This Nuvi does several things very well, and I've yet to discover any serious shortcomings. My thoughts:
br /
br /Navigation: Excellent, as is typical with Garmin units. On a couple of occasions the voice (right now I'm using Australian Karen) told me my destination was on the wrong side of the street.
br /
br /Map: The map is clear, the refresh rate is fast, and all of the right information is provided on-screen, including details for upcoming turns and junctions, speed limit, and traffic alerts. It's annoying that I can't choose to switch the display of my current speed to some other piece of info. I already have a speedometer. The 3D buildings feature seems pretty gimmicky, and is implemented sporadically, even in downtown Boston. When there is coverage, most buildings are monochromatic blocks, and not the photo-realistic buildings seen in screenshots.
br /
br /Lane Assist: This feature has been spot-on so far. It's nice driving in a new area and not getting flustered about being in the wrong lane. I have yet to see the full-screen 3D Lane Assist Junction View shown in the many 765t screenshots -- however, I've done very little highway driving, and I believe this screen requires that the user press the top-left (upcoming turn icon).
br /
br /UPDATE: After some highway driving, it turns out that the full-screen 3D Lane Assist Junction View shows up automatically before potentially tricky highway junctions. Very nice.
br /
br /Traffic: As far as I know, I have not been re-routed because of traffic. However, it's very easy to bring up a list of major roads and their current traffic conditions, and to avoid them at will. The pop-up advertising associated with the "free" traffic is pretty subtle, and never distracting.
br /
br /Bluetooth: I'm impressed with this feature so far. It mated with my phone (old Motorola RAZR V3) easily, importing all of my contacts in the process. The ability to instantly dial any point of interest (e.g., to check on store hours) is brilliant. The volume from the speaker is reasonably loud. I also tried sending the audio to my car stereo using an audio cable, and the output seemed a bit low (I had to turn my car stereo way up). I have not yet tried sending the audio to my car stereo using the FM transmitter. I called my voicemail, and the built-in microphone picks up my voice reasonably well with the engine running. I'm not sure how well it would work with highway speeds. I'm told that the cheap Garmin microphone (which plugs into the cradle, not the unit) improves voice quality.
br /
br /UPDATE: This is true -- the microphone is an improvement, though it adds yet another long cord to your long cord collection. Also, I've tried the FM transmitter. It works, albeit with a certain amount of static. I imagine this feature would intolerable if you are driving a long way.
br /
br /Other features: I haven't used the SD card slot for anything. I haven't tried the photo viewer or the mp3 player, and I probably won't.
br /
br /Build Quality: Seems solid. The unit has a certain heft to it, and it's covered in a soft, rubbery coating. I've also dropped it already (because I'm an idiot) -- still working beautifully.
br /
br /Suggested improvements: Garmin doesn't make it easy to look up the actual coordinates (latitude and longitude) for favorites or points of interest. This information should be available at the press of a button.
br /
br /Needless to say, I'm pleased with my purchase. The 756t is not cheap right now, and if you can live without the new features, you might be better off with an older unit. That said, if you're looking for a gps device with all of the latest features and compatibility, this seems to be a solid pick.

I purchased the Nuvi 780 on Oct 1 because the 765t wasn't available at my local big box yet. Two weeks later (and after a firmware upgrade), my 780 developed a speech impediment: "Turn left at highway . . . . . 405, then turn l . . . eft." It sounded like she had to pause to either think about where she was, or to hold a fist in front of her mouth for a silent burp or something. That unit went back and by that time the 765t was out. A swap plus $100 later, I had the new unit. Pros over the 780: much faster screen redraws, faster sat acquisition, more POIs, slight user interface tweaks (all for the better IMO) and generally a tighter feel. Cons: ad supported traffic (doesn't bother me, but it might others) and no included MSN Direct. However, after using the service for 2 weeks, I would gladly trade it for faster screen redraws and the lane assist feature. Movie times and gas prices are nice, but until I can actually make my movie and dinner reservations over the GPS, I'll forgo it. The bluetooth functionality gives me the direct-to-POI dial feature, which is so utterly cool. I just moved to the Seattle area and would be so utterly lost without this gadget. It takes the stress out of driving, and that alone is worth the hefty price.

