I bought returned 6 different GPS units including the Tom Tom, Garmin and a few others. First, when you enter the address (which is by far the easiest address-entering compared to any of its competitors) it knows where you want to go. It always brought me to the exact spot that i needed to find. It has over 6,000,000 points of interest compared to 1-2 million on every other competitor. it is small, thin and very lightweight. THIS GPS ROCKS!!!

They are pretty easy to use, a few too many extra steps for each address entered. The extra steps should be default settings like most GPS systems are. This allowing it to be easier and faster to enter in an address. They are small and that is great. The package doesn't come with a cable to connect to the PC and that is not a easy cable to find.

Thank you for the peace and quiet!

We recently drove round-trip from Utah to Texas. I had been to Texas this summer to help with the birth of our second grandaughter. While I was there I had to drive around Houston, My son-in-law had printed off maps with directions so I could go to the hospital and other places I needed to go. The whole time I was there I was thinking of the "Dreaded Car Trip" when we were going to go back for the baby's blessing - with my husband driving. We live in a very small town (less than 500 people) and going to the city to him means going to a city of 20,000 people. Everytime we have gone somewhere when I have to read directions to him while he is navigating traffic has led to tension, cursing (on his part)and a lot of tongue biting (on my part.)
br /I decided to buy this GPS before we left, and I have to say it was worth 10 times what I paid! It worked great and my 16 year old son was having a ball finding out all the things it could do. We went to SanAntonio, Houston, Dallas, and a lot of other places between here and there. We got off the worng exit or made a wrong turn a few times, and this wonderful unit had us back on the right road and I never heard one bad word!!!!
br /This GPS was so easy to use, and I'm so glad I decided to get it!

I am writing this review because other people reviews helped me choose the item that best worked for me.

br /The Magellan Roadmate has been great. Other then some delays when I first leave my house (because I am in the middle of the woods), it has taken me where I've needed to go. The routes are accurate, taking them the "fastest" way or the "shortest". It is pretty quick on detours and is good with Points of Interest of you dont know a street address. It is a great size, great image, and touch screen friendly. I havent used it on a very long time yet, but hope to see what it can do then.

br /I would definately recommend this item to anyone.

I was skeptical of this product just due to the price compared to other GPS systems. But, I read the review of the individuals who purchased before me and decided to give it a try. I love it! I'm so glad I didn't waste my money by ordering a more expensive GPS.

This is the best GPS system I have seen for under $200 and it's only about $132! Best value around! Works perfectly. No complaints.

The sensitivity (i.e., signal reception capability) of the Magellan RoadMate 1400 is better than GPS units that I have used in the past. The sensitivity was demonstrated by the reception, indoors near a window, of six satellite signals. Magellan has recognized that a vehicle driver cannot safely interpret a normal map display while in motion and makes use of a large turn-arrow display, voice commands, and a chime when turns are required. A negative is the inability, by my reading, to update the map data in the unit.

Why would you pay more?

This is your basic GPS device that is user friendly, reliable. We're sure there are devices with more features but at our age we're happy just to know how to get there. It doesn't say "recalculating route" if you go wrong or change plans therefore you might not know right away that you missed a turn.

My husband had trouble hearing while driving when the old gps would talk and more trouble seeing the smaller screen. This is much better for our use and will get more use when going to Oahu soon.

Very easy to use. Easily mounts to top of dash. Good display and driving directions. Great buy. Don't know why you can't get a topo version.

Pros: Accurate when working
Cons: Dashboard mount, car adapter, battery life
Thanks for your feedback
When this unit works, it works well. However, the battery life is terrible. When unplugged from car, the unit will shut down within minutes. No amount of charging will fix. In addition, you can't open the unit up to replace battery. thus, a technician will have to open up the unit and fix = $$$$.

Car adapter's cord is not a flush fit with unit. When cord is moved slightly, the unit will flicker on and off and lose your route. The dasholder also does not stay put - it falls off quite often.

Overall, there has to be a better unit than this lame one.

Have had the unit for less than a week - it now spontaneously reboots when attempting to get a satellite lock every single time! Have to ship back to Magellan AT MY COST for a refurbished unit even though I bought a new one, and they only warranty it for 1 year - once the year is up, they WILL NOT REPAIR, only offer a "discount" on a new unit. Garmin charges an outrageous out of warranty repair rate ($200 to repair a GPS that currently sells for $176) but at least they stand behind their products beyond the warranty period and build them better to begin with. It is absolutely ridiculous to spend this kind of money on something and just consider it disposable after 1 year. Pay extra for a quality product - purchase it on a credit card that doubles your warranty, and STAY AWAY FROM MAGELLAN!!!!
