But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? I gave the Garmin Nuvi 880 4 stars because, for me, it really does what I want and need. I have run into a few minor glitches that are NOT the 880's problem, but a Garmin issue.
br /
br /First, the pros:
br /
br /1. It gets me just about anywhere I want to go. Look, I don't care if I know a shortcut, but the Nuvi 880 doesn't. I really don't need it when navigating to places I am familiar with. But, in unfamiliar places it does a real nice job of getting me to my destination.
br /
br /2. The voice activated system is great. I have used it for around a month now, and I am having few problems with it.
br /
br /3. The MSN Direct has really been a nice feature. On trips to the Los Angeles area and Las Vegas it "kicked in" automatically to warn us of severe traffic situations ahead, and closed roads. I have used it to find movies and show times, as well as weather reports.
br /
br /4. I am hard of hearing and use hearing aids, so I like using the connection from the Nuvi to my AUX port on my radio. I can easily hear everything the Nuvi is telling me.
br /
br /5. I used it in pedestrian mode once. It worked really well. I bought a fanny pack to take it with me when I leave the car. However, it actually fits in the pocket of cargo pants.
br /
br /6. I use the bluetooth feature all the time. It was absolutely no effort to sync with my phone.
br /
br /7. On a recent trip I was using the "Where Am I" mode a lot. It has an elevation feature built into it. We were traveling high mountain roads and we used the Nuvi to get the elevation. It was all in fun.
br /
br /Now, the Cons:
br /
br /1A. I don't know why Garmin leaves every house on my street off it's maps. The street AND street name appear, BUT try putting in an address of any house on my street, and it chooses another street in the neighborhood instead. My wife has had a Garmin 300 series for a couple of years and has the same problem. She tried updating the software, but nothing changes. How many other locations are missing?
br /
br /1B. Just for fun I was going to navigate to our Credit Union. The Nuvi wanted to send me to where the Credit Union Used to be located. This could be an updating issue, but the Credit Union moved around 4 years ago. This bothers me because I don't know how many potential places I could navigate to are actually in a different location, and have been for years.
br /
br /2. The voice system is great. I have no real issues with it. However, it has a hard time understanding your commands if there is too much noise. Road noise is not the problem. It happens only when others are talking at the same time you are trying to give it commands. Also, my a/c was too loud once.
br /
br /3. The MSN Direct is a nice feature. I would like to see it expanded into more areas. You have to be in the few service areas it has in order to receive the info. However, I know the service areas are expanding all the time. My one "BIG" complaint is the updating of this service. I used it the other day to find a movie and the times it would be playing. I should have called ahead because the movie was NOT playing at the two theaters I went to. This is no big deal because I called a third place I found. I used to Nuvi to give me the theater's phone number!
br /
br /4.I tried using the FM transmitter to have a wireless hookup to my car's radio. I have had no success with it. But, the AUX port works fine.
br /
br /5. As for pedestrian mode! Well, I would like to see some type of mode indicator on the main map. Why? It's no big deal, but I forgot to put the mode back from pedestrian to automobile when we in Las Vegas. On the day we left everything on the Nuvi seemed really messed up. It was telling us we wouldn't get home until some rediculous time, and it would stop telling us as we drove down the road that it was recalculating the route. It thought we were walking home (about 800 miles). My fault, and it will never happen again.
br /
br /6. Bluetooth. My cell phone syncs with the Nuvi 880. But not entirely. The only thing it will let me do is make and receive calls. Not a real problem. However, my wife sync'd her phone up and got just about all of her phone's features such as address book, texting, etc. I don't text, but I would like to use my address book.
br /
br /Not much to complain about. I found the Nuvi 880 to be very useful for me. I don't consider it to be an expensive toy. I really do benefit from the features it has. One more thing to consider:
br /I have recently (Last Year) been diagnosed with an eye condition called Macular Pucker. It does not lead to blindness, but straight lines aren't exactly straight anymore. It could clear itself up on it's own, or maybe surgery is in the future. I can read road signs, menus, and other printed material, but it is frustraing as small print letters can "run" into each other sometimes. The hands frre, voice activated Nuvi 880 allows me to bypass most of the looking at small print and typing in of names and addresses. For this feature alone it was worth every penny.

Have been using this for about a week since the day after it came out. Long time Garmin customer, and have loved the Street Pilot series.
br /Overall this is a great product. The voice recognition is excellent, with almost no errors if the radio is off. I do miss the remote that my street pilot came with, but as I get more used to the VR, I think that will go away.
br /The MSN features are good, with the best one (in my mind) being the ability to send map points directly to your Nuvi without connecting it to your computer. You do this via Live Search maps, not as good as Google maps, but not bad at all. You can move waypoints from Google maps, but you have to physically connect the unit to the computer.
br /Given the price I had hoped the GPS unit would find satellites immediately on starting (like the built in unit in my wife's Honda). However (like the street pilot) it take about 20-30 seconds if the car has been turned off for a while.
br /Mapping software seems great, I haven't gotten any directions that didn't make sense.
br /Did not come with any software for the computer, as the Street Pilots did, which I am somewhat surprised about. Maybe Garmin is phasing out MapSource now that everyone is using Google maps? Not sure.
br /Overall excellent, but then again, given that it is basically the most expensive GPS out there, it should be.
br /If it was even 200 dollars cheaper, I would give it 5 starts, but given the value, I would bump it down to 4.
One of the Best GPS units available today!

