We got this for a trip to Tuscany in Italy and were hoping it would be helpful in restaurants when they don't have english menus. Almost none of the words in any menu were in the guide, including ones for beef, chicken, pork etc. It is not a very good dictionary.

It is good but not as convenient as I thought it would be. It takes a bit long to look up and use the language translator. The preset phrases are a lame.

The full sized chip is just an adapter

I reviewed this item on 3/1 and gave it one star because I had gotten two copies of it and both were duds. I got the third one today and called garmin before trying to install it. Here's what I found out. The manufacterer in Taiwan recently changed the product, and the tech support people just realized it a day or two ago, having been bombarded with phone calls. There is a full sized chip and a microchip for different products. Previously, both had the data. Now, the full size chip is nothing but an adapter. You slide the microchip into a slot on the big one, and then put it into the SD slot. It loaded fine, and my wife is pleased. Avoid tearing your hair out.

Purchased the Language translator 2 weeks ago, installed it and it worked perfectly... integrated fine ($67.00).
br /
br /Purchased the POI for Europe (This product) last week. I expected the same level of integration and use, but found that a bit lacking.
br /
br /I have tried to use it about 4 or 5 times but became frustrated as it does not seem to "integrate" with the existing Garmin POI in the unit.
br /
br /To access the ($127.00) European POI, I think, but am not yet sure that you may have to go to a function or menu option for the POI, and search it manually based on the name of the business, restaurant or location.
br /
br /If this is the case, it is NOT recommended. If the POI are not placed ON the map in the device, and all you have is an alphabetical listing that you search AFTER you find a POI that you want data on ... well then this is definately not worth what I paid for it.
br /
br /I thought that the software (which loads automatically into the Garmin Nuvi when you insert the card and turn it on), would interface directly into the system. I thought that when you are displaying a European map, the additional POI, along with pertinant data on the POI woild automatically show up on the map in ADDITION to the existing POI that comes pre-installed with the map.
br /
br /As there are NO instructions on the card, or in the system for using the European POI, I am at a loss as to how it works until I have the time to spend with it understanding how it interfaces.
br /
br /This is not good, there is no intuitiveness built into this particular Garmin software, and it is confusing as to how it can cost so much, and yet seem to deliver so little.

I DIDN'T FIND THE TRANSLATOR THAT EASY TO USE FOR ENGLISH TO GERMAN. THE PHRASES WHERE NOT THAT HELPFUL AND THE GERMAN VOICE WAS NOT THAT CLEAR, HAD TO LISTEN A COUPLE OF TIMES TO GET IT...... HAVING SAID ALL THAT IT WAS GREAT TO HAVE THE TRANSLATOR IN MY GPS (670)DIDN'T HAVE TO LOOK FOR 2 DIFFERENT THINGS. FOR THE PRICE IT IS A GOOD DEAL, I WOULD STILL BUY IT.

We purchased this product with hopes that it would help us on our trip to Paris. The product was easily installed and intuitive. We familiarized ourselves with it before our trip and felt comfortable with its use and functionality. The problem with the Garmin Language Guide is the listing of words was extremely limited and the phrases are not ones we found any use for. I realized that my two years of very rusty high school French from 30 years ago and the ability of most everyone in Paris to speak at least a limited amount of English more than adequate for us to maneuver this large European city. Perhaps if we were in a more rural area where fewer people understood English this tool would have been more useful. After the first few attempts of trying to obtain some utility out of the Language Guide we never used it again.

One Way Translations are useless

Of what good is a translator when you can't understand the response; i.e the fact that the Nuvi translates your questions into a European language (in this case German) is of little use when the respondent answers in German. What's needed is a reverse translator that allows the native speaker to either select an appropriate response or type it in (assuming they have the patience to do so and do not misspell words). There are many interactive translators on the market but unfortunately, because of the memory required; they're all computer based. This is especially significant because languages like French and Especially German are often so grammatically different and because of that the English translations are often confusing.

Garmin language guide was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! It comes with zero installation instructions. Inserted the chip into a Nuvi 660 and nothing happened. Technical support email link does not work. Tried calling and the recording said there was a 32 minute wait. Not wanting to use up cell phone minutes, I hung up. Then I returned the product for a refund. Will revert to my Franklin Spanish/English translator. Although not a particularly sophisticated device, it does work!

Looks good so far. Haven't used it overseas yet.

One nice unadvertised feature of this product is that the data and program completely load into the GPS (Nuvi 670 in my case). So the chip can be removed and the SD card slot can be used for other things. Also, phrases in the oher language are spoken for help with pronunciation. Or you could just let your Nuvi do the talking for you. Overall usefulness in a foreign country remains to be seen.

This is great when you are traveling to more than one country. You don't need to bring multiple copies of dictionaries. Also, the translation of the phrases are useful!
