First of all let it be known that I read ALL of the reviews before writing this one of my own. I found one thing to be the common factor in each review. If you run the firmware update this GPS comes to life and will make you happy. The TomTom Home software makes this as easy as connecting it to your computer and runnng the program. The software does the rest! Remember, it's new and many changes will come along to improve the functionality as TomTom analyzes the product and gets feedback from it's users. Don't be afraid to contact them to offer your input!

Next, the scores given for this GPS have been greatly reduced by customers who are unhappy with the companies they purchased it from, not in the quality and performance of the 910. Others are complaining about other TomTom GPS units and NOT the 910. If you are complaining that you paid too much then hear this---I PAID $1400.00 for the Magellan 700 when it came out two + years ago and although a good GPS, it's now dead and had been locking up constantly for the past 6 months. Try getting a hold of Magellan support in Canada and you'll find out how much the Canadians "like" Americans!! I have tossed the Magellan in lieu of the cost and frustration involved in repairing it. Additionally, the out of box mount was useless and $50.00 later for a windshield mount was little improvement!

Pay attention to the alignment of the suction base when you mount the 910 on the windshield and turn th lock until it clicks (just like it says in the book!) and it will stay tight. Oh ya, how many other units come with the home charger, docking station with a USB cord, a car charger and a remote control for the money you just paid? Let me help you answer that: NONE!!!

The hands free phone (Bluetooth) is great, the remote speeds up the navigation screens and if you take the time to customize the screen with all the toys they include it becomes a cockpit of information!

OK, so the moral of this review is rate the finished product, not your lousy experience with your vendor or shipping problems or your inability to follow simple instructions from the manual. Thsi GPS deserves 5 stars and nothing less.

Top Notch GPS!!

I usually do not write any reviews but I felt like I had to give my two cents about this product. The GO 910 has everything I need and want in a portable GPS. The out of the box experience was easy, the navigation top-rate, the re-calculation time when I missed my exit was quick, and, best of all, I could come home and dock the unit to my PC to download my address book. It even updates the software in the background as I work. Absolutely FREE - no fees!

I noticed most people mentioned their experiences with the product while driving. I want to mention that this product has a built-in battery that allows me to walk around and find local restaurants, banks, or whatever, in any town or city I'm in. (I'm an airline pilot and I don't like to get lost!) One of the route choices I can make is 'fastest', 'shortest', 'avoid highways', etc. This is great because I have found new ways to get to places where I have followed the exact same route for years without realizing that there were quicker ways to get to my destination.

Another cool thing about this product is that your experience doesn't end with the navigation. I easily docked the unit and downloaded pictures of my family, a few of my favorite tunes, and also downloaded some funny voices off of their website. I now have John Cleese telling me how to get from point A to point B! Gotta love it!

I have used other GPS devices in the past and, I have to say, this is the most accurate, most versatile, and user friendly device I have ever come across. For the price, no other GPS even comes close.

First, the good news: the TomTom Go 910 is a pretty good GPS unit. It will get you where you want to go, the point-of-interest (POI) database seems quite thorough, and having maps that cover both North America and most of western Europe is great for travelers.

However, the basic GPS features are marred by an incredible number of design flaws that make the unit basically unusable, especially if you sprang for some of the other features like playing MP3s or making handsfree phone calls.

- Unbelievably, the joint on the windshield mounting bracket is not sturdy enough to support the weight of the GPS unit. So unless all the roads in your area are as smooth as glass, the GPS will slowly droop until it's nearly face-down, requiring you to prop it up every 10 or 20 minutes.

- Depending on which road you're on, the unit might announce "in 0.3 miles, stay left on Interstate 80 westbound, and stay in the left lane" at every $*@#&! exit on the freeway. There is no apparent way to get it to shut up without disabling all sound, including music. Or it might not make a peep for a hundred miles, while you pass through major interchanges wondering if you are supposed to keep going. None of the navigation settings seemed to change this behavior.

- The options menu suffers from Bill Gates syndrome. By default it shows only a small selection of options, which inevitably lacks the one you want. But when you enable "advanced" options, you end up slogging through 4 or 5 pages of settings every time. TomTom makes us choose between too few options and too many options; why can't they do their homework and provide just the right number?

- The on-screen buttons are too small or too sensitive to deal with a finger poking them while the car is in motion and the GPS is jouncing around. The only way to maintain accuracy is to steady the GPS with your thumb and pinkie while firmly pressing the screen with your forefinger. Otherwise you'll end up dialing the wrong phone number, selecting the wrong POI, and pressing fast-forward instead of pause every time.

- Playing MP3 audiobooks is impossible. Well, you can play them, but once you start playing you'd better not stop, because the player does not support bookmarks and your hair will go gray while you scan through an hour-long track one minute at a time. And if you accidentally release the fast-forward button a millisecond too soon, the player jumps to the next track, and all your hard work is for naught.

- Compared with the Garmin nuvi 660, the TomTom's screen is dim and hard to read in bright daylight, especially if you wear sunglasses while driving.

So if you're looking for just a decent GPS, I'd recommend one of the Garmin nuvi models. (The Garmin nuvi 660 is a highly usable GPS, but suffers from its own problems with MP3 playing and handsfree phone calls.)

And if you're relying on reviews to decide which GPS to buy, take the raving positive ones with a grain of salt: the reviewer may not have even tried out the features most important to you.

I do like the product, but there are a number of problems that need to be addressed by Tomtom - other products may be better (but I wouldn't know):
1. I'm a Mac user. Everytime I try to use the Tomtom Home application with the unit "synced," when I "eject" the unit from the desktop, it crashes/freezes, requiring a hard-reset. That means I need to use a paperclip to poke the very hidden reset button underneath the unit - something I only found after searching the internet a lot, since it isn't in the original documentation.
2. I live in a large city, and the "acquisition time" for the GPS satellite is abysmal. When I had a factory installed unit in my old car, it worked quickly (under a minute). With this unit, I leave my garage and can be out of the borough before the unit connects, which is only ok if I already know which direction to start off driving.
3. The voices: street names will only be read aloud by the "computer generated" voices, not the voice-actor voices, and the vast majority of the voices are voice actors. That's not really a big deal, but the most annoying part is: for some reason one of the computer voices recognizes the abbreviation Br as "branch." It's quite annoying when the object of interest is really a bridge, like, say, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, the George Washington Bridge the Third Avenue Bridge, the Willis Avenue Bridge, the Triborough Bridge... I don't know I've ever enountered a branch while driving.
I'd like to say I love it, and as a previous reviewer said, I wanted to love it, but it just doesn't merit that kind of adolation. There are a few good features, like the route preview, which allows you to see the route in a number of different ways (map, words, 3-d drive simulator, etc.), but you have to have a working GPS signal to use it. It allows you to select a single road, for example, to avoid. It will also allow you to recalculate for roadblocks, etc. And, you can put in multiple stops apparently, but I have yet to figure this part out. As I said, the documentation is almost completely useless.
Frankly, the Tomtom people should be less interested in jamming in additional features, like the mp3 player and bluetooth device, and spend more time working on the problems with the core product.

I like TomTom GO 910, Yet every review I read raved about Garmin Nuvi 660. People wrote that Garmin has better maps, their cup suction holder does not break, like TomTom's. Garmin does not reset when the car runs over a bump. And so on.

There is one detail overlooked. The Nuvi 660 costs $800 to $900 including tax and/or shipping on December 10. The TomTom GO510 costs about half after the rebate from TomTom. The screen image is stunning. The software is clever. The features are the same as Nuvi 660, even better.

Before buying, I called TomTom's customer service. They told me the suction cup holder has been redesigned in September and it does not break. I live in Rocklin , California, in a new area which just cropped up last week on google and yahoo maps, TomTom support said the updated maps will be available before the end of he week, that means in three week time from today.

The 910 has a charger/holder linked to my home computer and Internet. I can update it weekly with the latest position of the satellite, a free service from TomTom and the unit detects the signal very fast..

The unit also has a remote control. I smiled when I saw it. Yet, in my Cadillac SRX, the windshield is inclined and getting to the GPS unit can be cumbersome when driving, The remote control solves elegantly the problem.

Good, but not the best

I purchased the TomTom Go 910 based on recommendations from magazine reviews and comments by existing users. One of the important features for me is Mac OS X support, and supposedly TomTom is better than Garmin and Magellan. If they're the best, then I'd hate to see how Garmin and Magellan support Mac OS X.

br /Any Satellite Navigation product has two main components: the SatNav device itself and the software you install on your computer. The software (called TomTom Home) is used to backup the device, customize it, and download updates. You can also use it to put photos and MP3s on the device.
br /The TomTom Home software can also show on your computer the same screens/features/menus that the TomTom Device has. Well, the Windows version does this but the Mac version doesn't. And it has been this way for a very long time according to users of several TomTom forums I've discovered on the web. This is a major point, because you use this device emulation feature to plan out complex trips and ultimately download the itinerary into the TomTom device. Without this feature you have to plan out your trips on the device, which is awkward when you have multiple stops on a multi-day trip.
br /
br /The biggest problem with the TomTom device is that its routing software is flawed. My first major trip was a 500-mile, 10-hour voyage to pick up my daughter from skating camp. Another parent made the trip as well, and he used a Garmin Nuvi. We left our area about the same time, but he arrived 90 minutes before me. We compared routes and discovered some major differences in routing. It turns out that I could have staying on a major highway for 80% of the trip, which is what the Garmin did. The TomTom however had me leave the highway and take local roads and then rejoin the highway later on. And yes, I did have it set to select the fastest route. After doing some internet research I discovered that this is a common TomTom issue. One review compared three different types of trips (local, medium, and long distance) on the Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom. In all cases TomTom's routes were longer than the other two. Until TomTom revises its routing engine, I do not recommend buying one.
br /
br /On the positive side, the user interface of the TomTom is reportedly better than Garmin and Magellan. I don't know this from experience, I'm just parrotting what I've read in multiple reviews. The navigation screen is easier to understand (an important item when navigating in new territory), the menus are better, and so on. I must say I've been happy with the UI on it.
br /
br /Another major feature of a SatNav is its list of "POIs", or Points of Interest. You don't need to know the exact address of the amusement park or airport you're going to, you just need to know the state, city, and name of the POI. The database knows the location of thousands of points of interest including gas stations, restaurants, hotels, and so on. You can set the trip display to show these POIs as you drive. Imagine seeing the display of the road ahead and by the upcoming exit you see icons for gas and food. Helpful, but it ends there. You can't tap the icons to find out the name of the restaurant or the type of gas. You can exit the Trip view and run through the menus to find the nearest gas station, but the routing engine doesn't limit its search to upcoming rest stops or nearby exits, it will display stations you've passed, stations miles down local winding roads, and so on.
br /
br /The TomTom can map out routes that avoid tolls if that's what you want. Unfortunately it won't tell you how many tolls are on your route, what they cost and how many minutes you have to drive out of the way to avoid that cost. You can't pick the option of accepting one toll and not another, its an all or nothing choice.
br /
br /The TomTom documentation is sorely lacking. It covers a few of the major features but offers no guidance on the more involved features. There is little explanation of what the on-screen icons mean or how to check that the battery is charging, or to find out its charge state. I'm a technical writer, and if I produced such a skimpy manual for one of our products, I'd be fired. Fortunately there are several forums online that have helpful power users.
br /
br /If you intend to use your SatNav a lot and reducing trip time is a major issue for you, look elsewhere. If you prefer the best UI over the optimium route then the TomTom is a good choice.