Let me start out our that I only have experience with the nuvi 200w and the 765t so my opinions don't expand beyond these two devices.
br /
br /Everything about the 765t has improved from previous versions. The nice matte black color and the textured finish really are great cosmetic touches and make this $450 device feel like $450. The mapping and navigation are in typical garmin fashion, superb. The lane guidance is VERY helpful and is the reason I bought a new garmin to begin with. It really does take the guess work out of freeway driving. I had never driven in San Francisco before and I went up there for a concert. The roads are tricky but with the lane guidance I had no problem. The real life picture of the roads pops up now and then in tricky junctions. IT does look very realistic, but quite honestly with the lane guidance feature, you don't really need to real life picture; you already know where to go.
br /
br /The media player and picture viewer are just what you would want. Music is organized by artist, album, song, and genre. Sound quality from the internal speaker is fairly good, but when you plug it into your car stereo it is excellent.
br /
br /When you put in new favorites you can assign them to different folders and categories. My old 200w didn't do this and it is very convenient.
br /
br /To be short, the unit does exactly what it should and does it well, and I believe is worth the price tag. The reason I am giving 4 stars is because when you have the unit playing music through the headphone jack connected to your car stereo, and you have your phone hooked up to it, the person's voice doesnt come through the car stereo. This is a glitch and will probably we fixed in a software upgrade.
br /
br /I looked at a bunch of gps units just like you are doing now. The most important thing is navigation, and garmin always comes out on top in every test so that narrowed my search to only garmin devices. My biggest desire was lane guidance so that again narrowed my search to the 7x5 line. I chose the 765t for the bluetooth, and will hope that feature evolves with time. IF you don't want bluetooth the 755t is your unit, if you do then give the 765t a try. If you don't like it amazon has a great return policy.
Serious Bluetooth issues

Thanks for your feedback
I will start by stating that as far as GPS functionality goes, it is decent. I haven't seen the Lane Assist feature on this yet. I will hold off on commenting on this feature, until I drive on an Interstate.
br /
br /UPDATE: Saw the Lane Assist feature yesterday evening, when I was using a local freeway. It is AWESOME! The signs match-up with what you see above head, on the road. Garmin did a great job with this.
br /
br /As far as Bluetooth functionality goes, I am truly disappointed. Garmin support likes to tout the list of approved phones as the starting point. So, if you call them they will first ask you "is your phone on the supported list?". I have two issues: I have two phones - a Nokia 6103 (on the list) and a T-Mobile Wing (which isn't). A new and popular phone is not on the list, whereas an older model is. Moving past this, my Nokia 6103 STILL had problems, even though it was on the list. The problems:
br /
br /- I can pair the phone and the GPS just fine. Problem arises when I try to answer a call from the GPS touch screen. I press the ANSWER button (that pops up on the touchscreen when the cell phone rings) and the caller CANNOT HEAR ME.
br /
br /- When I try to make a call from the GPS, the other person cannot hear me even though the GPS says we're connected.
br /
br /- The caller ID is not displayed, even though the caller is from the phonebook, Sometimes the 10-digit number is displayed, and sometimes it states UNKNOWN even though the caller exists in the phonebook.
br /
br /- Worse, the problems above are intermittent: sometimes they occur, and sometimes everything works fine. I have to say that mostly the bluetooth doesn't work as it should.
br /
br /- When I pair the other cell phone, even though I can MAKE calls and RECEIVE calls. just fine from the GPS - for some reason that phone's phonebook is not downloaded to the GPS. So, every caller listed on the T-Mobile WIng's phonebook is displayed as a 10-digit number, or as UNKNOWN. I guess I can't crib about this for the T-Mobile, as it is not yet supported. My only 'beef' here is: why is it not supported - it's a new phone, and it's one of the best-selling smartphones out there?
br /
br /- When I call support, they have no clue about fixing the above problems. They just told me to wait for the software updates.
br /
br /I will withold recommendations to buy, or not to buy. What I WILL recommend, is to wait: it seems Garmin has released this product too early, and there are some teething issues. I foresee a bunch of software updates coming in the next few months - to address these issues. HOPEFULLY!
br /
br /I will promise to post an update, if the issues listed above are fixed. If they are not fixed in the next 6 months, I wILL recommend not buying this device. Fair enough, Garmin?
br /
br /UPDATE: Garmin just released an update to their firmware (new version 2.50) about 2 weeks ago. I have been observing phone issues that I listed above. The Nokia issue seems to have gone away - so, it seems to function just fine. The T-Mobile Wing address book issue remains, however.
br /
br /UPDATE: Unfortunately, a new issue has arisen - when I did the firmware update, it wiped-out (the free 1-year subscription) MSN Direct from the device. Now, I have to call MSN to see if I can re-install it on the device. Inconvenient - and therefore, the 2-star rating remains.

I received my 765T and was anxious to use it so I darted to Cleveland. I have to admit I was curious to see the road signs on the screen which I didn't see going in spite of being on major freeways but I did see them coming back. I put on "go home" and when I was on the freeway it would have a box in the upper left corner with arrows for each lane and the ones I was suppose to be in were white and the bad lanes were grayed out (on major freeways). Nice feature. It also has the way you will be turning with the mileage in that same corner for your next turn. This is a nice addition from the 660 which only told you which way to turn 0.9 miles before. Another nice feature was there is a speed limit sign in the bottom left cornor for non-side streets. I don't know how many times I've wondered what the speed limit was in unchartered territory. As far as the FM turner issue, I didn't use it because I didn't like it with the 660. I prefer the radio to listen to music not static the lady in the box. I did notice the british lady now says drive for Dr. and not doctor. That made me crazy. I hope she says street for St. and not saint! I would definately purchase the 765 or any 5 series over the "0" series. My main gripe is it doesn't come with a case. I purchased this by Abt Tech through Amazon and am very satistied with their delievery. However, you do have to sign for the package.