I have been using the Nuvi 880 GPS for a couple of weeks now, and it is the best Garmin unit to date, and possibly the portable/handheld/car GPS available at this time. The Garmin Nuvi GPS units are probably the easiest to start using out of the box without reading any manuals.
br /
br /The new line of Nuvi units have done away with the small flip-up antenna, opting for a internal antenna which is much nicer. This GPS is also VERY thin and can be carried in your jeans pocket (front pocket-without the leather case/protector) if you're traveling in another country. Because the 880 has done away with the external antenna, it also maintains the same thin dimensions for the length of the backside of the unit, finally losing that small bulge as on the back of the 670 (and other 600-series) Nuvi units.
br /
br /The speech recognition is about 90% accurate, but this may be due to the higher amount of road noise in my car (and/or the air conditioner fan noise). When it's quiet, however, the voice recognition is surprisingly accurate.
br /
br /The ability to have a user-changeable battery is featured on the 880. I can't tell you how many times I wish I had this feature with our Nuvi 670 on our trip to Italy when we were out all day on foot and the GPS battery became depleted, (though it did last for 5-6 hours). The only thing lacking is that Garmin should sell some sort of external battery charger for the extra batteries rather having to charge them in the unit itself.
br /
br /Another reviewer mentioned that the Garmin doesn't have intelligent street recognition (such as with Google) to ask the user if a different spelling for a street/highway was intended when the unit doesn't return any results with the spelling it was given. This is not true, and perhaps that reviewer should have another read of the documentation to understand this. If you provide a partial text street or highway name to the Garmin it will return a list of possible matches. The Nuvi 880 works slightly different than previous Nuvi models in that the earlier models would provide an "active lookup", listing the possible matches as soon as the user had typed enough characters to determine a match. The 880, however, allows the user to provide (enter) the partial or full street/intersection AND THEN it will display a list of possible matches. This works a little more efficiently than the previous models because it allows the system to do a single fast search, rather than searching after each letter, and it allows the user to correct any typing mistakes before searching on them.
br /
br /Another nice feature of the Garmin unit is that the virtual keyboard for spelling can be QWERTY style now.
br /
br /The built in MP3 player is fun. For example if you have a music (or any MP3) that you want to hear via the car's stereo, you simply tune the FM radio to an unused station and configure the Garmin to output to the FM transmitter. Music and guidance prompts will be played via the car stereo. This is also nice for extremely noisy car environments if the Garmin's (loud) volume isn't enough, then the GPS prompts can be played via the car stereo. Other utilities on the 880 are very helpful, such as the unit and currency converters.
br /
br /I've also tried the TomTom units, which I found to be slower in computing routes, and having far too many user configurable options. If you want to spend hours "customizing" all of the screen colors and every other aspect of your GPS, then maybe a TomTom would be a good choice for you. However, if you want an easy-to-use unit, the Garmin is a better choice.
br /
br /The screen brightness can be set by the user, but 70-80% will suffice in all but the highest glare situations, and the large screen is very clear.
br /
br /With ANY touch-screen device I always recommend purchasing clear screen protector sheets. These clear sheets stick via friction (no residue), and will help to greatly extend the life of your GPS or other product.
br /
br /Lastly, another very nice feature on the 880 is the addition of MSN Direct which I renewed the subscription to a lifetime (guaranteed until 2012) extension for about $120 flat (there are other renewal options available). One of the best features of MSN Direct is updated traffic reports sent to your GPS. Even while not navigating a route, and simply viewing the map, a traffice "incident" icon will show on the display if a traffic event lies ahead in the direction you're traveling in case you want to have your GPS route you around the traffice. MSN Direct also features such things as a little icon for weather warnings on your GPS, full weather for your location, a selection to pop up a quick list of gas prices/station near your location, another selection to pop up a quick list of movie times listed by theater or movie title, news, stocks, local events. It is a very nice feature.
br /
br /All in all this is one of the best portable GPS units available currently.