I have been a Field Service Engineer for over twelve years. I travel all over the United States as well as Europe. I have used several GPS units and systems over the years including factory built in units as well as PC based systems with the GPS puck. The TomTom 910 is the best unit I have ever used. It is the most accurate system hands down. I have had no issues with this unit at all. After reading some of the posts on here about this unit, I can tell most of them were posted by people who do not have a lot of experience with GPS units. The features are great and the unit is well worth the money. We have about 140 Service Engineers on the road every day and the TomTom units are preferred by far.

I own this unit plus a Magellan 700 updated to a 760 (with the latest maps) I put the two side by side and tested it from Georgia to Michigan. The TomTom maps are Ok, but they took me miles out of my way and did not have streets on it that have been in existence for about 5 years.
I tested it locally in North Georgia, same thing routes took me miles out of my way and they were about 200 yards off at my final destination. The Magellan was spot on to 3 or 4 feet. I really like the 3d view that TomTom has plus the Audio Books that you can download and listen to. But if you cant trust the maps what good are they?
Bottom line is I am selling my TomTom 910 and getting a Magellan 6000T. I know I will take a bath on it but it is worth it in my opinion.

I purchased the TomTom 910 2 weeks ago. I loved that it spoke different languages which would be fun practicing our Italian and Spanish, already had European maps installed without spending more money.

The unit seems too heavy for the mount and started to droop. the connection is by pins and un-snaps too easily and I see a problem with broken pins in the future.

they recommend you not leave it in your car because of theft. but the unit is so large that it didnt even fit in my purse. I had to use a small tote bag to carry it. real pain in the neck.

When the battery died I tried to charge it with the car charger but it did not work or charge the unit at all. then I came home and tried the home wall charger, the green light went on after a bit of wiggling the unit. in the morning when i put it in my car it was completely dead. I tried to charge again at home and again it would not take a charge.

The POI section is time consuming...we were looking for a Thai Restaurant and had to pull the car over because we had to scroll throught all restaurants by alphabetical order instead of by "type of food". finally giving up and typing up the restaurants actual name which took a few more steps spelling the name and city etc. ( I could have looked it up in the yellow pages alot faster since i had to pull the car over anyway)!

I exchanged the unit but have not opened the new one up yet. I am thinking of exchanging it for the Garmin Nuvi 360. Small with great reviews!

Kinks finally ironed out.

It seems like this unit was initially rushed to the market without proper engineering due diligence. Consequently there were many bugs and flaws that are widely documented on the Net (mount, virus, software glitches, electrical connection, RDS antenna, documentation, etc). TomTom appears to have been flooded with complaints and did not communicate all that well and their responses seemed not always sufficient. These points were real deterrants to prospective buyers.

However, to their credit, they kept working and have systematically upgraded the product and solved most issues, even for past customers who unwittingly acted as guinea pig testing agents. Now the recent shipment batches seem to work well straight out of the box and are sufficiently up to date, so that no updates are immediately needed. After extensive internet research, I decided to take the plunge as I needed both Europe and US maps in a cost effective package. My unit has firmware version 6.522 installed with US map 6.65 and Europe map 6.60. This unit was bought in early July from Expo Electronics via Amazon. High volume resellers like these ensure that you get the latest build versions and thus most satisfaction.

This is my first GPS unit and with little experience so far, I can report great signal acquistion on both continents and good GPS routing and recalculations. TomTom says that version 6.75 maps are not essential, so I dont plan to update before at least one more updated map version is available. I dont plan to update the firmware either as I have no need for the FM transmitter and that is all that the update covers. I only downloaded the GPS Quickfix, as I see that some people who have downloaded the firmware update had to do backup, format their hard drives and then reinstall the backup BEFORE redoing the update...no thanks, I dont need all that extra work! One person reported that loading songs and photos crashed their unit.

Finally, I use an intel Mac with OSX 10.4.10 and it is reported that TT Home is not 100% compatible with this setup. I had problem in doing a backup and had to do it manually in the end. Occasionally when ejecting the unit from the computer, it will freeze up, requiring a reset. These software quirks cause me to give only a 4 star rating.

In the end, with the recent price reductions and with most kinks ironed out, this machine is now a quality purchase...no longer a beta version being sold for top dollar. It can be had for a shade more than $400 right here on Amazon, brand new and latest build version. The 910 will give the Garmins and Magellans a real run for the money at lower cost with extra features to boot (including massive storage space). Now all I need is a video player application!!!

TT is ready to launch the radically updated x20 series (720 already available in Europe) with slim, compact designs, voice recognition and user updated Map Share application, so the x10 units are being phased out at ever decreasing prices. Timing for a 910 purchase has never been better. Get one while stocks last...even BestBuy had them for $399 plus tax a week and a half ago.

Update:

I did extensive internet research on this unit before purchase and saw the good, the bad and the ugly. I must have read over 300 pages online.

I can honestly say that the unit has been brought up to scratch. It now has the quality standard it should have had when launched. However, tech moves on and though the feature set is STILL about the best in the business, its bulk makes it seem a bit dated. Nevertheless, if one wants to have a no compromise unit in terms of features, this is still the closest thing to perfection...only things possibly missing are voice recognition, Mapshare, slender size and built in TMC (option only). Oh yeah, it also only comes with TeleAtlas maps...great in Europe, less so in the US where NavteQ apparently rules supreme. Video playback is a cheap optional add on as well with the likes of mobilnova.com.

With the 910 you get 20Gigs of storage space!!!! That is massive in GPS land. Even after loading POIs up the wazoo and cramming in oodles of mp3s, you still will have more than 9 gigs to load on video. Folks, that like 20 movies. Oh, the joy of not having to worry about space for big continental maps and other GPS data.

This thing is a veritable video iPod with full GPS functionality. The charge will hold at least 3 hours doing all the multimedia stuff. Imagine going on a trip on a familiar route, the passengers can idle away the time watching a movie ... for example.

I was able to use Windows and conmpletely manipulate the data structure to what I wanted in terms of POIs, safety cameras and even topo maps. Tons of celebrity voices added. And video content! No probelms with the operations of the machine. Sure it hung up a few times, but was quickly reset. Manual backup was a breeze, thanks to online tips. Just made sure that all files were unhidden.

This is a great toy...oh yeah, its a more than competent GPS unit as well! Probably people who have technophobia should stay away, as this is a high tech unit, it is really is a full linux computer. For them a more basic unit would be better.

This is the best ...

There is no other device which even comes closer. Plus TomTom is now shipping the upgrades to their map for FREE, just pay 6$ in shipping and handling.
Even without the updates, I have found the maps to be quite accurate and at the price that this is available, it beats the Garmin Nuvi 660 anytime. It also has the Europe maps included for free. The Nuvi 660 would run to abt a 1000$ if you need the Europe maps as well.
You are getting this device for half the price and with a 20GB HD, which is missing in the Nuvi.
The Mount is also excellent and I got a spare one from Amazon for the Rental Cars that I use during weekdays.
I cannot be more satisfied with my purchase.
Way to go Tom Tom ....

I received this unit as a Christmas gift. My first thought was "Oh! A GPS device! How cool!." My second was, "Uh-oh - it's a TomTom."

I considered for a moment returning it in exchange for a much-hearlded Garmin but read more about the TomTom 910 and decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. It's absolutely feature-packed! The navigation is reliable and really easy to use. The Bluetooth feature, while cool, isn't really that exciting (there are other ways to accomplish hands-free calling). But that doesn't take away from how much I love this unit.

I've read comments on the mounting device - they must have made improvements here because mine is just dandy. It knows every road in my city (even new roads and one in my neighborhood that recently changed names).

I love the remote control. I don't have to fuss with trying to reach it while mounted on the windshield. Unfortunately, the data services do not work with my current cell phone (but how can I blame TomTom for that?). When it's time to change phones I'll be certain that I check compatibility to take advantage of the TomTom Plus features.

The device is BIG but I don't necessarily see where smaller is better when it comes to GPS. I don't live in a city where I'd try to stick it in my pocket and walk around to find an address. It's meant to go in my car and it fits there quite nicely. The screen is large and easy to view (I love that it has a light sensor and auto switches to nighttime view).

It's loaded with POI's - I even found my vet in there. Once you choose your category you can easily search by name. And how often do you not know the category of the place you are trying to go?

No worries on speed here either. If I take a turn that is "off my route," it recalculates a new route very quickly. I've tested this a great deal and find that it's very reliable.

The 20 GB hard drive has plenty of space for songs, pictures and audiobooks (but I'll keep using my iPod for the music and audiobooks). I thought the pictures were just a "cute" feature until I had a friend in my car who really liked browsing through them. You can never have enough places to carry pictures of your kids.

