travel tool - if you leave home without one, dont worry - just call Amazon!

I'm sold! We love to try out new routes around the busy traffic in Atlanta. I love being able to have an ETA. It's a fabulous product and a great price. My husband downloaded John Cleese's voice for the TomTom. It's so much more fun to hear him give directions than the factory voice.

First of all the quality of the TomTom One is excellent. Clearity and accurracy of directions is excellent and map quality is above average. I would have rated this product a 5 star item, except for the difficulties I have encountered with misleading literature and TomTom customer service. I purchased this same exact unit in September 2006 from BestBuy, so hopefully it will be different than the Amazon experience. Included within the packaging of the TomTom unit was a flyer indicating a free 2006 map update. According to the promotional flyer, all that was necessary in order to claim the update was to visit a TomTom corporate website no later than October 30, 2006. When I attempted to receive the free map update the day I purchased the GPS unit, I came to find out that the map update was not yet available. On October 15th, I attempted again, with the same results. Again I tried on the 30th, still no update. On the 30th of October I contacted TomTom and was informed the update was not even available....why they would advertise this with an expiration date prior to the products release is beyond me. I gave it another two months, and contacted TomTOm in December (two months after the promotions expiration date) and the release was still not available. I have since filed a complaint with the BBB and the only reply from TomTom is to offer me a free map update...although it is not available yet!!!!!!!!! It is now pushing February, pushing six months later and I have still yet to receive any promissed map update. Although the unit is nice, due to the lack of service from TomTom and the misrepresentation with the promotional literature, I will never own another product from this company.
AVOID the TOM TOM ONE 3rd Edition

Got my first GPS for Christmas... and the TOM TOM 1 3rd Edition is a VERY poor unit. Their choice of TeleAtlas mapping is very weak (doesn't even show many of the streets and a major 35 year old mall here in Bangor, Maine. Even after buying the $50 regional map for the northest...no improvement. Add to this the frequent 'White Screen of Death' (I read of this in chatgroups, but didn't listen).... no contest: Trade it in for Garmin. The Garmin 350 took me right to my doorstep, with instant recalculations when I intentionally took a wrong turn. The Garmin 260 might be a less costly substitute, but either way..... avoid the TOM TOM. If Santa had used TOMTOM this Christmas, he'd still be blindly circling the North Pole.

The Tom Tom One has been exactly what I had figured it would be and that is very operational and helpful, especially for the price I received my Tom Tom One.
It fit right into my car (Yukon) nicely and is not a hazard or distraction and has a daytime and night time lighting that is beneficial. The Tom Tom is loud at the highest setting and easy to follow.
I am still learning all of the options and learning the options is easy. The unit was easy to start out of the box and the instructions are easy to follow.
I am still learneing how to keep it zoomed out to the level that I want it at while driving, but that is the only thing I have not been able to manipulate easy, but I am sure I will get it soon.
I would recommend the Tom Tom One to anyone who is looking for a basic navigational system. Its small but the screen is easy to see while driving and the voice over allows you to never look at the unit while in traffic but still prepares you for upcoming turns and merges, etc...
The Tom Tom one is portable and can be taken from the car and placed in your front pocket of any average collered shirt. It says it has 2-3 hours of life once taken from the charger, but I have found my unit has more life than that, so in case you need to take a boat ride on the lake, you can take it with you and navigate your general areas on the lake in a boat as well.
I like my Tom Tom one and am very pleased at the price I had to pay to get it as well.

I've been using my TomTom One for about 2 months, and now I'm totally spoiled. I use it all the time, even when I know exactly where I'm going. It's easy to navigate and easy to program and store information. The only gripe I have is that there's a certain way to find points of interest by name, and every time I run across it it's totally by accident and I can never remember how to get back to that feature. Maybe I just need more practice. Anyway, I'm extremely impressed with the TomTom One, especially for it being my very first NAV system.

I have used many different car navigation systems and most are difficult to program. The systems I have used are the BMW, Lexus, and Cadillac systems. These are so difficult to use that its seldom worth it to go through the hassle to program them. The TOM TOM One is super simple to program. I managed to quickly set up the unit and learn to program routes in it without reading the manual at all.
But don't think the Tom Tom is so simple that it lacks many features and options. I have found the Tom Tom to be a very full featured GPS unit and I believe that it has the capabilities of almost any model on the market. However, due to the ease of use, you'll actually be able to employ these features. Tom Tom has made the GPS system easy enough for everyone to use.

At work, we use a Garmin, however, I wanted to give Tom Tom a try and found it to be really not to the standard of the Garmin. In addition, my friend has the Nuvi 350 and we took it on a trip and it was easy to use, good graphics, text to speech is good, just an overall good product. This goes for the Garmin that we have at work.
The Tom Tom One that I purchased was really subpar. There is no text to speech with street names. The Tom Tom says, "In 300 yards, take the next right." Also, the Tom Tom said their were resturants and hotels at an intersection and there were none to be found. Also, my Tom Tom dropped from my windshield when I was taking a turn. And last, the graphics are not very good. It does not even have my address on the map.
I would not recommend the Tom Tom... Spend the extra and get the Garmin Nuvi. Oh, the Tom Tom computer downloads were extremely difficult to work.
Hopes this helps,
JR

Overall, it has been super helpful in my life-- saving me tons of hassle and time. If you wanted the GPS with all the good basic features, this is the one.