I recently bought an 880 having using a 660 for the last 1.5 years. I have owned 5 Garmins, 3 Lowrances, a Magellen, and have borrowed several of the latest TomTom's on occassion and I can say that, without a doubt, this is the most complete and easy to use hand held/portable navigator I've ever used. Let me explain....
br /
br /Capability
br /Garmin packs an amazing amount of capability into this device - Routes, amazing POI search capabilities, a HUGE database of POI's, extensive customization options, beautiful, easy to read display, decent battery life for use when walking, an array of charging methods (will even charge via USB from your computer) MSN, and many more. No other portable navigator has the breadth of features of the 880. It's truly the "top of the line". For this I give it a 5+
br /
br /Ease of Use
br /Thte Nuvi OS in general is quite easy to use. It was the first ever GPS navigator that my wife, who is not into gadgets, could use with absolutely no instructions. In fact, it's so easy to use she WANTS to use it. Same goes for my father-in-law who is completely technology challenged. He learned how to use it with only about 5 minutes of basic instruction. As easy to use as it is, you still get access to advanced features and the "ease of use" doesn't get in your way. Once you learn some of the "shortcuts" (like holding down a "back" button to go all the way back to the main menu in one press) it becomes even easier to use. Without a doubt this is the easiest to use of all portable navigators I've used (which is quite a few). I give ease of use a "5".
br /
br /Searching
br /Searching for POI's on the Nuvi continues to be quite good. However, I'd like to see some improvements to the categories. For instance, it's amazing that all Nuvi's don't have a category for RV related POI's like "RV Resorts", "RV supplies", etc. You have to search by spelling for "RV" which also returns things like "Joe's Soft SeRVe Ice Cream". A nice improvement on the 880 is the capability to skip putting in the city when searching for an address. Over all the search functions are the best I've seen on a portable GPS navigator but because there are some small and basic improvements I give searching a 4.5 rather than a 5.
br /
br /Maps
br /The maps are "good enough" for the most part on the 880 and the other Nuiv's however, having used quite a few other navigators I have a few gripes.
br /
br /1. My overall biggest complaint is WHY doesn't Garmin have a more frequent update capability for their maps? They know how to do this stuff because their aviation products have it where you can subscribe to updates every 28 days. Other manufacturers are no better but Garmin has the know how (in partnership with Jeppesen). We should be able to get incremental updates rather than waiting for 1-2 years for a complete map database update. This is a huge issue.
br /
br /2. Accuracy. The maps Garmin uses (which they buy from Navtek) are "acceptable" but in my travels I find annoying errors. For instance, I'm currently staying with my son at a USAF base. The Navtek maps are mostly accurate for the base (missing one of the entry gates) and surrounding areas but when I ask the 880 to take me somewhere off the base it tries to route me straight through a 10 foot tall barbed wire fence rather than through the main gates. This is a map problem not a GPS software problem.
br /
br /3. POI's display. The 880 and the other Nuvi's give you the option of displaying POI's on the map page but they don't show all of them for some reason. This is not a map problem but rather they way Garmin has choosen to display the maps. If I tell it to display all POI's on the map then it should do it.
br /
br /4. Map Detail. My aviation Garmin units have very detailed maps which include lots of detail on unpaved roads and associated POI's and when you use them in automotive mode you get to see this detail. My cheap, difficult to use and unreliable, Lowrance 350 shows a lot of this as well. This is very useful for off-roading. To get this for the Nuvi's you have to buy Garmins Topographical maps.
br /
br /Overall, I give the maps on the 880 (and other Nuvi's) a "4". The maps are probably good enough for 90% of owners but could be improved in my opinion.
br /
br /Voice Recognition
br /To be succinct, the voice recognition is AWESOME. It works incredibly well even in the high noise of my Jeep Wrangle. It is nearly flawless. I'll caution that I do not have any sort of accent though and I have no idea how it behaves if you do not speak "standard" english. Of course it would be great if it was just like "Hal" on 2001 A Space Odessey where you can just talk to it conversationally but that capability is still a few years away because of the computing power required. The 880 only responds to specific commands but it works amazingly well. Give that I understand the state of the technology, the only improvment I'd like to see is the ability to optionally turn off the voice prompting. For example, when you select a POI to navigate to, it takes you to a screen which requires you to say "Yes" to begin navigation but before you can say "Yes" you have to wait for the GPS to say, "Say Yes to navigate to this location" (or something like that). Once you are familiar with the unit you don't need those prompts and you can use it much more quickly without them. Overall, I give the voice recognition a 5 given the current state of technology.
br /
br /Summary
br /The 880 is an AWESOME unit. The initial price is rather high compared to other navigators but it most certainly will come down. I tend to wait for the first price drop on such things these days but I found the 880 so compelling, capable, and desirable I bought it only a few weeks after it was released at only a slight discount and have no remorse. I feel the 880 is the absolute best consumer handheld/portable GPS automotive navigator available today - bar none. I give it a pragmatic and objective 4 only because of the Map issues I noted however I will say you can't do better than the 880 at this point in time and relative to all other units on the market it is definitely a "5+".

I had a Garmin 760, which was fine. The 880 is an even better gadget. But the Nuvi is still no smarter than it was; just more tricks to it. First, the base maps still seem to be at least three years old, even if you buy this year's maps. My iPhone is much more useful in finding places of business than my Nuvi. Second, the Nuvi software does not have any sort of "smart" road name recognition as you type. For example, if the map calls Interstate 35 N IH-35, you had better darn well type it in just like that. This is problematic manly because the nomenclature varies from place to place. For example, I-70 might be W IH-70 in Denver, but "Interstate 70 West" in another town. The Nuvi is not smart enough to give you options. You must go to manual map mode to see how the road is named on the Nuvi, and then try again. Or better yet, plug in your destination via the PC-based mapping software. Go to Google Maps if you want a sample of how this "smart" feature should work.

The Garmin Nuvi 880 is an awesome GPS unit. I've tried many in the past, and nothing comes close to the Garmin 880. Voice recognition works flawlessly. I'm definitely going to keep the MSN Direct subscription after the free 3 month grace period. Never need to touch the screen while driving. Hands-free everything! Directions, iPhone dialing with bluetooth, traffic, weather, restaurants, movie theaters and much more. The price tag puts it at the top of the GPS $$ ladder, but it's worth every penny.

I'm hooked on Nav systems. I really got it for my RAV4 to replace a NUV 660 which I liked very much. I have (had) built-in Navs on several cars. The latest is a Lexus 460L. The Lexus is reported to have one of the very best Nav systems. It is very good. But in many respects, the NUVI 880 is better. The voice recognition is vastly superior. There seems to be more POIs. Destinations to remote areas are superior in the 880.
br /
br /I'm planning a trip to Ohio next week in the Lexus and will be taking the 880 with me and use it in conjunction with the Lexus Nav. For one thing, unlike the Lexus, the 880 will take me to the exact address of an out-of-the-way place. And the other advantage is that the 880 shows the current highway speed limit as well as the current speed of the car--good speed control.
br /
br /And it's great to find the cheapest gas, curent weather, stock quotes, the current news, and 'where am I", with immediate access to police and hospitals.

The Nuvi 880 is the 1st GPS that I have purchased. So please take this review with a grain of salt. I do have a couple of wouldda been nices:
br /
br /*) A pause button - it definitely doesn't like you stopping for gas (but I don't think any of them do)
br /
br /*) From what I'm told the Truck route option is gone. I have an F250 with passenger plates, sometimes I tow a 20' trailer.
br /
br /*) Ability to input by street name "routes to avoid" vs. trying to "click" on the road.
br /
br /*) Takes wicked long to "find" satellites - for some reason I expected it to be faster.
br /
br / Voice recognition is excellent with the radio off - it seems to "guess" correctly 90 - 95% of the time when you sort of tell it something that's not on the screen.
br /
br / I've taken 4 or 5 trips that are over 200 miles from my home and think that overall it's a very solid GPS. If it were cheaper and had some of the little things I outlined above I would have given it a 5.

