br /A friend of mine bought this GPS receiver, and we set it up together. The TomTom ONE is remarkably user-friendly, extremely easy to set up, and intuitive to operate.
br /
br /The screen features a nice "driving view" that was unavailable in GPS systems at the time I bought my GPS; this view is more 3D, very easy to read and quite appealing. For the price, it seems to be an incredible value.
br /
br /The TomTom ONE kit comes with a USB cable that hooks up to your computer and a CD that can be used to manage it over the computer, giving greater flexibility in management. My old GPS can only be managed from the console in my car.
br /
br /Seeing the capabilities of this portable GPS system, I wished I would have not had a different GPS installed in my vehicle, but instead purchased this unit. The TomTom ONE can be transported and used in rental cars on trips, or in friends' cars, and there are no worries about it being stolen, as it is small enough to stow away in your purse. Versatile, easy to use, inexpensive---what more could you want in an entry-level GPS?

EXCELLENT navigator.I bought this item after reading about it in Consumer Reports magazine. They rated it as a "Best Buy." Well, I found it refurbished at Amazon for $179.99, which included free shipping. So far, so good! It is "idiot proof" as far as programming. It gets me where I'm going with a built-in speaker which calls out audible directions as you drive. "At the end of the road, turn right" for example. It will also give you advanced warning of an exit, such as "Exit right in 2 miles." I purposely have driven in the wrong direction to check how well it calculates a new course. It hasn't disappointed me yet. Within seconds it gives you a new verbal command along with a corrected course on its screen. If you choose to ignore it's verbal directions (which I have)and go your own way, it will eventually see it your way and recalculate your route. I highly recommend this GPS.

The Good
br /* Many options to configure
br /- - voices and accents
br /- - day and night colors
br /- - points of interest (POI) can be added manually or by downloading them
br /- - avoid toll roads and constructions
br /* On local roads, it tells you that there is a R/L turn ahead in 1 mile. On interstate highways, it notifies you in 2 miles.
br /* It's very accurate in determining your current location.
br /* Online updates and free POI are available.
br /* The status bar can be configured to display the direction, compass, speed, time of arrival and distance left to travel.
br /* It allows an itinerary and can assign addresses as waypoint (places to pass) or destination (places to stop).
br /* A planned route can be animated from start to finish.
br /* The screen is very readable. I had the sun from all directions and I had no trouble reading it. I had my brightness set to default (80% brightness)
br /* The volume level is good. I don't have a quiet car, was traveling at 70mph and had the radio on (mid volume) and I could still hear the instructions well at 90% volume.
br /* When making a turn, the map zooms in allowing you to get a better view of the road divisions.
br /* A 4-digit pin can be assigned, preventing thieves from using it. (see problems below)
br /
br /The Bad
br /* No AC charger, you'll have to use the USB cable and connect it to you PC or use the car charger cable.
br /* No dashboard mount, only a windshield cup is included.
br /* No external volume control, it has to be done via the screen. When adjusting the volume, the unit will repeat the last instruction so that you can determine if the level is OK. This can be confusing. For example, when I adjusted the volume it said "Right turn ahead". My next turn at that time was 170 miles away. I think it's better if it should say something like "Volume adjusted."
br /* The only way to set a 4-digit pin/password is through the TomTom Home program that you must install. I encountered a problem with this process though it could be due to my defective unit.
br /* If you have entered an invalid 4-digit pin, the unit does not notify you, it simply won't proceed to the screen and waits until you enter the right pin.
br /* The list of Favorites is deep down in the Preferences menu. I think this should be more easily accessible.
br /* I suspect that the number of points of interest (POI) is not a lot compared to other gps navigators. When driving on I80 from Iowa to Chicago I have not seen single rest area marked as such even though I have configured the settings to show those POIs. A lot of gas stations and huge name shopping centers are also missing.
br /* No printed manual. The .PDF files are in the CD. Saves trees though.
br /* There is a feature that allows you to view a map. You can also drag a map (using your fingers of course) when browsing it so that you can view the hidden areas. When I first started doing this, the unit restarted. In subsequent uses, it would take me to the other menus. It's very hard to use and I think it's better if they have provided a scroll bar.
br /
br /The Ugly. I am hoping that the following are not typical of TomTom One and I just experienced them since I got a refurbished unit that was not properly fixed - refurbished units are supposed to be like brand new.
br /* When I used the TomTom Home program to set my pin, I had to go through the configuration questions even though I have done this previously in the unit. When I get to the step that selects a map, I was asked for an activation code. To do this I was asked to provide the DEVICE code and PRODUCT code online to get the ACTIVATION code. When I used the activation code, it did not work. Then I tried to use the unit and I had to go through the configuration questions again. Very annoying.
br /* While navigating, the unit restarted/rebooted several times and I could not get it to navigate again. I had to drive to an area with a satellite signal for it to work again.
br /* It gave me a message "Error during planning..." while trying to set my 700-mile destination. I got around this by breaking my travel into several segments since I suspected that it was having some memory issues and could not compute long distances.
br /* The screen has some physical problem. I noticed the same problem with other units. The top right and left area seems to be lose. It can be pressed and it makes a ticking sound.
br /* The unit is not as responsive as Garmin C330 that I tested. After tapping on a button I find that I have to wait for 1 second or press it again. Use your nails to tap the screen gently.
br /
br /Other info
br /* During navigation, the screen has its default map size. You can zoom in and out but it will go back to the default size (in less than a minute I guess)
br /* It could not find an address in Texas that has been there for 3 years but it found my place with was built 2 years ago. I believe that other systems have similar issues.
br /
br /Update
br /* I returned the unit and Amazon sent me a new one. I have not tested it in the same way that I tested the previous one but this is more responsive.
br /
br /Reminders
br /* Never rely on your GPS navigator, always have a backup map. If it stops working for whatever reason, you'll be spending hours finding your way.
br /* Don't leave your unit or the hold on your windshield when parking your car. This is a magnet for low life thieves. Bring them with you or at least put the unit and the holder in your car's compartment.
br /
br /Conclusion:
br /* Despite its flaws, this is an adequate unit for navigation for me. **** 4 stars.
br /
br /I hope this helps.

