This is my first handheld GPS. I'm using it for my new hobby - Geocaching. This unit works great. Use free software to download waypoints into the GPS, and then just follow where it points. The unit is small (fits in my pants pocket), and light, and has all the features you might need, including back-tracking if you make a wrong turn. It holds plenty of waypoints (locations) and 20 routes, which seems about standard for handheld units. It has several different ways of displaying navigation information, so you're bound to find one that works for you. If you're looking for something with lots of built in maps, then this may not be the right unit for you, as it only has a 2Mb base map and 6Mb for downloadable maps. For in-car navigation, I plug this little guy into my portable computer and run Microsoft Streets And Trips and get a whole computer full of maps. When going off-trail, I take just this unit, where maps aren't much help anyway. I've used it to locate 3 "geocaches" so far, and it has put me within a couple of feet every time. The WAAS support is great for getting good accuracy.By the way - don't purchase the add-on memory SD card accessory - this GPS doesn't take add-on memory cards.

I've had this GPS for five months and am extremely satisfied with it. I've never before owned a product that gets better as time goes by as this one does. Magellan continues to update and improve the software. Their latest software revision added two of my favorite functions, average speed and maximum speed. It also can show you the terrain ahead, only Magellan offers that feature.pThere is no question that it takes some study to learn all the possible functions this unit is capable of, and the users manual is marginal at best. But there are many other resources available. There's a Yahoo group devoted specifically to the SproTrac series. Folks there are willing to help with any question. I have a poor sense of direction and wanted a portable GPS unit to (1) use when traveling in unfamiliar places, and (2) to be able to map out some places by plotting points. I haven't plotted points yet, but have taken it on the road a fair bit.pI looked seriously at units from Magellan and Garmin, but decided on the SporTrak Map primarily because of its features and a ... rebate.pI have owned this unit for a little more than a month now, and really have enjoyed it. It has a nice "breadcrumb" tracking feature which will let you save a route previously traveled. It has plenty of memory for my uses, though I have not purchased map additions yet. The basic map included has major interstates, US highways, airports, cities and some other details.pI also purchased a cigarette-lighter power adapter for use on the road. The backlight feature has two levels of brightness, and I had been traveling for a little over two hours with the power adapter and the unit on "bright" when the backlight went off. It wouldn't come back on again despite pulling power, removing the batteries and reinitializing the unit (wiping out all memory). I got a return authorization from Magellan, sent the unit back via ground freight and got it back within a week, also via ground freight. The service was exceptional. Magellan even threw in a couple of goodies with my returned unit for my trouble.pI certainly recommend this unit, and the only reason that I didn't give it five stars was because of the light failure. Other than that, I have been very satisfied.

This is truly an awesome product for the price. In addition to the unit, the package includes the user manual, computer link cable, wrist strap, and batteries. The main manual is easy to follow and is very descriptive. I had the unit up and running in just minutes. After I had initialized the unit, I had had a 3D satellite signal with WAAS within 10 seconds. The unit's reception was very good. The satellite tracking map allows you to see all of the satellites and WAAS stations in your area and the signal strengh. The unit worked well under all of the outdoor situations I tested it, even under large oak trees. I was even able to maintain reception inside my two-story brick and stone house. The unit is easy to use and quick to learn. It is very easy to switch between the screens you want and the included basemap shows major roads and various points of interests across the country such as parks, airports, lakes, rivers, etc. It is very simple to zoom in and out of the map and the unit contains a handy panning feature which lets you view areas around you. Creating waypoints and tracks is also very simple. You can even designate the icon you want to represent each waypoint as well as type in notes about a specific waypoint. The unit can tell you exactly where you are to within three meters and will also tell information about your altitude, speed, heading, eta, distance, sun/moon orientation, backtrack, waypoints, etc. Every time I use it, I discover more features. You can even check the phases of the moon for your area and see when the fish will most likely be biting for anywhere on the planet. The unit is even useful for nightime operation. It has two different backlight intensities, depending on your preference. I spent a long time researching various GPS units and this is by far the best value, especially with the rebate offered by Magellan. I would definetly suggest this product to anyone who needs (or wants) a GPS unit. I can't wait to try out Geocaching!