Garmin nüvi 880 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
br /
br /This is my first GPS and overall, am enjoying it and have found it to be a great tool, especially in metro areas. I enjoy the features of MSN Direct as well. I purchased this unit in mid-July directly from Amazon. I tend to like more fully featured units as I appreciate technology. I was willing to pay more for this unit (versus the 850 for example) to try out the extra features.
br /
br /I used the unit locally (smaller city west of Grand Rapids, MI) for a week or so before I took it out of state to Virginia for a family trip so that I would gain a decent understanding of its abilities and features by seeing how it would route me to work and other known points before trying it in a larger, unknown metro area. The unit was a real help, even within the Norfolk Naval Base.
br /
br /Some frustrations:
br /Unit needed to be "reset" twice already. Once it simply locked up and the other, although it recognized and added the remote, it would not allow it to function. I followed all the instructions, new remote battery - no help. Reseting (removed GPS battery) cleared both issues.
br /
br /Internal speakers are difficult to hear and people on the receiving end mention the clarity of my voice is not all that great thru the bluetooth connection. This is true even with no radio, no fan motor, no passengers talking, etc) Like another reviewer, I am also hard of hearing and found that using the FM option does not help much for a variety of reasons. Have to really turn up the volume on the radio to even hear the nuvi and quality was not consistent. Thank you for the tip of plugging into the AUX jack, which I have on my 2008 CRV - I will definitely try that. One thing that has helped with the sound issue it that, after experimenting a bit, I am able to locate the unit on my windshield next to and at the same level as the rearview mirror. This gets the unit as close to me as possible and gives me a clear line of sight. One learning point - on some cars, the "dot patterns" on the windshield around the rearview mirror on some cars are printed on the inside surface which the suction mount will not stick to - so you have to position the unit lower and farther away. On my car, I eventually found out that the dots are within the glass which allowed me to better position the unit as mentioned above.

br /WebUpdater - I am a Mac user and had to spend quite a bit of time getting the software to recognize/find my unit. I tried using a Dell laptop as well but got the same result except that it kept telling me that I might have to change an interface setting (somewhere/somehow) to "Garmin" or "Host" which I was not anxious to experiment with. Garmin does tell you that you might have to update the software on older models (which I did not expect the brand new 880 to be !!!) before WebUpdater will work. Unfortunately, they don't tell you your options for doing such - you have to nose around. After several hours, I was able to find and get thru a back door by going thru the "Additional Software" section on the Garmin website and found a link specific to the 880 to update the software. Once I updated the software to version 3.00 (from 2.50 as received), I connected my nuvi back to my Mac and everything now works fine. Better instructions would have saved hours here.
br /
br /I am also a little surprised on how long it takes for the unit to find a sat signal. Not sure of other brands performance in this area though.
br /
br /Not sure if any make or model would do better but when in situations where one turn or instruction needs to be followed quickly with another instruction (to turn again in a short distance or stay left for example), I found that the unit would sometimes be giving the second instruction after I already had to execute the move. Other times, traveling the same route, it gave both instructions right up front so that you knew that you had to pay extra attention.
br /
br /Note to Judy - I also experienced the same "unit already registered" problem. There are multiple codes in the battery compartment of the unit that are "8 or 9 characters long". I got the same message using one number and then was successful using the number directly under the barcode. You think that maybe they could be a little more specific in the instructions on where to find the right code ???!!!
br /
br /Overall a very helpful unit and would recommend to anyone. The 850 might be the better and less expensive choice for most.

Quick review.
br /Set up was really easy out of the box.
br /Disappointed in the non yellow page feature - ie they have points of interest but they do not include everything that you can get in a GPS of a rental car. (that came with a yellow page lookup feature that seemed to have everything). However if you know the address of the Point of Interest you can type it in.
br /Really liked the on screen touch display. The voice recognition is excellent.
br /Bluetooth with my phone tends to lock up the device. Have to take the battery out to unlock it.
br /Navigation is good.
br /
br /MSN direct is ok. Best feature is the address look up on your PC that you can then send to the device wirelessly. Very nice, just a little pre travel planning required. Worst feature is the very abbreviated news. Sometimes you get the headline, click on it for more info, and there is nothing.
br /
br /Would I recommend the device...yes. Would I pay more than $500 for it. Nope.

After having used several GPS products Garmin has really outdone themselves on this
br / one. The voice recognition has preformed almost flawlessly. Any faults I
br /can attribute to myself by trying to give too much information when searching
br / for places. The less spoken the better. I have a tendancy to provide too
br / much detail for the query, which causes it to think too long. Again I count
br /this as user error. You learn very quickly the ease of use with Nuvi 880 is
br /a very natural progression. I wouold highly reccomend this to anyone
br /looking for the best.
br / I did find pricing a little less on other web sites but chose
br /Amazon.com thinking if If I had any issues they would correct them.
br / Unfortunately, they did not stock the unit as is the case
br /on many items and when I had some minor issues with the purchase
br /regarding shipping charges, open box etc. Electronica Direct the seller
br /used by Amazon did not respond to my concerns and were somewhat arrogant
br /whithout even addressing my issues. That being said, I would not let
br /this get in the way of a truly GREAT GPS. Shop around for pricing though.