Don't get me wrong. I do love TomTom One. All of my friends use TomTom. I just cannot believe TomTom showed such little care in their refurbished items. When the refurbished TomTom One arrived, it didn't work right out of box. I typed the zipcode when I live, but it returned the wrong city in the wrong state. Sure I got refund from Amazon, but it's really a bummer to receive a refurbished item that were broken so obviously. And I'm not alone. Feel free to read other reviews on this refurbished item. They had bad experiences, too.

The Tom Tom does what is says it will and does it with gusto. It includes, 3d graphics, points of interest that can be downloaded, many downloadable voices and map sets, it has bluetooth traffic updates, but that feature comes at great cost to the average buyer who has to sign up for two programs, one with your cellular provider and one with TomTom to use it. No scratches, dents or defects...like new.
br /I would have scored it a five but the "Free" promotions and downloads were all expired by the time I received the unit. Paying for use of the features turns me off some. Otherwise a great unit at a great price.

I purchased a Tom Tom One that was refurbished. While I had concerns about buying something that had been refurbished, I was quite pleased when I opened the box as the unit looked brand new. I've had it for over a month with absolutely no problems. Considering the fact that updated maps are expensive and that all these GPSs will be obsolete is another year or two, why pay more?
Great pickup, I will never get lost again.

Several friends and my brother own the TomTom One unit and are very pleased. I already had a Pioneer unit for my SUV but am slightly disappointed with the inability to search for a POI by POI Name (only by category). I found the TomTom One refurbished on Amazon for an awesome price; this was too good to pass up. The unit came in new condition and is performing quite well. Very satisfied with the purchase. This unit has GPS and nearly every great feature of units twice the price yet performs as well or better. You can't go wrong.

This GPS unit works fairly well if plugged into power, but it has unacceptable battery life. I charged the battery overnight twice but it still only holds a charge for about 10 minutes. The GPS functions are good, not great. If you don't arrive at your programmed destination, you are constantly alerted to keep moving unless you program a new destination. To end a destination early, you have to go several screens into the interface - very inconvenient. I ended turning off the voice directions most of the time. I bought a refurbished unit, and I have read several negative reviews of model One refurbs since, so I suspect Tomtom dumps their inferior refurbished products back on the market. Very disappointing. I will avoid refurbs and Tomtoms from now on.