I bought this unit about a week ago. It only took USPS three business days to get here after I ordered it. It came with batteries, a pc cable with a serial port connection(Serial port connection meaning one of those doohickies with 9 little holes and two bigscrews on the side, as opposed to a USB cable or printer port), quick setup instructions, and two manuals, one in English and the other in French. It was up and running quickly, and had a fix on my position within minutes, which maybe says something about the poor construction of my apartment building, because a friend with a similar model, the Sportrak Pro, had to go outside his brick house to get his first satellite fix.The Sportrak Map comes with a 2MB base map, and more space for loading maps that you have to buy separately from Magellan. The base map seems to have all the interstates, all the old US routes, and a good number of state roads in the vicinity of the larger cities. The map's default detail setting is medium. At the highest level of detail, you get all sorts of icons for airports, national park land, and the names of places and rivers. The sun/moon feature is nifty, giving the times for sunrise/set and the same for the moon, as well as the moon's phase. Useful for figuring out how much time you have on a trail before it's going to get dark. It also calculates the best times to hunt or fish, although I don't hunt or fish, so I couldn't tell you how accurate that feature is.What this unit is useful for: Camping, boating, Geocaching, and figuring out what direction you are heading (Don't laugh. I'm from New Mexico, where we may not have a lot, but we have terrain such as mountains and we give our streets different names. In Central Florida the land is flat, the highways are lined with identical trees from Pensacola to Tampa, the sun is often behind clouds, and, as in many places in the South, you can find yourself at the corner of 8th Ave and 8th St, when you really want to be at 8th Place.) What you won't be able to use it for: Driving directions. This is not a unit where you can plug in "Kansas City" and it will tell you to take i-75 for so many miles, then turn left by the dead cow. Maybe the mapping software, available separately, does this, but all the device itself is going to do is draw a straight line across the map and tell you how far and which direction it is.I had a hard time coming up with anything negative to say about this cool gadget. It seems very well built and I found the screens easy to figure out. I think the only way a person could be disappointed in this unit is if they expected it to be something other than it is. If you want something that is going to lay out step by step maps for you, I think you are looking for something else. (the sportrak pro has a much bigger memory and a bigger basemap, although again I think you need to buy extra map software) We're more of an "off trail" family, so all the extra mapping wasn't for us.

Nice working unit but I wouldn't buy one now. The new topo software for the sportrak units (topo 3d USA) doesn't work with the sportrak map. The older mapsend topo USA is no longer in production. Kinda stinks that the software is obsolete while they are still selling the hardware.

After lots of research, I finally decided to purchase this Magellan over the Garmin Legend. The decision was based mostly on other websites and reviews questioning the sensitivity of the Garmin. I can't say anything about that, but I know I can usually get enough signal on the 1st floor of my 2 floor house (and I'm away from any windows). In the open, I can usually get 100% signal from 6 satellites and a little from a 7th (it only needs sufficient signal from 3). It's a little bigger than the Garmin, but being an RF engineer, I know that generally, the larger the better the antenna performance. I can't wait to take mine on a hike. FYI The unit comes programmed with fairly detailed maps of the US and very general maps of the rest of the world. If you want more, I guess you have to buy the CD.pUpdate: I compared my unit to my friend's Garmin Legend and from the window at work, the Magellan did seem to perform better.brI managed to lock on to 3 satellites, while the Garmin only two.

I have been thinking of buing a GPS for over 3 years, after I heard about Geocaching a couple weeks ago it was enough to make be jump to get one. Did not know much about them in the beginning and I guess I am still learning. I paid ... for mine last week and this week it is less,... it really is quite a deal.pI like that it is small, light and compact...it seems smaller than some of the other magellans that I have seen others with. The screen is good size and the menus have been pretty simple to get around with. My 9 year old picked it up in about 15 minutes and my 5 year old used it to create a breadtrail.pYesterday I used it for the first time geocaching and it took me within 8 feet of the cache box each time. Features it does not have is average speed and more memory would be nice.pNice unit for the money

Back in March/2004, I was looking for a cheap/quality GPS that used alkaline batteries, a monochrome display, and could be used out of the box, without connecting the unit to a PC. Well this GPS was my answer! It took me sometime to find it, but the wait was well worth it! I remember stopping by Fry's, Best Buy and a number of other electronic stores and being told that I would not be sold a GPS that did not offer a monochrome display, and worst of all would not be sold a GPS under $400! I do not understand why so many people using electronics feel they need a Bazooka to kill a rabbit. Shouldn't sales people understand that not everyone needs a powerful device, and some people just need a simple unit? Well I only needed a pistol for the job and found it at Radio Shack.br Well the Magellan SporTrak Map GPS has 2MB of built in maps, which entails interstates, freeways, and highways, not to disclude airports and other points of interest. For me, I do not expect a GPS to replace a regular map, but just to be a strong add on, which will tell me my exact location when I'm traveling. This GPS unit has 6MB of free memory for detailed street maps, but the only catch is the price of the MapSend CD-ROM, which is highly overpriced. So, I do not expect to add on any detailed maps to my GPS anytime soon. I recommend this GPS to all users wanting a simple monochrome GPS unit with great battery life (15+ hours) and only need a GPS for freeway, interstate, and highway navigation. Oh one more thing for the best battery life use the Energizer Titanium cells.