If you want a good product stay away from Tom Tom products. I have used 3 different products from tom tom and maybe I'm a slow learner or tom tom has bad products, just stay away from tom tom so many better gps units to buy that are better. Not worth the money, bought a download and it turned out to be the wrong one and they will not fix the problem or give a refund. STAY AWAY FROM TOM TOM

Yeah the tomtom is good for what it does, maybe being in a big city results in better maps or something, but its quite accurate, although it loves to take you on the freeway, which is unnecessary sometimes, but it can find alternate routes fast enough... The best thing about it however, is the downloadable celebrity voice of John Cleese, yes thats right, John Cleese... it makes travel so much more enjoyable. Get it for the maps and not getting lost-ness but love it for the JohnJohn.

I fell in love with the GPS after renting a car that used Tom Tom. I'm absolutely in love with my Tom Tom and use it everywhere I go. Even if it's only a few miles down the road. I'm dissappointed that Tom Tom One doesn't say the name of the streets, but I can get over that. I guess the rental car Tom Tom was a different model than the one I purchased. Another disappointment was finding the same Tom Tom One on sale at an electronics store for $50 less a month after my purchase. But again, I'm still happier than anticipated and know I'll never be lost again, literally. I also am impressed with how fast Tom TOm can recalculate detours.

We love the TomTom. It is very simple to use. We particularly like the patient voice which very seldom becomes irritated with our poor tech skills. Only complaint was the voice can become muted without our knowledge, and we passed our tournoff point. We read the directions and it told us how to turn voice back on, and we were directed to turn around and back we went to our destination.
We loaned the unit to a out-of-town relative, who said he would never hhave gotten to the train station using a standard map. TomTom took him right to the door.

I love this little "back seat driver", for once I don't have to second guess or wonder if it really knows where it is going. My husband (a police officer) sometimes takes it with him to work, he got into a chase and was able to call out his location at every turn. Which is normally done by memory or drive fast and hope to see street names at the same time. Now he thinks it should be standard equipment for all cruiser.

Just got my hands on a TomTom ONE last night and I can't tell you how excited I was to actually try it out. I'd heard really great things about it through reviews, friends' recommendations, etc. but had never used it myself. I was so glad to finally have one in my possession, and even happier that it was ready to go, right out of the box, something that I (someone who's not completely technically savvy) really appreciated. The size is perfect - the screen is definitely big enough, but the device is completely portable so I can take it from car to car and small enough that I can fit it in a purse or pocket. I'm excited to use it more but absolutely thrilled with what I've seen so far.

i bought the gps for my 2 wk vacation to orlando, i recived it as promised by amazon with no charge of delivery.
this tomtom gps was the difference of having a great vacation a not a horrible one, i saved time, fights with my wife of which directions to take, reroute in a second and is very accurate, never let me down.
this 200 usd investment also saved me arround 15,000 usd....yes 15,000 usd, one day coming back from a park we decided to stop ina kentucky fried chicken in the way back the hotel, we ate and leave the restaurant, 5 minutes away from the hotel my wife told me that she forgot her purse in the restaurant, of course i tried to confort her, until she told me that her credit card with 15,000 fifteen thousand dollars credit limit, with out used a penny yet, was in the purse....i really freaked out big time, imagine u stop in a restaurant you dont know where the restaurant was, how long can u take to ask, and try to find the same restaurant almost at 10 pm.
well as i went to the kfc by the reference of the gps on the points of interest that are coming in the tomtom one, i just click back to priors trips, and i went back in less than 20 minutes to kfc with out having a clue where the restaurant was......awossooooommmmmmmmmeeeeeeee!!!!!!!
whe got the purse back and my 200 usd investment became in to a saving of 15000 dollars, thanks to this beatiful gps.
and it really works out of the box, the only recomendetion is to call first where u want to go to find the adress, tom tom will do the rest for you..............is great!!!!!!!!!

My wife has always had difficulty with knowing which way she's facing when coming out of a store or office. No, its not a 'girl' vs 'guy' thing...she just has trouble orienting herself. When she saw a friend with a TOM-TOM One she thought it was the greatest thing going. And when she's driving she has the same orientation difficulties. She received her Tom-Tom for Xmas and used it successfully within 2 days. It was easy to set up, easy and fun to use. And now she won't let me play with it. 'Nuff said?

Sure, the customer support(Business hours only) is weak, documentation is poor, and the One sometimes takes several tries to start. I could live with that. But the one I received as a Christmas gift just stopped working, a month later. It won't progress past the startup screen even after being reset, and I'm taking a trip tomorrow. Thanks, TomTom. If I can get hold of the receipt, I'll be exchanging it for a Garmin.

I bought TomTom one which looked fabulous. But I got real bad experience with it. Showing wrong destination time and not able to connect to phone by bluetooth. Tried couple phones none of them able to connect to the GPS. And more over typical driving direction, which took me 2 & a 1/2 hours travelling time where it should supposed to be 1 & a 1/2 hour. So I strongly suggest to check one more time before you go for it.

I am a professional driver. I have compared many GPS systems. Tom Tom I rate the lowest! Comparing Tom Tom vs Garmin. Out of 4 different navagation systems I rate Tom Tom a Zero. This system is not as user friendly and is NOT as dependable. Garmin IS user friendly, easy to operate while driving (even though your not suppose to) and very accurate! You cannot beat Garmin in my opinion. I would buy Garmin before any other navagation system. GO GARMIN!