This unit is a great little GPS. I would rate it higher except for the suction mount for the windshield. The unit itself picks up the satellite signals well and calculates position very fast. The touch screen menus are very intuitive and user friendly. The suction mount...well...sucks. It does not stick very well to windshields and tends to release at the most inopportune times. The computer support prograsm works very well especially with the new downloadable upgrade. The only problem I have with the software is probably a user issue -- I can't seem to get it to use country roads in deference to The larger highways like scenic or "avoid highway" routes on other competitive models. I end up using the "via" setting to trick it into using the rural roads.

This was my 1st GPS navigator. I was a little hesitant about buying a refurbished unit but when the unit arrived it was exactally as brand new.
br /I let my wife use the navigator the day after I received it and it worked perfectly for her and she said it was simple to use (this from a woman who has trouble setting the clock on a VCR). All in all I am very happy with the purchase

I got this refurbished product which looks absolutely new, it came as if it was a new item with a sealed and packed new items. It said refurbished on the pack inside but it was new.
br /About the Product - It is an excellent prodect, just started to work as soon as it was out of the box not initial charging and all that bull.
br /It was very easy to set up as it has a finer touch screen (No need for a stylus that gets lost). with easy step by step set up within 5 mins.
br /Love the clarity of the voice and also the precisess and exact location finder. this prodect is up there, (i dont think that one needs to buy the more expensive ones it is more than enough)one doese not use all the features in this itself.
br /It is easily mountable without effort and easy to carry when you step out of your car.
br /About the Seller - this was a no hassel buying experience from this seller he is excellent, said i would get this product in 2-3 weeks (because i opted for the free shipping) but the product arrived within a week well packed, I recomend this seller to all.
br /Drawbacks of TOM YOM One - there is only one drawback, if some one is trying to read the directions on the gadget that person has to really look carefully as they are really small in the top right corner and below. (but for people without the hearing problem they really dont need to see it because this GPS is really interactive and keeps prompting you ahead of time what to do).

drove local with it... great unit. BUT BEWARE first impressions can be deciving.
br /
br /took this with me to a trip to new york two days after... planned the trip fine, but then tried to view it as step-by-step images and the unit kept freezing. hmm.. ok clearly something is wrong with this.
br /
br /shrugged that first defect off and went with it anyway. it was great until it locked up when i literally got to new york (the place where i needed it). unit kept rebooting, freezing, etc. eg. it became a brick.
br /
br /it was as if the unit kept running out of memory or something. talk about bad coding. (had the latest updates too). highly doubt this is a refurb defect too...
br /
br /this is definitley going back for good. goodbye tomtom brand! time to check out garmin.

TomTom One is an absolute delight to use in the Northwest area. Its fast, accurate, very easy to setup, and intuitive to use. But, I had to return the first two units to get one that worked. Despite the issues noted below, I would buy a TomTom again. They are really very good at what they do when they work.
br /
br /The first one locked up. After two hours of online trouble shooting, TomTom sent a replacement. This one worked but had to be reset after each use or it would not start. More online troubleshooting, and finally a replacement that worked.

br /My online search indicates that about 15% of users experience the lockups and reset problem, even on new units. One gets the impression that failed units are being recycled with little or poor refurbishing. (Perhaps their repair work is outsourced?)
br /
br /Very well trained friendly online support, but other than reloading faulty software, there is little they can do but authorize a replacement.
br /
br /If all you want or need is a simple to use get from here to there navigation without add-on frills and entertainment, you will love the TomTom One. It makes for a fun trip.
br /
br /However, be prepared for frustration with refurbished units. It would be smarter and much less frustrating and very worthwhile to search for a new unit at discount.

This is an awesome GPS device. It is very easy to use and offers alternatives when asked for. The many options incuding language, alternative routes, avoiding tolls, points of interest really makes getting around so easy. This is my second tom-tom; my first was stolen! So, be careful and don't leave it in your car!