I bought this unit after going through two Garmin Etrex units. The Magellan holds a signal better, and is less susceptible to damage caused by vibrations such as those encountered on a bicycle. It is larger than the Etrex units, but not significantly so.

Note that the SportTrak INCLUDES a PC cable, so don't make my mistake and spend money on one as an extra accessory.pAs to the unit itself, the display's resolution is not exactly state of the art. And the controls and menus are not exactly intuitive. But the form of the case is well designed, as described in other reviews.

It was quite a struggle for me to decide upon the Magellan sportrak Map and the Garmin Legend. In the end, I bought the Magellan because it floats and reviewers suggested the reception in forests is superior with a Magellan.pI would have bought the Magellan sooner if "somewhere" I could have found a description of the many "extras" like the compass feature, speed, how the GOTO process worked, elevation, back track features worked. It can zoom down to a 100ft scale which is something I didn't realize either. I really like the setup and attention to detail with the many of the perks included in the machine that are not described on the box front.pRegarding reception, no problems yet. Also, I wouldn't be worried about screen resolution vs. Garmin because it's clear and easy to read. So far so good. pOn the other hand, I think it's safe to temper ones expectations regarding the detail on the base map. Interstate and state roads are all there but not much more rural. I couldn't determine if the more expensive Sportrack Pro had a more robust basemap because it is larger in MB size. I just couldn't tell the difference in detail and in the end bought the less expensive version with cash saved to buy the CD map set if needed.

I bought the Magellan SporTrak to use when geocaching.(www.geocaching.com) It is great for what I use it for, which it downloading co'ords from online, and setting out to find such co'ords. I think it stores up to 500 waypoints and I find it easy to navigate between screens, and easy to delete waypoints. It fits into my hand good. We use our laptop with street atlas on it mounted in the truck to get us to a general area, and then use the handheld when we get out and hike. The screen is bright at night and easy to see. I recommend this product to anyone, especially geocachers!!

I have had this unit for a month and am amazed by the satellite sensitivity. I can pick up 2-3 in my house no where near a window. As the owner of three previous GPS units for use with a laptop, I can tell you that this one has replaced them all. It works by itself of course, and with so much information it provides, it does take a Masters degree to really know how to use all the features. The ONLY disappoint was with the built in map... mine only shows the US and major cities, but even zooming in all the way with highest detail, there are no highways or anything else. I purchased an older version of Map Send from the web for $18 and that has made all the difference... now I actually have roads and the GPS follows them perfectly. I have driven with the unit, taken it on walks and on bike rides and I can say that it is a great value for the price. I do think that the latest MapSend software should be bundled with it, however. I love maps and I love GPS and this is a great combo in a small package. By the way, the screen in full sunlight is super... no problem at all in the harshest sunlight or the heaviest overcast or tree cover. I am amazed by the sensitivity of the receiver!
br /UPDATE...I called Thanes, the maker, and they informed me that I had gotten a unit with an EU base map. To make a long story short, they replaced the base map and returned it within a week... and included batteries and a carry case. This company, unlike so many these days, gets four thumbs up from me! Outstanding product, outstanding support, great price.

I researched many different handheld GPS units through many different resources before purchasing the Magellan SporTrak Map. I have now been using for almost 3 months now, and I am very happy with my decision. I choose this unit because I wanted to be able to get the best reception in wooded areas, have accurate readings, be able to program a lot of my own locations with comments, and have pre-installed maps so that it would be easy to see where I am in referece to highways cities. I got all this with this unit without spending a lot of money. I have used this unit primarily for Geocashing though I have used while driving at times. I have not purchased any additional maps - I only have the base map that comes with it. I have read the reviews where some are disappointed with the Magellan maps. I have found the included map pretty good. Usually you might be off the road a few yards, but I have found that the maps are accurate in seeing how far you are to a particular city or highway. My only wish is that the batteries would work a little longer - but the Magellan will let you know with pretty good accuracy how much battery power that you have left and gives you plenty of warning before running out of power. I highly recommend.

