Update (5/27/08): The thing is dying. It just blanks out, sometimes at the most inoportune times. It has (thus far) always come back but then you have to reset it etc. etc. I'm beginning to understand why it was sent back initially...
br /
br /Update: Probably everyone who uses this will figure it out... but it does have a quirk - a right turn from a turn only lane (i.e. with an island) will be indicated with a "keep right" direction rather than a "turn right" direction. Left turns are indicated properly, but right turns are mixed... it's a handy thing to know when you're in traffic and don't know if you should be in the turn lane :o)
br /
br /This is a fabulous little GPS unit. For the price you absolutely can't beat it. I had a better model and it was stolen... so I got this at a very low price to replace it... it is JUST as easy to use, very intuitive. The black and white (and gray :) is still just as easy to see relatively speaking... besides, I really just listen to it... and every so often refer to the screen. It seems to have a little more trouble with exact store/office locations... left or right side of the street kind of things, but no big deal.
br /
br /As other reviewers have noted, you do have to load the maps from the disk... it has a smaller memory and therefore doesn't come preloaded. However you can get quite a bit on there for all of that... I got the midwest and east coast on with room to spare... it does mean that it's not plug and play though. The directions to load the information were easy to follow and it took maybe ten minutes in total.
br /
br /It is the same as the other unit in its time required to "acquire satellites" which is about five minutes when you first get outside... if you use it to find buildings for say doctors' appointments, meetings, interviews, that kind of stuff be sure to add five minutes to set it up and figure out where you're going. The re-direct when you take a wrong turn is still very short - maybe 20-30 seconds... it's just that initial reading... might be because I am always inside too (parking garages)... so it has to find the satellites every time I turn it on.
br /
br /Again, while some of that might be considered drawbacks, considering this unit is about 1/3 the price of even the lower end models, it can hardly be expected that the functionality is entirely the same.
br /
br /If you are directionally/geographically challenged this is an absolutely GREAT little device for a very very little bit of money relatively speaking.

Got this as a gift, and in my travels around the eastern United States, it does a good job. Who needs color? You're usually not looking at it!
br /It's voice is telling you where to go, and if you need to look at it, well, are books in color? Good unit. It's my second Garmin, and I like them! For first-time GPS users, you'll like this unit. It's really pretty easy to use, and portable to boot.