Wow... I've never had a problem with directions. Unfamiliar places usually required a Google map and that was it. When I ordered the TomTom One it was after a long wait. Did I really need a GPS? The answer is a wholehearted YES! It simply works great. On a recent trip to NV, I loaded in the addresses to all the places I knew I was going. When I got off the plane and into the car, I tapped a few buttons and I was on my way. The best part about owning one of these is that directions are now a no-brianer. You can focus on driving. The safety level is much better than fumbling with and viewing a paper map. Quick glances, or just listening to the spoken directions, lets you keep your eyes on the road more. When you get to one destination, a few more taps and you're on your way to the next place. You can store tons of "Favorites" and even connect to your computer (cable not included) to plan and transfer sophisticated routes with many along-the-way stops. (People in sales, are you paying attention?) Programming an address is easy. Zip code first, street name and then address number. TomTom usually has the name you are looking for within the first three characters. Route calculation is fast. Get off track - no problem. It takes about 4-5 seconds to recaclulate and commence with the updated route. And, it doesn't call you 'dummy' for going off course. In fact, you'll find yourself confidently taking a different-than-calculated route just to have it get you back in the right direction. It sounds silly, but actually it gives you confidence to explore other places or routes you might not have. The maps are accurate, detailed and the same as the more expensive TomTom units. Dirt roads, center medians - all of the little details that you wouldn't expect are there.

br /Don't let a refurbished unit make you hesitant about saving some $$$. Everything in the box looks (and smells) factory new. If the box didn't have a label indicating 'factory reconditioned', I never would have known. And I'm a technogeek. The warranty is 1 year - same as a new unit. And TomTom support is fast, knowledgeable and very friendly (I called with questions about future map updates). Run the thing often for the first few months to ferret out any problems. The suction cup mount is sturdy and stays very secure to the windshield. I like mine in the lower left hand corner just above the dash, not blocking any of my field of vision. Don't bother with the expensive home charger. The included USB cable charges the battery when connected to your computer. You can buy a USB to 120VAC adaptor for about $6. Or, use the car adaptor. Also, run the unit on the battery frequently and plug-in when the battery low indicator comes on. A friend trashed his battery by leaving it plugged into the car adaptor all the time.
br /
br /So are there any negatives? I guess that a bigger screen would be nice, but I could have that for about $150 more with the XL version. A bigger screen would mean a bigger touch keyboard for my fingers. And it'd be really nice if the unit would turn on and off with the car when plugged in to the car charger.
br /
br /So, if you have been thinking about a portable GPS, I can highly recommend the TomTom One. It works great, the price is right, and it's just plain fun. Are there 'better' units out there? Maybe. But not at this price!

I bought mine retail before X-Mas, so this is not a refurb review, but as far as the unit goes, it's great!

br /I have been using it regularly in Texas since purchase and it has always given 100% accurate directions. Easy to use, love the voice navigation and the screen is easy to see in any light (including bright sunlight).
br /
br /We took it on the first big family trip last week and it performed like a champ. Took me straigt to every door we asked it to. We had paper directions as a backup but never had to pull them out.
br /
br /I have never used the traffic on it, but for navigation it's a winner in my book!

Greay Portable GPS for the Price!

br /This is one of the most featured-packed portable GPS system one can get for under $200.00. I did a lot of research and decided to buy a used or refurbished One rather than get the 3rd edition which lacks a lot of features like advanced trip planning and multiple via points. I have only been using my refurbished TOM TOM One for a week but so far so good. I highly recommend it for someone who wants a simple GPS with some advanced features that may come in handy for long road trips. It is definitely a better bargain than the Garmin Nuvi 200 or Maegellal Maestro. If you can't find a used/refurbished TomTom One or One (LE), go for the Tom Tom One XL. It is the same exact device but with a wide screen. My one complaint is that the suction cup mount arm is too short. When mounted, it is quite a stretch for me to interact with the device. I think I will have to buy a ProClip mount for it and my Jetta.

I ordered a NEW TomTom One GPS from Amazon on October 2, 2007. I was sent a refurbished unit. I emailed Amazon 4 times starting October 3 to resolve the issue and had one "I am sorry" reply. I called and was told nothing can be done on the phone. I wrote a letter to Amazon on October 8, 2007 with copies of their ad advertising a new unit. It is now November 4, 2007 and I have had no reply of any type. The unit was charged to my card within within 8 hours of the order.
br /
br /I have a unit I can not review because I can not open the box without losing my ability to be able to return the GPS. I have no GPS that I can use and my money is gone.
br /
br /Amazon has made no attempt to reply to me in a month. No real service available. Careful what you buy - they do not reply.
br /
br /NO REAL REVIEW OF THE UNIT AFTER A MONTH AS I CAN NOT USE THE UNIT UNTIL THIS DISPUTE IS RESOLVED.

I never received the product but was billed for it, when I called about it they said it was no longer available but when I checked it was for $40 more. The order was cancelled but they could have honored the price I ordered it for. Thanks.