I have been using this unit for 7 months now and it does more than I expected for the money. It doesn't have a lot of the frills like other more expensive models but does a lot of the same and great for geocaching! Got this GPS in the mail today and kept the box just in case I had to return it. At one point, about 5 years ago, I had an EarthMate GPS that worked via laptop, and seeing as how it wasn't that great I figured this one one simply get the job done. Long story short, I went to work (pizza delivery, I know, the prestige!) and after taking it on a couple runs, decided to go ahead and throw the box away when I got home. If this one is only an entry level to medium level GPS, the top of the line ones must throw $20 bills at you every now and then! This thing knew my exact speed, even if I was just inching up at a red light, it knew when I changed lanes even. All this in my truck with dense cloud cover and intermittent rain. It was tracking 5 sats at full reception in my living room with numerous other electronic devices powered on and didn't even phase it! I'm pretty darn impressed.

The unit itself works well, however beaware that deet will melt your unit, both the screen and the case. Also after about one year of use my SportTrac had a catastrophic software failure in the field. Apparently, the unit must have a map loaded to work as a GPS unit and my map apparently suddenly became corrupted. Currently, I am unable to load any new maps or perform a software upgrade... making my unit a paper weight. I do not know if Garmin suffers similar issues, but frankly as a life safety equipment this is not acceptable. Lastly, I found Magellan's customer service to be totally crappy...for example the customer service rep saying essentially obviously putting a chemical like gasoline on your unit voids its warranty... my response was DEET is approved to put on ones skin... I did not put gasoline on the unit... Magellan pretty much said to bad... so I would not recommend this unit.

After much e-researching, I chose the Magellan Sportrak Map for my first ever GPS for geocaching with my wife and daughter, and I have been very pleased!
br /This unit worked right away without any glitches. The manual is pretty straight forward, and the unit has a built-in Help feature that's just as good as the manual for figuring things out.
br /The Map and Compass features are really great for geocaching. And you can hook this unit up to your computer and download waypoints right from your computer to the Sportrak Map, a great feature for geocaching. Adding and editing waypoints manually is fairly easy as well.
br /It has generally placed me close enough to geocaches to make the game very satisfying.
br /There isn't a whole lot of map detail in the basic unit as it comes from Magellan, but there is enough to get you around. If you want more map detail, you'll need to buy the Magellan MapSend Topo CD or look for other software compatible with the Sportrak.
br /I definitely recommend buying rechargeable AA batteries as well.
br /For a starter unit for geocaching, I'm very happy with my purchase.

It doesn't have all the bells and whistles like much more expensive machines, but for what we use it for, it is an excellent product. Of the four hand held receivers I've used, the SporTrak Map was the first one that I used extensively and I was very pleased with it for over a year, until it quit working for no apparent reason. I sent an email message to Magellan support explaining the problem and received a reply saying that `it sounds like you'll need to send in the unit for repair.' No address or instructions were given as to where or how I was to send it. I sent two additional email messages requesting further instructions, but I never received a reply. I then phoned Support twice and was put on hold for such a long time that I gave up. Other than an inelegantly designed external cable connector and terrible customer support, the SporTrak Map would have been a very good receiver for the price. Oh, except that it failed to function after about a year.

I have been using hand held GPS units since they became avaibable. This one tracks satelites and is as accurate as any I have owned or used. Lots of navigation screens and info are available, you can customize all of the displays to see any navigation info you like. The Highway/City map that is included is very basic, this unit is not designed to get you from address to address via roads. This unit is great for navigating in the woods, desert, back country etc. If you want driving directions get one of the car mounted units that has detailed street maps and tells you when to turn. The Sportrak Map does have a few MB of free memory available that will allow you to load a couple thousand square miles of detailed maps if you buy the software. I have not had any of the problems some of the others mentioned, I have gotten the unit wet, cold, hot and sandy and it continued to work fine. It tracks under trees and in poor weather as well or better than any of the other 4 or 5 units I have owned or used. Bottom line is you can pick one of these up new on Ebay for well under $100. It beats the heck out of anything you can get new at Walmart for that price both in performance and features if you just need to navigate. But if you really need a hand held with map info I would get something else, one of the units with a SD card slot will give you unlimited memory.