I bought the Garmin Nuvi 880 directly from Amazon.com and Amazon.com was the seller. I just now got off of the telephone with Garmin and they told me the Nuvi880 was REGISTERED TO SOMEONE ELSE. As I write this the Garmin Representative is finding out the serial number and who it is registered to in order to TRY AND GIVE ME A WARRANTY. I would like for Amazon.com to respond because I now see where the NUVI is offered by another. I feel that Amazon has my registration number so just be careful to ask this question when purchasing from Amazon. I have never had this problem before. I paid more because Amazon.com was the SELLER...
br /The 880 is amazing, shows highway speed limits and your speed and even shows where the security cameras are , we don't speed but it is interesting to watch the unit and it is very accurate with voice command and it will answer your cell phone for you while driving...

I bought this GPS as an upgrade from the Garmin 350. I love my Garmin 350 and thought that upgrading to this 880 would be just as good and better, but I was wrong. The selling point for me with this unit was the speaking the name of the streets, voice command and the bigger screen.
br /I have to say the greatest feature of this GPS is the voice command. It worked very well when the car is completely silent, you cannot have the radio on, or windows down. One problem with this GPS is the speaker just isn't loud enough you can barely hear the voice prompts with the volume all the way up. I did not have this problem with the 350. There were also these annoying pops when the GPS was in voice command mode. The last is the price it's just to high for the features and the poor performance.
br /The voice command feature was so handy I tried hard to over look its down falls, but in the end I returned the unit. I will wait for the next generation of Garmin's.
Remote Transmitter Unreliable.

Voice recognition is a great idea. For the most part the unit does a good job of interpreting speech. If there is a lot of noise (even the car air conditioning fan), it can interfere with the Garmin 880 understanding what you say. The speakers in the Garmin 880 should be louder. It is sometimes hard to hear verbal directions over road noise. The FM transmitter is of very poor quality - not really powerful enough to send a quality signal to the radio antenna just two feet away. The biggest complaint is that the remote speech recognition transmitter will not activate the speech recognition mode of the Garmin 880 every single time. Many times you have to push the transmitter button up to 5 times to get the 880 to respond. I have tried two different Garmin 880s and the problem existed on both units. This is especially bad when you see a detour coming up and you push the remote to say "DETOUR" but the 880 won't respond and go into the voice recognition mode. There is no hard or soft key to activate speech recognition - only the remote transmitter. For the price of the Garmin Nuvi 880 you would think that Garmin would correct this problem before placing the unit on the market!
Awesome!

The Garmin nuvi 880 is excellent. The portability of this item makes it nicer than one built into a vehicle. One of our vehicles has a built in model; this is a better, more up to date unit and can travel with us when we are walking and touring around town. Amazon offered speedy delivery and a fair price. Other suppliers said they could sell it cheaper; the only problem was they didn't have it in stock. I had delivery of the item in 2 days and it was traveling across country in another two. The detour feature saved me many hours of sitting, stopped in traffic and had me traveling a beautiful, scenic route across Ohio. To add to the scenery, I lost no travel time. The blu-tooth feature worked, but the clarity of voice on the other end was not good. I would highly recommend the Garmin nuvi 880 unit to anyone looking for a top of the line unit.

Just completed a 7000 mile USA road trip with the Nuvi 880 as my navigator. Generally I was satisfied with its performance. Especially when in a big city. She gave ample warning when to exit and what side of the highway to be on. But here's the "but". The voice recogniztion and the blue tooth were a pain. So had I known I would have gotten the 750 instead. To me the $500 extra was not well spent. Talking to it on the road was pain - just type in all your addresses before leaving. The bluetooth hands-off at best is sub-standard quality - hard to hear and hard to talk to over the road noise. Also the Bluetooth-FM thing "Forget about it". It kept going out of range. One other thing - She could not find a single Starbucks. They either moved or shut down - Not Good.
Don't buy this for the voice recognition

I recently bought a Nuvi 850 for the only one of our three cars that doesn't have a factory nav system and for rental cars. I am pretty well spoiled by factory system integration but I figured that the aftermarket portable crowd may have figured out how to make a decent product at this point. And they have. Decent, not great.
br /
br /First, the primary value of a nav system comes from the basics. Maps, routing engine, receiver, a well designed user interface, and a great screen. Garmin does a great job with these basics. And you get all this basic goodness in even their lower end widescreen Nuvi models like the 260W or 760.
br /
br /But, when it comes to some other stuff well, they have some work left to do.
br /
br /Volume - the Nuvi 850 is barely audible at max volume with moderate road noise. I was hoping the front mounted speakers on the Nuvi 800's would be an improvement. They're not! The FM transmitter meanwhile is a pain in the butt if you're moving (why else would you need a nav unit). As you move, a previously clear FM channel may become occupied resulting in constant fiddling with the radio and Nuvi.
br /
br /Voice Recognition - it's a great concept and the 850 does pretty well but you need a very quiet environment. Doesn't sound like a moving car does it? Even in the house, with a TV at low volume 15 feet away, the unit becomes confused about what it's "hearing". Mute the TV, and tell the kids to shut up and it really does a pretty good job. Entering addresses via voice is just so much better than tedious typing. My opinion of the professional reviewers who rave about the Nuvi 800's voice recognition has slipped quite a few notches. It ain't that great.
br /
br /Garmin Features - the "Where Am I" and "Where's My Car" features are great ideas and well implemented. But again, both of these are available on the much cheaper 700 series of Nuvi's.
br /
br /Battery - the 800 series has the first user replaceable battery on a Nuvi. For about $30 you can carry a spare. Nice.
br /
br /So, is limited voice recognition and a replaceable battery worth the $300 premium over a 700 series Nuvi? Only you can answer that. Although very disappointed with the voice recognition accuracy and low volume, I'm keeping my Nuvi 850. The voice recognition still saves me from typing and a spare battery means I don't have to carry a power cord for most trips. I'll just enter my destination using voice comands in the office, hotel, restaurant, or at home before I head out. The VR remote can live in my briefcase. Less clutter for the cabin.
Very good product, but has an annoying bug