I can't wait to test it out more. Just don't turn your back on TomTom - you may be missing out!

The good, the bad and the ugly

The good: the bells and whistles, the things that sell a product at first glance, are superb. A huge range of languages and voices, an exceptionally bright and attractive display, very clear rendering of the computer generated voices, all make the product look like it would be very easy to use.

The bad part starts with the route planning. Being able to plan a route on the computer is why I bought this product instead of another one. I make four to ten stops a day across the states of Virginia and West Virginia, and I need to plan each trip in advance in order to minimize my driving. Nothing in the very sketchy owner's manual explained how to do this. I might add that for $699, you would think you'd get a good printed manual, not just a CD. A request to the support team provided the information (after a three day wait), but what I learned was that all I could do was to view the TomTom's own display on my computer screen instead of on the TomTom itself. That means I could not plan more than one segment of a trip at a time, since it doesn't allow waypoints. So I will have to continue buying a new copy of Microsoft's Streets and Trips each year.

Another thing that falls in the "bad" category is the POI functionality, as a previous reviewer mentioned. I don't always know where I'm going to be at the end of a work day, and I had hoped the POI feature would help me find a nearby hotel. All I can say is that I can pick up my cell phone and make a directory assistance call to locate a hotel faster than I can find one with this thing.

The ugly is that the maps are pathetically out-of-date. A switchback in one of Virginia's primary east-west highways, that was bypassed at least 16 years ago, is still shown on the TomTom. That might seem minor, but when you drive into that area, the device tells you to turn around and make a right turn to go back to where it thinks you should be. For someone unfamiliar with the area, that would be extremely confusing.

When I asked it to find an address on Main Street in my own town, I was told that it was five hours away in Northern Virginia. Other addresses in established neighborhoods weren't in its database. So I can't use it for route planning and it won't take me to many of the places I need to visit.

On top of everything else, it now won't turn either on or off. It is sitting there with an illuminated, but blank screen, totally useless. I can probably get the answer to that problem from Customer Support, too, in a couple of days.

In short, I wouldn't have bought this if I had been able to test it thoroughly first.

Beats the "installed" navigation unit.

I was happy with the navigation unit built in to my Nissan until I got one of these for the other car, and I have found the Tom-Tom to be much better. It offers a much richer set of features that understands what you are doing (for instance, it understands that you may want to find a gas station on the road ahead of you rather than a gas station that is 10 miles behind you). It hasn't locked up at all and offers a great set of features. The only complaint I had is that the windshield mount broke, but it was quickly and efficiently replaced - with no arguments (the fact that it broke at all is why I gave it 4 stars rather than 5).

Please be very aware. If you buy this product and it has been sitting on the shelves of the vendors for over 6-7 months, then good luck. TomTom Customer service refused to provide me with map updates for Northern America (or even my local area) and I just had this product for 9 months only. They insisted that I need to buy the $150 map update.

I highly do not recommend this at all. If I had known this is going to happen, I wouldn't have bought it.

The 910 is a great unit in a lot of ways. I find the interface very usable, the screen is bright and easy to read, the map display very intuitive, the audio directions outstanding.

Unfortunately, it can't find stuff very well at all.

In the last 30 days I have used the 910 to navigate to 5 different desinations that I was unfamiliar with. In every case it either got the desination completely wrong, or tried to direct me to my destination via roads that do not exist. (Note: this is after the most recent map update).

In the cases where I was misdirected, the actual destination was between 1 and 5 miles from where the TomTom sent me.

In the cases of the non-existant road I'll offer the most recent example: I was going to a business address near an airport. As I approached the airport TomTom had me get off the main road, drive through a residential area, into the back of an apartment complex, and indictated that I should drive through the fence into the field behind the apartments.
While this surely would have been the most direct route, it was obviously wrong. The map database is new last month, and no road had EVER been where I was being instructed to go.

The route calculation algorithm is also absurd. When asked for the FASTEST way between my house and my sisters, the 910 instructed me to get off the highway 3 exits earlier than I had expected, and navigated me through the center of the city. Even if it had NOT been rush hour and all the lights had been green, this route adds 10 minutes to the trip - my sister lives 1/2 mile off the highway, 3 exits up from where TomTom got me off. This happened to me a lot as I tested the unit on destinations that I knew well - it was consistently choosing routes that just didn't make sense; avoiding major roads in favor of residential areas with low speed limits and lots of turns, taking needless detours, and not using highways preferring to route me through city centers.

So the long and short of it is this: this is a great unit if you KNOW where you're going and just want to look cool, or like a pretty display and a voice to keep you company when you drive. It's also a good unit if you want to get someplace CLOSE to your desination and then ask directions. But for actually navigating you someplace you don't know and getting your there? Look elsewhere.

FANTASTIC!!

I tested it both in Europe and in USA and it works perfectly with no flaws. No problem turning on or with freezes as some people reported. RDS antenna reports traffic in Europe and redo the route to avoid it.
I strongly recommend buying it.

I have never owned a GPS before so I did hours of research before choosing the Tom Tom 910. I guess I just thought I'd get lucky and avoid one with a bad bracket. Unfortunately, by about the 4th day it was tilting down as predicted. Also, as a first time user, I did not find the product to be particularly easy to learn and found many of the much anticipated features required a subscription or other unexpected expense.

the window attachment on the t/t won't hold the unit up...it starts to sag after a few bumps... i have to let the t/t ride on the dashboard and use the attaching mechanism to keep it from sliding off...very poor design... i tried to do the update...it was so confusing that i must have selected the wrong update...anyway...the update caused the t/t to drop dead...hmmmm...what kind of update is that...

anyway...for $450, i just want to plug the thing in and "go"... i don't want to hassle trying to figure out updates which should be a slam dunk...i don't want to figure out how to jimmy the window attachment...

i would not recommend the t/t based on my experience...not at $450...

We bought the Tom Tom primarily because it has the US as well as the European maps included and are pretty happy with the overall performance. Some of the menues are a bit complicated and I had wished for a bit more customizing abibity for their structure, but the list of POIs is much better than in other navigation systems I tried (Nüvi, BMW).

But here is the catch: In a metropolitan area, one big advantage of any navigation systems are traffic updates. With the Tom Tom, you have to have a mobile data connection (costs me $20 a month) and they recently started billing us for the Tom Tom plus service as well ($30 a month). So the overall cost of this feature are just prohibitive, especially when compared to other products like the Nüvi where the traffic updates are free over FM.

I've owned three GPS units. The first came with an Acura we bought, (an awesome unit), a Garmin PDA/GPS (good device, too small screen), and the 910. My impressions after one month of owning the 910 are:
1) A great 'gadget', a so-so GPS;
2) I bought this because a friend has one and loves it. He was getting free map DVD upgrades (Garmin charged me $150). Now I find this was a limited time promotion and maps must be bought and downloaded. N. American maps are 1.4 GB and since I don't have high speed internet would've taken 25 hours to download;
3) Doesn't recognize my 25 year old address or the nearby post office address that's been in existence since the 1880's. I live in a gated community with private roads which the Garmin recognized. The 910 dosen't recognize the intersection of two highways 1/2 mile from me so I can't use the 'Home' feature;
4) Have the same problems with the windshield mount everyone else has. The unit is too heavey for the style mount supplied;
5) Tech support is marginal at best. Trying to upgrade the maps took about ten calls to the first level of support for one week. Was sent to the next level, waited on hold for 80 minutes and the problem was taken care of in five minutes;
6) The unit only tracks up, no matter which direction you're going. I can't tell which way (compass heading) I'm going. There is a compass feature that is about 1/4" in dia., and can't be seen from the driving position. All maps I've used have north in the up position, south down, etc. The Garmin can be programed north up or track up. I really miss this feature;
7) It has a clock, why can't it change from daytime to nighttime screen on it's own?;
8) Doesn't recognize USA zip codes.

I love putting pictures of my family in the slideshow, I may use the MP3 feature, don't know if I'll use the hands free phone feature (I have a Blue Tooth ear piece), but I'd trade it all for a powerful GPS that had the features my Acura GPS had, or at least most of them.

I wouldn't buy another one. It's probably OK for folks who are buying their first GPS.

My original purchase form Amazon was defective but customer svc. was great! I purchased a replacement from Circuit City and have been very happy. To address issues I've seen from other posts:
1) The maps work great in my area and have been 100% on target. A street address may be slightly off, but it takes you to the street just fine and you should be able to find the address on your own.
2) As far as the POI go, I have had no problem. There are many different options to choose from to search, so there shouldn't be any problem with finding what you're looking for.
3) Window mount - I tried it once and it worked just fine, but I don't use it since I'm a California resident and it is illegal. It would seem though the the problem has been fixed. I'm waiting for the realease of the dash mount for us CA residents.
4) Great extras. I really like the bluetooth function, except that I think I need a better microphone because the sound quality is not good. Great on-screen function though. The MP3 player is fun, but I tend to have feedback that makes it annoying after awhile. If I could figure out how to fix that I would definitely use it more often.
5) Only thing I don't care for is that I haven't figured out how to cancel a trip that I have plotted in and changed my mind about. Until you reach that destination it keeps trying to give you directions there, which is annoying. I'm sure there is a way to do this but I just haven't taken the time to figure it out.
6) A word of advice about customer service. If you go to the TomTom site and send an email question, you may never get an answer. I've sent two emails and have never heard back (at least a month ago). On the other hand, if you call the customer service number you can actually get a live person to talk to and they seem very helpful. That's definiely the route you want to go.
7) You should defintely make sure to get the most current maps for your area when you purchase. Things change so you want to be as up to date as possible.

All in all I am extremely happy with my TomTom. It takes me where I need to go with no worries, and that's what I bought it for. A great purchase.

I've had the unit for about a month and I'm having a difficult time with the docking station in the car. The suction part works fine but the arm does not hold the unit in place very well. Also when snaping the 910 to the dockng station sometimes it takes a couple of tries to make sure it's attached. This is a new unit I've used a Garmin unit in the past and did not have this problem. For these units to be portable they need a better docking interface. I can see a problem poping up very soon with a pin being broken or bent and there is no way to charge the device without the docking station.