Purchased the Magellan SportTrak Pro less than 3 years ago. Discovered that the additional software needed to make the device useable was expensive ($100+ fro street info, another $100+ for topo stuff). The screen is too small. This unit is better suited as a last resort emergency device. The unit, when it got a little wet, totally died (it's supposed to be water proof!). I have read that a lot of customers have had problems with the unit's case integrity. I would not recommend this product or any Magellan product to anyone.

I have the mapsend CD and have used it on many roadtrips and it's saved us a lot of aggravation especially on the way back. I really like the fact that I can store many waypoints especially to mark good fishing spots.
Very Disappointed to say the least.

I have had a Sportrak Map for almost 3 years now. At first I was very pleased with the unit. That changed about a year ago.
br /
br /The unit started to "lose" the satellite almanac. The satellite status screen would show a blank. I went to the Magellan website, and the site recommended a total memory clear. I did that and it did nothing but remove everything I had programmed into the unit.
br /
br /Next I did a software update, as recommended by the Magellan website. This made the problem worse. The unit wouldn't "remember" where any satellite was. After sending an e-mail to Magellan, I sent the unit to them for repair. Magellan said the satellite almanac had to be re-installed.
br /
br /Upon receipt of the "repaired" unit, I now found that the GPS receiver took at least 10-15 minutes to establish its position, this under clear skies with no obstructions. In addition, I found that the EPE, estimated probability of error, or how far off the unit thinks it might be, had increased from 10-20 feet to upwards of 300-600 feet. To be sure, the unit would at first, after "finding" itself, give an EPE of 10 feet or so. After about 20-30 minutes of use the EPE would climb to astronomical numbers, rendering the GPSr useless.
br /
br /There are also reports on the Geocaching.com website forums of sportraks having stress cracks on the rear where the screws hold the front and back together. These cracks compromise the watertight integrity of the unit.
br /
br /After checking the Geocaching.com website and the geocaching forums, I found this situation to be more commonplace than I had imagined. In addition, I found out about a trait specific to Magellan units called "boomerang". What this means is that after you enter a waypoint, when you navigate to that waypoint you will have to walk at least 100 feet past the waypoint and then wait for the GPS unit to decide to locate itself and track back to the entered point. Whether this is due to position "averaging" or just a bug, the result is aggravation.
br /
br /In addition, this boomerang effect means that when you try to use the backtrack feature, the unit will lead you all over the place as it has no real idea where it was, and is just making a best guess. I don't need a GPS to make a guess for me, I can do that on my own!
br /
br /I wouldn't recommend this unit, and in fact I have edited my "So you want to.." guide to reflect my disappointment with the unit.
br /
br /Don't buy it, don't even consider it. You will waste your money.

First of all, customer service is non-existant. You will be wasting your time trying to explain a problem to someone who doesn't know the NORT POLE from the SOUTH POLE! I tried talking to a rep for 45 minutes and still could not get them to understand my problem. The person could hardly speak english!

br /Try finding an icon to mark a waypoint such as a cave, swamp or anything you might find outdoors. The waypoint symbols preloaded are theme parks, airports, off ramps, rv centers etc. Don't think I've ever seen any of these on the Appalacian trail ! Anyway, it is garbage ! I'm going to look for a GARMIN and throw this piece of junk off a cliff!.

I took it jogging and it did a fine job tracking my path. I read too many negative things about the MapSend software so I tried some I found on the web (expertgps) which allowed you to download your track and plot it on a topo map and/or satellite photo. Very cool.brOn the bad side, we took it hiking in Las Vegas this weekend and it just froze at some point during our backtrack. I tried to remove the batteries but the screw that holds the battery cover on and pulls it off popped out of its retainer. It took me several minutes but I finally got the batteries out, put them back and rebooted. Guess I'll check for a code update.
Nice!

The quick start fold out literature doesn't provide enough detail to actually get started with the GPS--it's necessary to follow the manual. My unit's first screen displayed a Welcome in some Scandinavian language. The second page was largely blank except for another Scandinavian word. Then the unit went blank. A call to the 800 number yielded a 15 minute wait through a local radio station's rock music, then an invitation to leave a recorded message because no tech support was available. This was three hours before the end of their day. The call was not returned by the end of their day. An e-mail request for support has gone 12 hours without anything other than the automated e-mail replies. The FAQ and trouble shooting sections of the manual and the Website offer no assistance in diagnosing the problem.pNot an encouraging start!