The Nuvi 880 is really cool. It understands speech quite well. (although I had to use the add on external microphone because my vehicle noise is rather high since it is a diesel vehicle.) With the microphone, as long as I speak clearly and don't speak too quickly (normal speed is fine), and leave a slight pause between words, it works very well. It has lots of points of interest (6 million), although I have found a couple of POIs that the TomTom (which I used previously) had that this one does not. Also, my neighborhood is somehow missing from the map, although it was on the TomTom map. It does have some major roads on its map that TomTom was missing, though, so I guess you just can't get everything in one unit. My main problem with the unit is a bug when trying to play MP3 audio files via voice. If I say, "Music Player" to bring up the music player, and then say, "Browse" to browse my library, and then say, "1" which is listed on the screen as display all songs, when I get to the screen showing my songs, it lists 4 songs at a time with a 1, 2, 3 and 4 next to them along with page down and back options. If I say 1, 2, 3, 4, page down or back, it makes a beep sound indicating that it understood, but then it doesn't do anything. From doing some troubleshooting I have determined that if you don't have a lot of MP3s on the device, this works fine, but the more you have loaded, the worse it gets. If you have 6 or 7 MP3 files, you'll probably not see the problem. If you have 20-30, you'll see the problem some, but not a lot. If you have about 50-60, you'll see it fairly consistently, and if you have around 300+ like I do, you will be hard pressed to get it to work at all. I have reported this problem to Garmin, so hopefully they will get this fixed. If it wasn't for this problem I'd give the unit a 5 stars. Overall it is a very cool device.

Great GPS - Outdated maps Even 2009 version

I was using Garmin SP2720 for almost three years. Last year I brought a Lexus RX400h with built in Navigation surprisingly supported by NAVTEQ, the same company support GARMIN. However, I found that the Lexus Navigation is outdated by atleast 3-4 years and is totally misleading in route calculations. So I decided to buy a Garmin 880 to keep in my Lexus. However, I was shocked to see the unupdated map in the Nuvi 880, though it has came with 2009 version map preloaded. In my town they re-directed a route with some modification to the existing route almost 2 and half years ago. I updated my SP2720 last year with Garmin's map update 2008 and this change was not in that map. Now, Nuvi 880 came with 2009 version of map and still there is no update in the route change in my city. I have no clue what they updating in their maps every year and selling it for nearly $80 every year.
br /
br /I like almost every feature in Nuvi 880. I have had no problem in tuning voice with FM transmitter though my Lexus has the FM antena on the roof at the back of the car.
br /
br /MSN Direct is not accurate though they have nearly full coverage in my area. Weather was in accurate. However gas prices were very accurate. Traffic was not covered in my town area.
br /
br /Voice command is very accurate. I have typical "Indian" accent and Nuvi 880 had no problem in recognizing my commands whereas my Lexus always failed to recognize my voice commands.
br /
br /Bottom line: Expensive unit. However, very user friendly and since a garmin it is the best amongst other brands available today. If bluetooth and voice command is not a priority for you, go for Nuvi 700 series and save nearly half or more of the cost compared to Nuvi 880. MSN Direct is not worthy for the price they charge! If your Nuvi 880 comes with a 2.x version of firmware, you will have a lot of problems. Your computer may not even recognize the unit by auto webupdater service. You should manually upgrade your firmware to current 3.x version. ***SOMETHING GARMIN TECH SUPPORT WAS UNABLE TO HELP ME***

So far I have enjoyed this product. It has proven to be very usful in areas that I do not know. My wife enjoys the voice recognition so I can still concentrate on the road and not pushing buttons on the Gps
br /
br /The bluetooth works great. When the phone rings even if its not easily reachable while driving the nuvi tells me who it is and I can answer it witht the push of a button.
br /
br /The FM transmitter works good in my area there aren't a lot of radio stations so it is easy to find a good static station
br /
br /Only real problem so far is when routing if I dont go the way it wants me to go then it reroutes, but the reroute a lot of times is just do a u turn and go the other way. so I hit the detour button and it tells me to do a u-turn a mile down the road instead of finding a different road. But that may just be a setting issue with how I have it set to route

My wife and I chose this Garmin because of the very robust speech recognition feature. We wanted to be able to drive and 'talk' to the device, because, frankly, pushing buttons while driving is distracting at best and dangerous at worst. This GPS fits the bill perfectly. I have an accent and the device still recognized my verbal commands. The interface is the typical Garmin interface, created with the user in mind. Also, the integrated traffic reciever works well, and traffic conditions in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex are fairly accurate. Routing is precise and fast; but if you're familiar with an area, it may not select your favorite back roads. Also, the area we live in is recent and many roads are not in the the latest map that came with the device. I wish there was an option to teach the device new roads, but that's ok; surely, the new map will have that taken care of. Same for the points of interest: many aren't there, and closed businesses are not reflected. But that's fine. Another thing, here in Texas, highways have frontage roads that run parallel to them, and many times the device fails to distinguish them, so you're not sure if you need to go on the actual highway, or stay on the side roads... again, no biggie. We bought this device for its great speech recognition, and to us safety was worth the price we paid. Other devices have speech recognition (some TomToms) but they do not work reliably at all (I tested one). So, if speech recognition is important to you, this is virtually the only device to consider. Btw, do not buy from internet sites that advertise this GPS for much less than here. They're all scams and try to get you with accessories. If you don't get accessories (e.g., sell you 2GB SD card for $200 instead of $20) then they cancel your order.