I did my research on this unit and I had the most typical issue. Upon power up it just hangs at the splash screen. I was in a panic as I was to leave the USA in 2 days time. I researched the website and didnt find the exact symptom and resolution. I called the help line and was on hold for about 2minutes. The person on the other was American (no india help line) and walked me through the steps to correct the problem. I wanted to provide an explaination since most post dont list it. It appears that the latest build doesnt include all the necessary files for the system to boot up. So you have to Flash the device with the older version software and then upgrade to the newer version, both of which is on their website. The second upgrade is automatic when connected to the internet through the USB cradle. The upgrade took about 25minutes depending on your network connection speed. I used a cable modem.
br /Now with a functioning Tom Tom I was off to France...
br /The accuracy and detail of the maps was incredible. On the many traffic circles I could easily tell which exit to take. It would even tell me prior to the circle which exit I wanted. I never got lost. The regular Europe map was detailed enough. I was even in some remote areas, it worked great. It comes in handy to find places to eat nearby. Also saved me $100 when the gas station that Hertz told me to fill up the rental car was not there...The only one by the airport only takes France credit cards with the chip in them...no attendant just a machine to take credit card only. Last time I couldnt find the gas station and I was charged by rental car company $125 for 3/4 tank of gas...This time the fill up was $40 Euro. If you take the tram to go sight seeing the unit comes in handy since you will have to walk a distance to your destination. It is nice to save the tram station as a favorite so you can also get back home after walking around the city. I used GPS coordinates to set up the tram station. With just a few clicks I was able to come and go without anyones help. I learned the city better than some of the locals..
br /I plan in using it in the US too, just have had enough travel for now..
br /I didnt have a problem with the mount yet...that is the other common issue. I did connect the unit such that it would rest on the dash and not strain the mount. The unit is heavy and the G force the mount sees over time from road bounce can be huge.

Considered the Nuvi or the TT 910, very similar units and $$. The rap on the 910 was a weak support on the mounting bracket and a sub-par database. Elected to go with the 910 anyway due to the included European database. The mounting bracket support LOOKS weak but appears more than adequate. The database has much greater detail than a my previous in-car GPS. I am also receiving a free database upgrade ($6 S&H). My only mild gripe is that the destination is not pinpoint accurate every time - maybe 50-200 feet off - not a real problem if you are aware of it.

VERY VERY Helpful system and very great , i own it, in my opinion it's the BEST navigating system available ( not to mention the many other capabilities it has ) however the only down 2 points are :
br /1-) it doesn't tell you which side of the street your destination is on.
br /2-) the maps should be updated more often, right now it covers about 99 % of the US which is excellent but some more updates for the maps will be better .
br /the system is stable and very easy to use as a touch screen , very good satellite signal reception, ability to save ur Satellite Position as a favourite ( helpful in case ur destination or ur position is not on the map yet )., mp3 player, .. etc.

(Updated) Maybe it's not so good after all.

For years, I've been printing out maps from Google Local and Mapquest (as evidenced by the scads of old printouts in my back seat), and figured it was good enough until GPS units became more intuitive and less expensive. It wasn't until my mother in-law got a Nuvi 350 for Christmas that I decided to take the plunge.

Initially, I was sold on the Nuvi, but after comparing them in the store and seeing that the 910 added Bluetooth capability and iPod control, I was sold. Sure the Nuvi 360 does Bluetooth, but it won't talk to my beloved iPod.

I thought it would be nice to use the few times a year I go out of town, but decided to test it out to make sure I hadn't overspent. The first day took some getting used to. Like others, I noticed that after five miles or so, the Tomtom was face-down on my dashboard. Apparently unlike others, I read the manual and discovered that I hadn't locked it in to position completely. Problem solved.

I was happy to discover that most of my routes were the same routes the Tomtom chose. Other times, I found myself fighting with it, because it seemed to be sending me out of the way. I figured "what the heck" and tried it. I didn't save much time, but I have to admit, the routes it chose were faster than what I had been used to.

That brings me to the maps... more often than not, they're great. But every now and then, it would do things like tell me to turn left on a right turn only road, or show that I was driving over open land, because it thought the road was about 100 feet ahead of where it really was. Now, the nice thing about this, is that it never once had a problem recalculating. On the left turn I couldn't take, it chose a new route in seconds when I turned right. And on the road that was off, it snaps back on the road once I drive around a curve. It still seems to think that my house is two doors down from where it really is, but I know where I live, so that isn't a big deal.

I started playing around with the POI's and was really impressed with how current they were. It seemed to know about most small businesses that opened less than a year ago, and they're fairly easy to use once you understand how the software expects you to use them. I've seen people making their own POI's online, and downloaded a few, all of which worked well. I haven't got around to making my own, but I plan to in the near future.

A final word about the maps and POI's: Tomtom is now offering a free upgrade disc after you pay $6 shipping. It hasn't come yet, but I expect it will fix the minor issues I've had.

The Bluetooth implementation is great, but whether or not it will work with your phone is dicey. It didn't work with my Blackjack at all, and this apparently has something to do with Samsung's implementation. Their site says it won't work with the KRZR K1, but I found that all of the features work just fine.

If you have a data plan, the Tomtom will use your phone to download weather, traffic, GPS updates, POI's, and some different colors for your maps. I found that all of these seemed to work, but the traffic didn't appear to do very much for me. I don't know if it just wasn't up to date, or if I just happened to luck out and download the info on days when traffic wasn't bad.

Similarly, the integrated speakerphone worked well, and the sound quality was surprisingly clear.

I loaded some MP3's on to the built-in drive, and connected my iPod with the optional iPod cable. The internal speaker is good for the voices, but not very good for music. If you plan to use this as a music player, you'll want to find a way to connect it to your stereo. The iPod interface was decent, and the built-in MP3 player functions similarly. Both will pause the music if directions are being spoken, or if you're on a call.

One last quirk: when plugged in to a switched outlet in your car, it turns itself on when you start your car. This is great. When you turn off the car though, it stays on. This is not so great, though it's presumably to remind you to undock your Tomtom so it doesn't get stolen.

All in all, I was really impressed with this unit, and with the POI's and ease of use with the included remote, I find myself using it constantly. If you're in the market for a Nuvi, it's certainly worth considering.

01/25 UPDATE:
Well, two days after posting the above, my unit stopped switching between night and day, which was really annoying. I just got the replacement unit today, and it has dead pixels! I really love the way the GO 910 works, and can't bring myself to downgrade to a Garmin 550, so I'm going to give it another shot. Hopefully, the third time will be the figurative charm.

For anyone wondering, Amazon has been nothing but wonderful about exchanging the defective units.

Esentially, this is a very good product, even though it is rather pricey. However, one of the flaws that I've found rather disturbing, is oftentimes when I use the house charger, I find that the device has not been recharged, but when I use the car charger it charges right up. This does not happen all the time, just often enough to be disturbing. It also takes a long time to get a readng from the satelites. I've clocked in as long as 45 minutes before getting a reading. I've had to rely on good old paper maps in the meantime while waiting for this pricey gps to figure out where I am and where I need to go and how to get there.

Overall the prodct is good. Beware of setting "shortest distance" if in the mountains. I was guided from the Interstate to a local highway, which turned into a gravel raod. This is simply one great machine. But it's not perfect. The documentation could be better and the database seems to be off a little. That is, occasionally you will be directed down a ghost road or to a location that's 100 or so feet from your destination. And its "points-of-interest" menu could use some work.

Nevertheless, in general, it makes for stress-free driving. You know you are not lost now. And you will never get lost in the future. Missing an exit or making a wrong turn is no big deal as a new set of clear directions is automatically delivered to you in seconds.

But, when parking, remember to close your windows and lock your doors. This is a high priority item on any thief's list. However, my sister, whose Tom-Tom was stolen from her driveway, did not hesitate to buy another one immediately. It's that good.

We love our Tom-Tom. We did a long cross-country trip and it made all the difference. We never got lost and never got into one of those husband/wife arguments of go right/no go left...7000 miles later we are still a happy couple! TomTom has been able to find really remote addresses and the "voices" are very clear and pleasant.

The only negative is that we live in Santa Fe, NM and obviously the necessary uptating has not been done. The result is that, as far as SF is concerned, Tom-Tom takes us, literaly, all over the map...Is this also the case of other fast-growing cities?

Great unit. Good visibility day and night. Has accurate routing so far. Just purchased in October 2006 so haven't used a lot. Love having the maps already loaded on it. No need to install anything. We enjoy going wine tasting at the wineries and love it that most of the wineries are already loaded in the unit with great driving directions to the tasting rooms. Saves time in trying to find the tasting rooms. So far we are very happy with the unit. We are planning a trip to the Tri-Cities (Pasco, Richland & Kenniwick, WA) for wine tasting. We'll be testing the unit up there for accuracy!

TOM TOM GO 910
br /
br /I purchased this unit in June 2007 specifically because it had a map of Europe preloaded. I brought the TomTom home 3 days before departure, charged the unit at home and then drove a day to get familiar with the controls. So far so good.
br /
br /I packed the unit for my trip to central England where I planned to spend several days driving though the country. Mistake - to save weight I only took the car connecting stuff. Arriving in London, I installed the 910 in the rental car and set off on my trip. The TomTom has a nasty shortcoming - it powers ON when it senses power to the connector, but does not power OFF when the ignition is turned off. The three-hour battery (only 1 hour after 8 months) died overnight since the unit was still ON when I parked. Day two the unit was still dead after powering on the car. A call to TomTom was fruitless; I was on hold for so long my calling card expired. The unit was simply dead for the rest of my stay in England.
br /
br /After exchanging the unit for a replacement, I have learned to tolerate the many faults that make this unit a less than pleasurable experience. (It's that or shell out more money for another brand)
br /
br /* I purchased the unit in June and exchanged in July. The maps are hopelessly out of date. Here in California there are housing developments built in 2005 that are not in the US maps.
br /
br /* I live in an unincorporated part of Orange County, California with a Santa Ana mailing address. TomTom 910 considers me to be living in the city of Orange. To be fair, I am about 200 feet from Orange city limits, but I do not live in Orange. This is not a GPS function; it is a map problem. TomTom support tells me "they are not responsible for the map data."
br /
br /* The unit always announces, "You have reached your destination" when I am hundreds of yards short of my destination. In dense neighborhoods, this is often 2 to 3 turns short of my actual arrival point. Yes, the map indicates where I should be, but depending on the voice prompts it is a joke to ever reach the correct driveway or even the correct city block.
br /
br /* []
br /
br /* As many others have written the reset error is very disconcerting. Whenever the power runs down (a frequent occurrence when jumping out of the car with a load of papers or groceries), I need to bring the unit into the house and charge the device on its poor fitting desk stand. TomTom support has told me the car charger is "only to maintain a charge, but is incapable of charging a discharged battery.
br /
br /* To press the reset requires a pin or needle. As a single guy, I often have neither. The reset button is too small to touch with a straightened paper clip.
br /
br /* The power cord does not stay in the ugly docking cradle. To charge the unit I need to carefully balance the device on the cradle and tape the power cord in the stand. Oddly enough, the USB cable is permanently attached, but the dc cord is a very loose fit and often pulls out, leaving me with a dead battery even after an assumed overnight charge.
br /
br /* Unlike my Garmin, the TomTom 910 cannot accept third party maps. I frequently travel in Mexico ad was able to buy a basic map for that county. No such availability for TomTom.
br /
br /* Missed turns are quietly rerouted. The Garmin I am familiar with will announce, "Recalculating". Often, the best thing is to retrace my route until I am back where I should have been. TomTom does not indicate my mistake, and it has often cost me many miles to follow the new route to my destination.
br /
br /* As I said, I bought the device in June 2007 expecting a year of free traffic subscription. When I contacted TomTom, they indicated the promotion ending at the end of 2006. This is also what the materials in the box indicate.
br /
br /* Itinerary planning is what TomTom calls a multi stop trip. But, the 910 default is to make intermediate stops "waypoints", not "destinations." More than once, my girlfriend has driven right past her first stop with nary a peep from the TomTom since it was just a waypoint. (Other than to use alternative routing, why are waypoints necessary? Destinations should be the default setting.)
br /
br /* The suction mount securely fastens to the window however; the weight of the 910 requires a "pillow" under the unit to hold it from falling towards the dashboard.
br /
br /There are some positive aspects to the 910"
br /
br /* The street announcement is a very nice feature, one my girlfriend really appreciates. Newer upline models from most manufacturers also have this feature.
br /
br /* The Bluetooth is a great hands free device for my cell phone; first a Motorola Razr and now a Blackberry Curve.
br /
br /* I have never tested the picture storage, not sure why I would want to see a slide show of family photos while I drive.
br /
br /* I also have never used the mp3 feature. Why would I listen to music from the built-in speaker when my car has a multi-speaker set-up? And no, my car 2007 car does not have an auxiliary audio input jack.
br /
br /* There are many voices in the GPS and more can be downloaded. Okay, I will admit on my first day on England (remember it only worked my first day) I did set the voice to a British accent. Since getting my replacement unit, I have never changed the voice.
br /
br /In conclusion, I feel TomTom was out to sell a device with as many features as one could imagine into the 910. Sadly, they did a mediocre job of the most basic function of a GPS - fast and simple routing.
br /
br /I received an email awhile back inviting me to apply to their advisory panel. I never heard back. I assume they reviewed my communications and only wanted positive voices heard.
br /
br /Would I but another TomTom? Not unless I could get a 30 day trial. Most stores here in California give no more than 14 days to return a technology device.
br /
br /Do I miss my Garmin Quest? No, I use it in my every day truck. I let the girlfriend use the TomTom.
br /
br /Yes, I know the TomTom Go 910 is discontinued; but I write this review as personal therapy. Good Luck to anyone buying one on eBay. [...]

Because I travel a ton, I always rent a GPS with my rental cars. The GO 910 is one of the more difficult ones to learn how to use. Plus, the car charger is faulty (I called the manufacturer) in that it only helps sustain a charge for a couple weeks. After that, you have to plug it into the wall charger. Pretty annoying if you want to know the truth.

Works Pretty Good . . . eventually

The first unit that was received functioned initially, but then started acting up. Uncertain if damaged in shipment (poor packaging) or due to software upgrade process. The unit was promptly replaced by 17th St Photo.

The 2nd unit functioned erratically. Tech support via e-mail (UK site by default) was strong at first, but after several tried fixes that didn't work, tech support response stopped after indicating a RA would be provided to return for repair. Not interested in that prospective time delay, I sought Tech support via telephone (U.S. site). It was prompt, courteous, and professional. Software configuration problem was fixed and the unit works well.

The unit takes some time to get used to. The User Manual, even CD version, is an overview and doesn't provide much depth. The POI data is pretty decent, but I will likely seek upgraded data. I am currently awaiting a response about replacement of a "droopy" vehicle mount.

In all, I am pleased with the unit. The real test will come during a driving trip around Germany, the motivator for buying the unit.

The TomTom 910 comes fully loaded, meaning I've use it in USA Canada as well as Europe (England etc.) as I said it's fully loaded. The operation of this unit is amazing, take the wrong turning and it will recalculate in seconds and put you back on the correct path. Push the home button it will take you home no matter where you are.
Customer service is excellent, they replaced the car window mount telling me there is a problem with the original one. They correct it before I could complain.
I give the TomTom Go 910 unit and service Five Stars

I purchased this GPS because it came with maps of Europe. On my trip to Edinburh, Belfast, Dublin, London it was a life saver. I don't care if you have the most detailed paper map of these cities, it is impossible as a newcomer to get from one place to another using just the paper map, especially if you miss a turn on instructions given to you by a friendly native. There are so many one way streets, tiny streetname signs that you'd be lost for hours. Then throw in round-abouts. You need a GPS and this unit made only one mistake, missing the hotel location my about 100 meters.

This is a highly accurate, fairly easy to use GPS and the spoken street names and warnings are invaluable.

This is a great gps. It has preloaded US and Europe maps. Easy to use but not without hiccups. It is sensitive to being disconnected while powered on. Always turn off before disconnecting. The reset is hard to find (its next to the power pins) but it usually fixes any locking up.It is a bit chunky now the newer model is slimmer but this is great value.

I bought this with high expectations, and from the referral of a friend. It was GREAT for the first 3 or 4 uses, but now, it's stuck on the first screen, and "locked up" so to speak. I was on my way to Poland and it literally would not work no matter what I did. Being in Germany, I HAVE to have something reliable, and especially on my way to a 3rd world country, driving alone, and not speaking their language. Therefore, unable to stop and ask for directions. Thankfully, I was close to a base and able to buy another GPS... one that worked. I am returning the TomTom and have already replaced it with the Navigon. It has yet to fail me. Maybe I got a dud, or maybe that is the extent of the TomTom quality. By the way, Polish pottery shopping was great, thanks to the Navigon!

I liked my brother's tomtom on his mobile phone and thought it was cool but at the time, I did not have a smart phone and did not want one so it was not an option. I did some research and found tomtom 910. It has plenty of nice features 1) ipod connect (a selling feature to which they do not sell you the wires to connect your tomtom to your ipod though) 2) large hard drive space (which means its bulk and heavy) 3) can connect to your phone for traffic and as a handsfree set (which means they do not package an fm transmitter for traffic, you HAVE TO HAVE mobile data service [mobile internet] or else your screwed) 4) save point of interest (You can save the address but you can't insert your own name to identify the place, nor does it have an up to date point of interest database and it doesn't even allow you to have a contact list. The point of interest does not even contain phone numbers, which would be nice if you're on the road heading to a store and want to check if they have what you want in stock before going there.
br /
br /Having used TOMTOM 910 for nearly a year now, I have to say their directions SUCK! You don't know how many times the stupid device has tried to send me down a one way street in the wrong direction. Also, one of my biggest complaints is USABILITY. They stick too much information on the dashboard and important stuff like the what to look for next is stuck at the bottom of the screen in small text. It really sucks when the street is a long name because its hard to read.
br /
br /LESSON: The lesson I've learned is to avoid TOMTOM and any future products that they have. Buy GARMIN, and if you're looking for cheap products, buy Magellan or some other lesser known brand, but AVOID tomtom. Their direct sucks, their products are pricey and they're always quick to sell you more accessories to add on (while other companies will package stuff like antenna for traffic in hopes of selling you the service).

This and all of the TomTom products seem full of bugs. With the 3 people I know that have different models we have ALL had problems.
br /
br /Anything from breaking within days of buying it to just bad directions. You can be in a parking lot and this thing will make you leave the lot, take a left, drive in a complete U, and then take a right. Does it ALL the time rather then just telling me to take a right out of the parking lot.
br /
br /TomTom is just junk as they are made in China and they act like it. Try one of the other brands do not get stuck like i did.

I bought a 910 2 years ago. It has pretty much since then been sat side by side with my Sirius Sat. radio on the dash of my truck. My Tom Tom Died last week from what I can only summise as being overheated, I summise this as I have had problems in the past with the unit not switching on when hot.
br /I called Tom Tom tech support to be told the unit was out of warranty and they do not offer a repair service.
br /I was offered a Loyal customer discount, which basically meant I'd have to spend alot of money with them to get a replacement.
br /Funny how this device has sat on my dash for only 2 years and dies whereas my Sat. radio has been there for over 5 years and is still going strong.
br /All in all I am throughly disapointed in Tom Tom's service and the quaility of thier equipment.

I got one of these pieces of junk for my birthday a year ago - I think it has worked a total of once. First, the mounting arm does not keep the product at an angle where it can be viewed. I contacted TomTom and they told me that my mounting arm was not part of a recall of mounting arms - so I had to buy a new one. I did - twice - neither worked. I called TomTom again and they told me that the mounting arm frequently malfunctioned when the temperature was over 80 degrees - I live in Texas - the temperature is over 80 degrees 6 months of the year.
br /Next, I had to constantly restart the TomTom - it seemed to not like to work for more than a couple of hours at a time. Then, yesterday, I tried to restart it and nothing happened so I boxed the whole thing up (3 docking arms and all) and mailed it back to TomTom. Save your money - get a Garmin!