This is my second nuvi, passed my 680 on to a family member. Got it for the hands-free. I'm delighted with the nuvi series, except the audio for hands-free Bluetooth phone is awful. They supposedly designed the 880 with two speakers my 680 had only one. But in order to hear the party on the other end, I must have the radio down, windows up, and AC on low. And yes, I had the audio out set to 100% volume.
br /
br /Maps are Navteq with their old data (even with the 2009 software). Hands-free is great, I mounted the remote button at the bottom inside of my steering wheel for lease interference. I'm in a fringe MSN Direct coverage area, but I do get gas prices, stock reports, news headlines fairly well, and I expect coverage will only widen in time since I got the lifetime subscription.
br /
br /I may go back to my Plantonics Bluetooth headset and just deactivate the phone part of the 880, but that's the only real fault I can find with the product (and shame on Garmin for not testing and fixing this in advance). If they'd put a mini output jack on the mount for the vehicle, at least one could stick a small speaker on the dash.

The 880 is another excellent Garmin product. I previously had a C550 and enjoy the larger screen. MSNDirect is a great add on although you have to be near a fairly large city to get updates. Voice command is the biggest plus, although at times(very rare)it does have a hard time understanding certain commands. Not sure if it is caused by areas with heavy road noise or my voice. The only thing that does not work is the FM transmitter, it is scratchy and useless.

The Nuvi works ok, good points are it has the alerts on the screen so all you have to do is touch it to see the alert, the screen is clear and bright, the recalculation works quickly and is accurate. Some poor points are the speaker is not very loud, the phone synchronization is good but the speaker volume is far to low, the unit has difficulty finding satellites at times, the voice recognition for planning a route does not work properly at all, you will do better to use the screen. I had a Tom Tom and really liked the screen layout but the route calculation was not as accurate as the Nuvi. So there it is the best of both worlds.

Right out of the box the Garmin 880 works great. It is feature packed and the voice recognition works better than average. Just take in account road noise, air cond. noise and of course your radio will interfere with it working properly. I purchase Micro SD Ram, attached it to my PC and uploaded a 100 mp3. So besides the Garmin getting me to my destination it plays my mp3 through my FM radio, Place and answer call with the built in Bluetooth and volume auto adjusts to give you blow by blow turning directions. Add MSdirect link, 3mo. free and 10 bucks for an addition 6 months and you have it all. No GPS is perfect, but I think the 880 is as close as you're going to get. It a pricy unit and Garmin should include hard travel. I bought the 2gb Micro Ram with an adapter and a hard case online for $20.

Recently purchased this product for present for fiance. No problems at all and the unit works wonderfully. Not all features have been tried yet, so the review is for basic performance of navigating. The voice recognition has not been tested and the MSN function has not been activated yet.
br /
br /Pros: Directions are spot on. When taking a different route to the one Garmin calculates, the recalculations are quick and provide excellent directions on the fly. Maps are easy to see and read, and volume is more than enough to hear with music on in background.
br /
br /Cons: The Garmin voice mispronounces some of the street names. It is more of a mumble than anything, but when using it this weekend, the unit pronounced the street we needed to turn on horribly and I was a bit confused. Looking at the map on the unit showed me the correct street.
br /
br /Used the device to navigate into downtown Dallas for the opera this past weekend to an area I had never been to or driven to. We arrived at the opera house without any problems, and when I took a slightly different route to the one provided due to construction, we were provided with recalculated directions within seconds. I am eager to test the other functions on the unit, but I am very happy with this device and feel more confortable driving to areas I am unfamiliar with.

The Garmin 880 is an excellent driving aide. The graphics and audio features are superb. When positioned on a dash board, the display is easily readable in the day as well as the night. The unit's speech is clear and distinct; and the unit's response time is quick. It recalculates a new route to a destination when a turn is missed, at a rate that minimizes any deviation to travel time or distance traveled between two points.

This is probably he best portable GPS out there right now. I previously had a NUVI 660 which was also great, but without MSN Direct ot Voice Recognition. The voice recognition is terrific, and I was amazed at how it could recognize different voices with the same results. You activate the voice recognition with a button device that fastens around the steering wheel. It's a little awkward and sometimes gets in the way when I am in a turn. I compensated for this by rotating the button down on the inboard side of the steering wheel so that all you feel is the strap that holds it to the wheel. If the passenger is navigating, you have to tell the driver to push the button. It would be nice to have another button located on the passenger side somewhere. You have to turn the radio down, and close the windows for VR to work properly, but that's the nature of them all. MSN Direct works as advertized, and I especially like the Gas Prices feature. All-in-all it's pricey, but that's the way they market the new and improved items. If you want the latest, and greatest, this is the one.

I have had a Garmin 2610 since 2004. I decided to buy this unit for my wife. We both could not get the system to understand the numbers we were speaking for the address and I had to hand type them in. It was also hit and miss on names and other voice recognition tasks. I have a 2007 Highlander Hybrid so the car is quiet.
br /
br /Also, something as simple as the MPH does not show up when using the route feature. The MPH is there when you aren't routing but not there when you are routing. The posted speed of the street is shown on the screen but not the speed you are traveling. Huh?
br /
br /Garmin won't update the system with this feature even though they added the ability to choose what shows up on the screen in their newer line of GPS'like the 7x5. Yes that is right, even though this model is only 5 months old, they consider it an old model.
br /
br /
br /I talked to their customer service several times and they told me that it wouldn't get fixed in the 880 but was fixed in the 7x5 series which doesn't have voice recognition. Seems a bit expensive if you can't have all you had in an old Garmin model, 2610, plus the extras of the 880.
br /
br /I give it a low rating because Garmin has become a company with too many products and no longer listen to their customers. Consumer Reports says its the best so I wondering if they actually used it under real conditions and was tested by someone that had a GPS before.