No firmware upgrade but locks up every 2-3 uses. The reset feature is where it shines: they decided to make it hell forcing you to have a small paper clip at hand and start hoping this thing revives after a series of second counting and button pressing in the right sequence. TOTAL MADNESS in my opinion. I am today a happy owner of a NON TOM TOM navigator and will never go back to this brand. I had it. And pls don't get fooled by otherwise positive comments. This small problem makes the product a true nightmare.

I live overseas in the Netherlands and have to have a GPS to get around. I puchased a Tom Tom 910, paid top dollar, and was expecting to get the best. 3 months later the mount breaks, so I took it back to the shop I bought it at and had it replaced (1yr warranty). 6 months later the new mount breaks. Took it back to the shop and they told me Tom Tom will not replace the mount because Tom Tom said I am taking it off the windshield incorrectly. They don't even know how I take it off the windshield, BUT I have consumer reports stating how defective there mounts are. This is an example of how a company is trying to save money when they built a crappy product. I would not suggest Tom Tom for this reason.

I got a Tom Tom 910 for Christmas. I used it when I traveled out of town. I really loved it, but I put it away and didn't use it for a few months because I didn't go anywhere.
br /
br /When I needed it it wouldn't start. I reset it. I charged it. I reset it again. Called Tom Tom customer service. They made me reset and recharge and then told me the battery was dead. They said that I could return it for repair, and I asked how much would that cost. Answer - more than a new unit! I asked if I could buy a battery and they said the battery COULD NOT BE CHANGED!!!!!!!! So basically I used it a couple of dozen times and then threw it out.
br /
br /I won't buy another GPS that has a permanent battery.

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
br /
br /Bought the 910 about a year and a half ago. Stopped working so I followed on-line suggestions to no help . Want to meet the engineer who located the reset hole on this puppy. Even the tech rep admitted it was an embarassement. Techie told me I probably left it on the dock too long without using. Where said I is that in the product information (it's not)
br /
br /Sent it back (under warranty) and while I waited bought a NUVI. No comparison, the NUVI is much more intuitive and user friendly. Tom Tom replaced it with a "refurbished" unit. Didn't even bother to use it until tonight when I gave it to my daughter to use on a Fourth of July junket. Problem is the replacement unit is "home based" in Kinsale Ireland. Some nice travel photos were included though. Followed on-line instructions. tried to download fix through cell phone as recommended. Ireland centered unit doesn't recognize my Verizon cell.
br /
br /Set up the home docking station outside with an extension cord and tried to re-set unit with my laptop on-line. 20 minutes later-No good. Tried to call "customer support". Their hours are now 8:30 to 7:00. Hey Tommy Boy what happens if you have a problem with your navigation unit outside bankers hours?
br /
br /I'll be on the phone tomorrow but my daughter will be gone on her trip. Ironically, I'll be in Kinsale next week. Maybe I'll try to find the prior owner and we can go over his photos. Hey maybe when he returned his unit he got my Amityville, NY defective unit in exchange. Wouldn't that be a pub story?
br /
br /Whether I go to Ireland, New England or locally, I'll put my trust in NUVI. What kind of quality control department sends out a replacement unit without testing it or re-setting it. What kind of International marketing outfit that sells vehicle navigation units does not provide access to 24 hour customer support?
br /
br /I've owned both Tom Tom and NUVI, and how do you think I'd answer that question?

This is the only navigation device I have owned so I cannot compare it to other devices. Generally, this is a good and useful tool with a lot of powerful features. I would rate it at 5 stars if it always worked as well as it usually does. However there are two points that bring it down significantly in my opinion.
br /The first is the build quality. As others have mentioned the screen freezes (black, but with the power light on) sometimes, when attempting to power the unit on or off. Resetting solves the problem but the reset button is placed in a very hard to reach spot. If you don't happen to keep paperclips handy in your car you may find it very hard to reset as you can't use the point of a pen or anything else straight and pointy to press the button.
br /Also, the quality of the unit is only mediocre - the rubber non-slip "feet" were peeling off my device after only two months, the windshield mount isn't strong enough to support the weight of the unit so it droops (more on this below) and the connections on the mount are fragile. I bought an FM transmitter mount with the intention of using it to listen to music from my iPod through my car stereo, and the connection for the iPod cable broke the second time I used it.
br /The second negative point is the customer service. Submitting questions by email through their website yields slow responses, and often ones that are less than helpful. At the time I bought my 910, the maps that came with it were outdated by one version. I asked, justifiably I thought, if they would provide me with the map that was current as of the purchase date. They answered in the negative, basically saying that they won't be responsible for making sure that what is being sold is up to date, but their answers were so oblique that it took me several exchanges with them to understand what they were trying to say. Another customer service issue was with the "drooping" windshield mount. I found information on their site about this problem, and they provided a link to a free replacement. The link was outdated (the program was expired, they said) and I had to contact customer service again for this. They did make good on their promise to replace the mount, and it didn't take that long, however the new mount was no better than the old one. My solution finally was to mount it low on the windshield so the GPS rests on the dash.
br /Also, I find much of the information in the support section of their website to be overly complicated or incomplete or some combination of the two.
br /Lastly, their software for managing the 910 through your computer is designed, not exactly poorly - but not very well. I just paid for a new map version through the TomTom website. However, I am unable so far to download the map. It is not showing up in the "My TomTom" application, which as far as I can tell is the only place I can download it from. I have had to contact customer service again about this issue, and face the prospect of waiting up to 48 hours before I can begin to solve this latest problem.

After two weeks of experience in Idaho and Florida a navigation device like this is a wonderful assistant to have in the car. As a navigation aid it is hard to imagine anything better. BUT, the instructions are poor, the software that comes with the instrument (I'm talking of the OSMac software) is extremely slow. And finally there is a complete reset sequence together with another Tom Tom Clear software product that is necessary when the machine freezes. This has happened to me four times in two weeks - which seems excessive. Phone customer service is good: email customer service was very slow in responding.

Great navigation system, very few errors and quick route recalc. Celeb voices are disappointing. I downloaded John Cleese and was expecting a Python-esque or Fawlty Towers type Cleese, but instead got the actor. A little humor, but no abuse. I have no reason, based on that, to try Dennis Hopper or Mr. T.
br /
br /I love the navigation system. The 20GB allows plenty of space for ALL of the maps with plenty left over for MP3s that can be played via the car's FM using the add-on mount (purchased because the original broke, of course). here in Europe, I happily travel through throughcountries without hassle. If I visit the States, the US/Canada maps are there as well.
br /
br /Updating software and maps (as well as plus features) is done via PC with an included USB bracket. Very handy. I also install Bob Tom Show MP3s this way. I guess you could do music... ;)
br /
br /Plus features include (at extra cost) "safety" camera locations, the celeb voices, traffic updates -- but this requires a link with your cell phone -- I believe others do it through the nav system itself -- that would be very handy when dealing with a German 'stau', as well as others.
br /
br /But if you don't want to be annoyed, look elsewhere as well. The windshield mount sucks. 1 star. It droops. All the time. And eventually, because a lousy design (TomTom knows this) it breaks. And you'll spend $50 U.S. buying a new one.
br /
br /The mount is THAT annoying. And don't expect the 'geniuses' in support to be much help. Had to buy a new mount through the 'net due to their cluelessness. So, a great nav system with a lousy mounting system and poor support.
br /
br /Do some serious research before you buy a nav system. Good luck.

Mixed bag - not the best unit for the US

I wanted a portable GPS for both the US and Europe. The Go 910 was the most cost effective for both continents. In terms of it's GPS navigation function (it's intended role after all) it does a reasonable job. It det4ects satellites quickly and in general gets you from A to B. The maps and directions aren't perfect but if you're prepared then this doesn't need to be a problem.
So would I recommend it? No. Why? Well here's the list:
1. The mount is appalling - it's just not strong enough for the unit which will sag and in some cases pull the mount of the windscreen
2. The mount won't stick to a wide variety of surfaces so it can only be mounted on a windscreen/windshiled which places the unit out of reach!
3. The mount has a very strange connection to the unit which is bespoke and requires a training video before it can be used! This is clearly an example of an engineering solution that wasn't thought about before implementation.
The mount has supposed to have been overhauled and modified but it still makes the unit dangerous to use unless precautions are taken. Yes I do mean dangerous especially when the unit comes off the windscreen suddenly and shoots across the cabin of the car, etc. On this point alone I can't recommend the unit.
4. The screen can't cope with bright sunlight without some sort of additional cover. This is the case even with the brightness turned all the way up.
5. Battery life is okay (4 - 5 hours) but can only be recharged via the stupid mount. I'd much rather have the power supply from the cigarette lighter go straight to the unit rather than rely on the mount.
6. As another poster said it's a real shame that the map only tracks up. It would be nice if it could be set so that North is always up.
7. Can't set an address by US Zip code. This is a real drawback especially if an address is otherwise only known by a PO Box number.
So if you really need an economical unit that covers Europe and the US buy this as it is the most cost effective solution. Otherwise it's obvious flaws mean that I have to recommend another unit and probably a unit from another manufacturer.

Started having display problems from day 2....flashing and cycling between day and night. Need to use it for the time being, but will have to return it for replacement. Maps are a little out dated but lots of freeway construction in the Houston area. Haven't had any tracking problems and the re-route feature is great. Had to fool the unit into letting me use an alternate route to get to my lake house. Added favoties to navigate to. Not all addresses are defined with the correct cities. Post office info should be a requirement for map builders. Found it hard to communicate mapping problems to manufacturer.

I'll be selling this thing to the first sucker that comes along and will never buy from this company again. Excellent!! Quick response to directions, that other products don't have.
br /You will recieve instructions well in advance of your approach, where-as other comprobable products sometimes give instructions AFTER you have gone past the point of making a turn.
br /Mapping of US, so far exceeds other similar product. Have not yet been told "street does not exist".
br /Dissapointed in not having RDS-TMC available in the US.(maybe soon to come).

Good for those who are lost all the time...

If you need to get someone something that will help them find their way and their not so good at reading a Mapsco then this is the right choice. It comes with several handy features like bluetooth speakerphone, it reads the name of the next street not just how far, it can hold music and pictures, and it works well at night. the only draw backs I have found so far is that the day display can get glare from the sun preventing clear view, the plug in to the cd/radio to have the sound come thru the car speakers is a little difficult or non-existant depending on your car stereo, the extended microphone doesn't really help unless it's next to your mouth, and after a few bumps the gps likes to start facing downward.

A must have

I purchased the 910 2 years ago when I was in the US. I had to buy a new one because my first one was stolen out of my car.

IMPORTANT TIPS

1. Do not leave your Tom Tom in your car.
2. Do not leave your Docking station fixed to the window.
3. Wipe off the ring that the docking station leaves behind.

ALL OF THESE MISTAKES ARE WELCOME SIGNS FOR THIEVES!!!!!!!.

I am in the military, and now live in Europe and the Tom Tom takes me were i want to go. I have used it in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, and the Netherlands with out a single problem. I have to say the best feature on the 910 is the built in 20G hard drive (it is actually only 11G once everything is updated), but that is still a lot of music and pictures. Next I would have to say the warnings for the traffic cameras has saved my @ss sooo many times. Tom Tom has just changed their software for hooking up the Tom Tom to the computer so I am getting used to it. Their are only 2 down sides to this product, and they arent all that bad.

1. When my phone is connected to the Tom Tom, and someone calls it uses the internal speaker instead of my car speakers. It works fine when playing music, or when the unit gives directions.

2. Tom Tom does not track the product code and product registration in their system, so if your Tom Tom is stolen, and some one else tries to connect it to the Tom Tom web site for updates or to remove the security feature, duplicate product registrations do not raise a flag on their end. A positive note however, is that Tom Tom will give you a pretty good customer discount if your product is stolen provided you fax them a copy of the police report and the sales receipt.

SO KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This item has been really good with one exception the window mount is flimsy and i had to have it replaced once. I like the fact that you can add tunes to it and pictures. I also recommend a fm transmitter so you can hear everything over your factory radio. Overall I like this unit a lot

This is my first GPS device. I am habitually getting lost, and the online mapping services don't always do directions any justice. I do a lot of public speaking, and getting to my destination on time is a must.

With the TomTom 910, I can easily get to where I need to be without any problems, and it even gives me an approximate ETA on when I'll arrive. No more trying to look at printed pieces of paper with directions while driving and trying to find street names when it's dark - and getting stressed out worrying that I'll get lost and be late. And no more trying to drive and watch my odometer to see if I've driven "2.7 miles" yet to look for a specific street whose sign is blocked by tree branches. Now the TomTom walks me though where I need to go - step by step. It gives me plenty of warning time as to my next turn, so I can be in the proper lane beforehand.

I used it in Center City Philadelphia yesterday, and it did the job perfectly. Even with the taller buildings and cityscapes, it had no problem finding the GPS and knowing my exact location. It quickly sets on where I am and calculates the best route. No waiting for it to position itself, as I've read about other devices in other reviews.

This is the best money I've spent in a while. I highly recommend it to anyone who drives to unfamiliar places or relies on online mapping services to print their route so they can get to their destination.

It has an input to plug in your IPod, so you can listen to your tunes through the TomTom's speaker. While the speaker is perfect for speech/directions, I'm not quite sure it would please an audiophile who wants to use it to listen to music. I'll stick to the Bose speakers in my car for that. But for it's main purpose of providing accurate directions, it's a keeper.

The TomTom GO 910 Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator is an excellent device. However, it does not work very well for vehicle use because the mount is manufactured so poorly. The suction cup apparatus does not stay in one place, and the portion of the stand that offers a swivel movement randomly drops to its own position without notice. Very frustrating! But as for the TomTom unit, it is a great product!

When I first got the unit, both the application and maps were outdated. I was able to use TomTomHome to update the application to the latest version, but the maps update is nowhere to be found on the web site. I called TomTom Support 866-486-6866. Within reasonable wait time, I was able to talk to a support tech. After verifying the receipt, he added the US map update to my TomTom account without charge. TomTom guarantees the latest map after purchase. The updated map is more accurate than the Magellan 4000 that I purchased just three months ago.
br /
br /I am also enjoying the free real time traffic update right now. But for silly reasons, the free service expires every three months and I need to request reactivations. The traffic data is much better than any free traffic data that you can get from Google or other sources. You do need to have a cell phone with wireless data service and bluetooth to communicate with the server.
br /
br /I like the fact that there are tons of storage on the 20GB internal drive. I can add more voices, color schemes, and custom POIs. There are many free POIs on the Internet. TomTom's built-in POIs are pretty complete to begin with.
br /
br /You have the option to turn on Text-to-speech for voice turn-by-turn prompt. Some people may feel that it may be a little too wordy. I prefer the use of special tones rather than an English sentence at the turning points.
br /
br /The unit is not slim or easily pocketable. But the battery seems to last a long time even with screen on. There are battery saving options that will automatically turn off the screen between turns and turn off the unit entirely when your turn off the car.
br /
br /Overall, I found it very satisfactory as the map and POIs are complete and the unit is easy to operate. These are the most important things for a GPS.

Great Job!

Before my wife convinced me to get one, I thought purchasing a GPS device was silly and extravagant. Now that we have one and have seen all that it can do, I'm glad we have it. It's at least fun and at most a valuable tool for anyone traveling in unknown surroundings. The TomTom 910 is very easy to use right out of the box. It adjusts very quickly to changes in the planned route and gets you back on track. The 910 warns you well in advance of upcoming turns or changes in direction, including the name of the new street or road. It repeats the instructions often enough so that you almost can't make a mistake even in the seemingly, most difficult situations. The display is excellent, showing you graphically where you are in relation to your route, as well as, how much further to the next turn and to your final destination. And all of that is just the basics; it does so much more. I highly recommend it!

I just returned from a 3 week vaction in Italy. We drove everywhere from Rome to Lake Como. I was amazed with the accuracy of the Tom Tom. I also have a Garmin in the states but purchased the Tom Tom as it was the only one I found with all of the European maps preloaded, at the time. I have used it for several months prior to my trip and have had no issues with the mount. If it's properly mounted it seems to be no issue. I did have a problem when I first used the Tom Tom Home program on the computer but after spending about 30 minutes on the phone with their service department the problem was corrected and I have had no issues since.
br /It was a lifesaver for me in Italy. I never would have used some of the alleys and gravel paths that the Tom Tom accurately found as the roads I needed to use.

This is the 2nd TomTom unit I've had, the first got stolen. I just love the product. I've seen Garmin, Cobra, and many from car manufacturers. The Lexus product is the absolute worse I've ever seen then comes Cobra. Garmin is good but way over priced. TomTom will get you where you need to be. In the end you just have to use a little bit of brains- sometimes TomTom is a few feet or yards off from your exact target. It might get you to the shopping center but you need to actually read the signs and drive to the exact store. Or it might get you to the residential street but you might be a few houses short of the exact house you are trying to get too. Not a big deal, your still the one driving right. Garmin seems to get the house dead on and even knows the side of the street, but I don't think it's worth a couple hundred bucks.

I purchased the TomTom 910 after reviewing a number of GPS products in anticipation of a trip to France Belgium. (My navigation skills are not what they were.) The fact that European maps are preloaded sold me. (GPS map software purchased separately is not cheap!) It performed entirely up to my expectations. Note: although it is portable offers a pedestrian option, its "fatter" profile is not as convenient for hand carrying as other GPS's might be.

This GPS is awesome. The only problem I have is that, at least in England, I can't get it to tell me what the speed limit is. It will beep if I am speeding, but it won't show what the limit is. Also, sometimes it tells me to go places and guides to the end of a road. Probably happens with all GPS', and I notice with regular updates, some of those problems go away.

I have bad luck with GO 910. The navigator was working fine until I loaded music and photos. Since then it crashed about 10 times. The soft reset on the back would bring the unti back to working state. Now, the device is not powering up at all. It has been only 60 days. I am going to go through the hell now to get this unit fixed. I am not recommending anyone buying this peice of junk. I believe that if you use the navigator just for GPS purpose, then it would work fine. But, if you wanted to use any of the so called advanced features, then you will run into unsurmoutable issues. Just DON'T BUY IT. It's not worth the pain.

The GO 910 is amazing- it seems to operate perfectly. However, it's hard to discern the performance, as the documentation is, to be charitable, sorely lacking. It is also next to impossible to get in touch with anyone at TomTom by telephone.

The TomTom Home software caused serious problems on my MacIntosh, and I had to remove it. In addition to a serious conflict with iTunes, the program insisted on opening at every startup, and this could not be corrected with preferences.

In short, what seems to be an excellent product is hampered by lousy support.

I have been using this device for 2 nearly 2 months now and have travelled accross several states. This is a "no brainer" and gives you a secure & relax driving. I also travelled to Europe (Brussels, Toulouse, French Riviera and places in the middle of nowhere...) My Tom Tom got me there. I just had to select a European MAP and wait for the satellites to locate me. Just wished the satellites could find me faster. It takes approx. 20 mins before you can start driving! Else this is really worth the expense!

Bought for trip to Ireland. Tom Tom web site says "Complete coverage" of Europe. As soon as we got off a major highway there was no map coverage, that's when you need the gps/map coverage most! Called Tom Tom on return she said I was lucky! to have any coverage at all in Ireland since they only cover northern Ireland. Must be a UK company. The words complete coverage should be removed from the product description. They should consider a better customer support poloicy especially when a brand new customer calls in unstatisfied.

With in 1.5 months one of the 910's took a crap. I contacted the company and they replaced it w/ a refurb...about a month later the replacement took a crap again, they replaced it w/ another refurb...two months later that one took a $h!t, I spoke to them again and demanded a brand new unit; I was promised a new one but when I recieved the package it was another refurb; I called them and was told that there was nothing that they can do...Guess what??? That one crapped out: again demanded a new one and was told that they can't promise that they will send a new unit...got a refurb...Do your self a favor and stay away from tom tom.....