As advertised, this is a great product. One of the things I really like is the ability to find the best price for gas using MSN DIrect. Another, is the ability to give directions to the unit while on the move, using speech recognition. One disappointment is the traffic feature which has not been aware of the traffic I've been in. Oh well, you can't have everything.
Good, but not great

I got the Nuvi 880 for my new vehicle. I decided that off-the-shelf solution was cheaper than factory installed. In my previous car (a Mazda3) I was using the factory installed navigation system.
br /
br /I got the Nuvi 880 primarily for the voice recognition feature.
br /
br /I find though that my Mazda navigation was smarter and more user-friendly than the Nuvi 880, even though it didn't have voice recognition.
br /
br /VR works well. You need to turn down the radio though so that it can understand you. There is a small library of words that it understands. But for me, VR is well worth it because the unit is placed well forward of the dash, out of reach for me. One gripe though is that when you ask to spell the location or category, it gives you a keyboard to type, and you can't 'say' the letters. That is really annoying for a unit that's supposed to be accessible via the voice commands.
br /
br /The MSN feature is ok. You can get weather info, movie times, and traffic updates. Though I don't think I will be continuing after the free subscription period expires.
br /
br /One thing to note is that there is an annoying 'clicking' sound after you pair the unit with a bluetooth phone. Don't know how to get rid of it.
br /
br /Another thing I don't like about the 880 is that it's not as smart as my previous nav system. For example, I recently entered a request to go to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Jackson, NJ from Rockland County (NY). The google route takes you down the Garden State Parkyway, to I95, then to I195. Highway all the way, for a total trip time of 92.1 mi - about 1 hour 41 mins. The 880 decided to make the route: GSP to RT9 thru Freehold NJ then to Monmouth Rd. The trip distance is definitely shorter 80.0 mi, but it was a much longer trip time with all the stop lights I had to go through. When I realized the error, there was no way to get back to the highway. I wish there was a way to program the route like my old nav system (eg., stay on highways, etc).

If your looking for a full featured, hands-free operable GPS unit, this is the one to consider. Compared to other units, this Garmin unit far exceeded my requirements. The added MSN features such as searching for the cheapest gas, latest movies, closest theatres and movie time makes the NUVI 880 AN EXCEPTIONAL CHOICE! You can voice activate this NUVI while driving, allowing you to focus completely on driving and not on making selections on the GPS. Add the fully functional bluetooth feature and your listening to your GPS' responses through your car's stereo system.

br /Make sure that when purchasing such an expensive unit that you don't forego getting an extended warranty. I was skeptical purchasing this GPS unit from certain vendors on the internet since so many had a bad reputation with customers and the Better Business Bureau. Beware with gray market offers from unreliable vendors. Gray market GPS are not generally covered by the manufacture's warranty. Stick to reputable vendors such as AMAZON. I actually called them to ensure that I was not getting a gray market GPS and the service rep provide the information I needed to assure that I wasn't being scammed. I am truly happy with this unit and my expereince with all my AMAZON puchases have been above board. All items were receive in a timely manner and factory fresh.

Purchased via Amazon for 1/2 the price of the same unit at Best Buy. 90% accurate and extremely helpful refinding the freeway ramp in an unfamiliar city or town. Need to review some route choices that could place you on a two lane vs the freeway for a more direct route. Modify as you see fit. MSN Direct useful but not available in very many places.

I purchased this unit because I wanted the MSN Direct link with updated information, traffic, etc as well as the ability to 'talk' to the GPS while driving and these features work great. Where I find my greatest disappintment is with the advanced waring of upcoming turns or exits on the highways. I have found several times the information spoken is not correct and it comes much too late to make any changes. What I mean by this is the unit tald me to stay to the left for an exit, but once we got to 20 feet before the actual exit it said to exit on the right. I also feel the announcements for turns should be given with greater distance from the turn or exit. It seems that you are always at the intersection or exit before it lets you know "This is where you turn or exit". I wish Garmin would make it announce with a little more time or distance from the turn or exit. I hope I have said this enough. Overall the rest of system seems to work well. (I was told by a friend as a comparison the 660 calculates routes much faster than the 880) I hope Garmin comes up with a firmware update to change the announcment distance to give you time to react.

First time owner of a GPS. Purchased it about 1 month ago. Used it to travel through Maryland, Pennsylvania, Washington DC - all territory unknown to me.
br /Worked perfectly. Always took me were I wanted to go. Voice recognition was outstanding. Bluetooth answered my incoming calls. Highly recommend this unit...tho pricey.

This Garmin is good because it has the speed-limit posted. The MSN option is also really handy, especially if your in a big city with traffic detours. Do you really need all of these options, maybe not, but it is a great tool.

Garmin Nuvi 880......... Really thought this would be a good one... I immediately found that their map was evidently created by someone aged 3-4...... The map was inaccurate in quite a few instances.... It misplaced some places by several hundred feet and did not show continued roads that were built at the same time.... In two cases at least it showed partial roads...... I was not happy at all with the maps. Paying hundreds of dollars for a gps and finding you can do better by just guessing (that's an exaggeration but you get the idea... ) Contacted Garmin... Their reply: It's the best they've got.... They need to get some cartographers that are worth their salt and to CORRECT their maps... DWS

Having been pleased with my Garmin Street Pilot 2720, I looked forward to the Garmin nuvi 880, with hands-free telephone, FM connection, and more. 1)It responds inconsistently to my loud voice commands, 2)the person I call can hear my voice, but their voice is too soft for me to hear, 3)if I switch to having sound transmitted through my radio, I can hear their voice but this replaces my radio transmission, and 4)I could go on with how unsatisfactory it is in all of the "advances" in this new instrument. Talking to Garmin was a total waste of time and zero help. I am seriously thinking of returning it to the dealer, but just haven't gotten around to it.

is the latest addition to GPS technology, the only negative point in my case, you do not have support for speech recognition in Portuguese, but the rest is fantastic. perfect.