While the hardware itself seems to be OK, (hard to tell though, I've spent so much time try to install the maps)
the process of getting the maps to the TomTom seems to be a throwback to 1995. Since the included SD card is to small to handle the maps I wanted, I got a larger card. For some reason the maps on the updated CD couldn't
be processed. You had to go online to get an activation code for each state. After getting that code I then got
an "invalid activation code" message. Screwing around with this mess isn't worth it.
Additionally, after getting the newer 910 (mine was stolen) I found nothing was compatible. Not the purchased
maps or connectors. You guessed it, not even the external antenna.
All in all it has been a very unpleasant experience.

I bought the Garmin 2720 after returning my Tom Tom 910 in the year 2006.
This should serve as a caution to most new buyers

It has very old set of maps.. maps that maybe date back to the year 2001.
I stay in central new jersey and there has been a lot of new construction around but the maps dont reflect those

I would believe that the latest update is available for download on their website and it costs about $75. but i think this is a rip off because if you buy this product in 2006 then you should get the latest maps with it

Otherwise the product is good.
I would prefer a faster startup time.
Takes some time to get the satellite connection as does the Tom Tom 910

It work great and very easy to use, I never own any GPS before as soon as I turn it on I know how to use it right away. Unfortunately it only works well for 20 minutes before the software lockup and can not startup any more. I called the tech support and they told me to return it without bothering to help me at all.
br /
br /I don't think this is just an unfortunate that I got the unit that only work for a while. It looks very much like they have problem with the hardware circuit design and the compatibility with the software. The unit does not have the consistency turning on; some time push on the switch a little bit it on some time twice or more and timing also different too. This indicates the unpredictable of the circuit design due to micro processor start at the same state during startup. In time the unit may not be able to turn on at all and some units might have problem at the beginning. (Marginal circuit design)
br /
br /Since it has problem turning on therefore turning off would also be the problem and it most likely happen more than turning on due to the software need to comeback at certain state before it turns off and try to control the unreliable circuit causes the unit to lockup.
br /
br /No factory reset, this feature is a very important feature for any equipment that allows people to make change to it. Without this feature it looks very much like a throw away unit.
br /
br /I really like the menu, and easy to use but with these problems. I had been forced to buy Garmin. Garmin is not as nice and less features but it got the most important feature "it works much more reliably".

br /This thing was junk, and there is no way I would by another Tom Tom, and after signing on to Tom Tom for possible updates and such, I now get TONS OF JUNK E-MAIL from everyone.

I purchased a TomTom Go 910 on a recent business trip. I was lost, I'd been thinking of buying one and there was an electronics house close by. I ducked in, and upon learning a bit about the 910 went with one. Now at this stage it's important to take a look at the entire TomTom product line. There are many similar devices that range in price greatly. The physical units look identical, you are simply paying for feature sets. The most important feature on the 910 at the price point, is real time traffic warnings. Real time traffic is a popular feature finding it's way into most GPS manufacturers products nowadays, and each manufacturer goes about it in totally different ways. This was a lesson I learned the hard way.

TomTom's Real Time Traffic is obtained via your Bluetooth phone. But the fine print, which TomTom hides and doesn't really even provide in any of the pre-sales literature or packaging that I could find, is that this feature only works on SOME providers (not Sprint/nextel) and only when you have a wireless data package and connection. This is impractical I think. Even on phones TomTom supports I've had issues obtaining wireless data links when traveling outside my home network cell... Anyhoo, it becomes very important to CALL TOMTOM and verify your provider AND phone will work, and even then I'd suggest buying it from a reseller with a no-hassle return policy.
The TomTom 910's basic navigation features (all available in other TOMTOM models costing hundreds less) are pretty nice. The 3d view of the road is very nice and the perspective is more intuitive while driving. POI data is nice as well. You're not going to be able to find the closest japanesse steakhouse or detailed category searches but it works in a pinch. Plotting the course is about what you'd expect from a GPS and I had no complaints. Text-to-speech is accurate and very configurable, I personally had Mr. T yelling "Make a Leff Turn Fool !".

My biggest shocker, and what eventually led me to return the device for my money back, was when I docked the device to my Laptop... (my business laptop at that). . . .

My profession is that of an IT security professional. I work for the largest AntiVirus software manufacturer on the planet. We tend to take viruses VERY seriously. The second I plugged the TomTom 910 into it's docking station and USB discovered the device all hell broke loose.
Multiple virus warnings popped up, and I was informed that the GPS device itself was attempting to launch and install multiple Trojan Horse applications on/to my laptop. This action was promptly blocked and rectified rather easily but only because my definitions are up-to-the-minute at all times. From what I see on a day to day basis this puts me in the minority.
The infected GPS unit was impossible for me to backup from that point on because every time the backup tried to access the file on the TomTom, AV would balk, and it would crash the TomTom software. A long drawn out, and very evasive call to tech support left me with a real bad taste in my mouth.
TomTom's support and external documentation via the web really tries to play this infection down, saying the trojan is a minor threat, and making all attempts to sweep it under the rug. In my experience companies with slipshod support, and no concept of secure businnes processes aren't around long. I have a Nuvi 660 now... much more reliable, better features, and Garmin seems to have the basics of doing business in the 21st century down pat.

Good Luck !

Great GPS, but we had serious power issues.

When we bought it the first time, we walked outside and played with it for a while and it worked fine. We then took it in and put it on the charger overnight. In the morning, it wouldn't turn on. We took it back to the store and the techs couldn't get it to turn on, so they gave us a new one. This second one lasted about 2 weeks.

We took a long trip away from home relying on the GPS, which got us there perfectly. I turned the GPS off, made sure it was unplugged, and left the car. A few hours later when we got back in to go home it wouldn't turn on again. When we plugged in the charger the green light would come on, but the unit wouldn't turn on. We had to call friends for directions back.

We took that one back to the store, but they wouldn't give us our money back, only a new replacement unit. We begrudgingly took it and used it for two days before it suddenly wouldn't turn on again. Finally the store agreed to give us a different one, and we got a Garmin Nuvi 350, which has worked great. It's the same price but smaller and the window mount is WAY better. Doesn't have bluetooth though or anywhere near the hard-drive space.

I wish the TomTom would have worked, because we really liked it.

Incl maps for both Europe and America. It has 20 GB harddrive and plays mp3, picture and so on. It has bluetooth and it is rock solid. POI with telephone number, support plenty of language. This is the best GPS that you can buy (at the moment). I have had tomtom navigation 5, and this TomTom GO 910 is even better.

I bought this in June of 2007 and had to exchange it the very next day because when I tried to do an online update it froze up and was never able to reboot again even after hitting the reset button. So I got my replacement, skipped the risk of doing the online update, and drove across the USA from California to Vermont with it working just fine, in fact it worked fine for the entire month I used it. HOWEVER, at the beginning of August I drove back across the USA and when I hit the Chicago area the screen began to act defectively. Now if I run the Tom Tom long enough for it to warm up slightly the screen goes wacky and I am barely able to read it. Best Buy refused to exchange it and Tom Tom customer service was impossible to get in touch with. To this day I have yet to hear back from them except for last week when their marketing department called to ask if I would do a customer survey. if you ask me, $500.00 is a lot of money to spend on something that only works a month. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Got the Tom Tom on the recommendation from a friend (a techie!). I was originally thinking of a Garmin. The Europe map feature on the GO 910 was attractive. I was very disappointed with the 910 in the first few days. I set up the GPS to give me directions to my car dealer (I know very well how to get there from my home) just to test it. I blindly followed its instructions (even though it was a bit different from what I would have done normally) and it got me completely lost (it was within a few blocks), but if I was really new to the place and completely relied onthe GPS (which is what I expect from these products) I would have been completely LOST. Since then my experience has been better and I guess only time will tell..........

AMAZING! FANTASTIC! SUPERB!

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about my ability to make this gadget work for me. It was actually VERY simple to figure out, I was exploring uncharted territories in no time! I am a little saddened at the prospect of future generations not knowing how to navigate using real maps. Oh well, let the dumbing down begin!

Looks and functions really well until the mount sporadically fails to connect / charge the unit.

The connections are on the mount and the unit to mount connections are awful.

There are much better GPS on the market - I went with the Garmin 2820 unit after a month of conversations with TomTom. Talk about BAD service and support - save yourself A Lot of trouble.

US Maps woefully out of date with no updates forthcoming. They get all the interstates right....Secondary? HaHa....
When they have updates, you get to buy them, then you find out what's on them. No way to tell ahead of time....be careful.....be very careful...
The routing leaves a lot to be desired as well. Unit tends to favor main roads which are not always the "shortest" or the "fastest" route.

Most of my problems with the 910 are the same as all electronics--I'm way too old to be able to understand it. Specifically, there is little instruction included and technical support takes anywhere from a half hour to hour to get hold of. This even applies to buying an accessory that I misplaced (I finally bought it from another company). Most problems can be solved by hitting the tiny reset button--no easy chore for me, given eyesight and manual dexterity. Once working, I love it. The screen is a lot easier to read than my palm pilot navigator and rural addresses are more likely to be found. It's a good buy, especially if you have a two-year-old around to help you understand it.

The TomTom Navigator is great. My wife often has to travel by herself, and the TomTom Navigator never fails to get her to her destination easily and safely. She absolutely loves it.

First attempt to deliver this product failed or was simply lost in the process. Second unit was delivered 1 week later and it wasn't working at all. Only reset button could unfreeze the screen, but it would be freeze again, again and again. Send it back for refund.

This is probably one of the finest units on the market today. That said it has serious problems with freezing up and the instruction manuals that come with the unit are worthless at best! If you are into GPS as I am, it is a unit that you want to love but just have mixed feelings in that the it has some really bothersome problems.

TomTom worked great the first day, then shut off when I needed it the next.
I returned it and bought a Garmin nuvi 660. A lot more money for the same
features (except european maps) but it works. It's also much thinner and easier to program.

The go looks good, but the maps just don't deliver compared to Garmin. The Garmin Nuvi fits right in your pocket. The Go 910 just doesn't fit, and it weighs too much to carry in your shirt anyways. The maps are out of date and the POI are also out of date.