Before buying this GPS, I did an extensive research on the portable GPS units available in stores such as Best Buy, Circuit city etc. After reading a lot of reviews and comparing different products, this struck to me as the one that had all I wanted in one GPS. Sure enough, this product was rated one of the top GPS products on CNET reviews next to head to head competitor Tom Tom 930, which was my first choice until I read Garmin reviews. Here is what I have looked for in GPS and this is why I would highly recommend this unit to anybody who is looking for all in one GPS at a decent price.
br /
br /Garmin nuvi 765T comes with a decent package--Bluetooth capability (it will import your contacts, history etc.) for Phone and lifetime traffic update in the covered areas (it's always good idea to check coverage).
br /
br /Satellite Catch: - One thing I am impressed with over my old Megellan GPS is quicker satellite catch and even in areas such a basement.
br /
br /User friendly: This unit is highly user friendly and probably this is why there is not a whole lot of documentation that is come with. The guide itself is located in the `help' section in the GPS. Once you know you would not read it again, it is that easy
br /
br /Via Point: - One more feature 765T has is via point addition--very useful feature if you plan to trip ahead of time OR even for a spontaneous venture. You can add places, arrange places, optimize trip and calculate the trip mileage and things like that.
br /
br /Google Interface: - Very useful, even though Garmin has pretty good number of points of interests, it still lacks some restaurants, places etc. but it makes up for it by providing Google interface as this will help you feed the places directly into your GPS from Google maps when not available on GPS.
br /
br /Browse map feature: Have you ever wondered what that road on your GPS is? All I had to do was touch the road on the screen and it will tell me what road it is. I think this is a useful feature if you are looking for a particular road in maze of roads.
br /
br /Some other good feature -- Automatic time zone update and I also like auto screen color change for maximum visibility based on day or light time
br /
br /Only ONE THING: The Bluetooth in this unit seems to be unstable as one time it did not import my contacts when I connected. But I have Motorola Rzr, which pairs just fine but make sure you check the compatibility of your phone on Garmin website to see if it will pair okay.
br /
br /Overall this is a great product and is all in one package.

I received my 765T a few days ago and love it so far. After reading some up and down reviews, I wasn't certain what to expect. I am pleasantly surprised.
br /
br /To start, the unit's volume is plenty loud, even at highway speeds. The screen is readable at all times, and automatically changes to a darkened "night mode" at night - very easy on the eyes. You can force it to day or night mode, if desired.
br /
br /The map's movement and fluidity is tremendous. It has a very natural looking motion at all times. Garmin claims the unit updates at 10fps, and it seems to be about that. I am still deciding if I prefer 3D or 2D mode yet, but both are great. I tested routing on a few trips and the navigation worked perfectly. Directions were given in plenty of time, and repeated at appropriate intervals. When just driving (not navigating) the green bar at the top displays your current road, and even displays the next exit when driving (not navigating) on major highways. This was unexpected for me and really cool! The voice on the unit is clear.
br /
br /The overall feel of the software is great. The menus move quickly and seem logically laid out. You can add categories to your favorites to better organize them. This helped a lot, since favorites are sorted by default via distance from your current location. Creating folders for your favorites works very well. You can even add a picture (and phone #) to your favorites. Very nice!
br /
br /As for Bluetooth: I paired the 765 with my Blackberry Storm easily, and everything works flawlessly. My phone's contacts transferred immediately, and I can call Points of Interest and people from my contacts easily, with 1 touch. I do not have any of the bluetooth issues described in other places. No issues at all. So I'm either lucky or maybe there is some inconsistency in the hardware. More likely, different combinations of cell phones and GPS units lead to varying results. IMPORTANT: I did update the unit to it's latest firmware, which many say have helped their bluetooth connections.
br /
br /I haven't been to an area with a traffic reception signal yet, so I can't comment on the traffic function.
br /
br / All the other niceties work well for me also: The picture viewer, MP3 player, etc all work as advertised. I even put 1 of my pics as the startup image.
br /
br /In conclusion, I am very pleased with the product so far. This is a great product that I would highly recommend.

I love my Garmin! This is my second Garmin GPS unit and I have to say that I am impressed. I upgraded from a Garmin nüvi 660 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator and this is definitely a step up! Not that the 660 is bad. It's a great GPS especially at the prices now. But if you're looking for a premium GPS, this is the one to get! And I wouldn't even consider any other name but Garmin. They are the best in the business!
br /
br /First off, the build quality on the 765t is great and the new black matte/shiny finish makes it look much more expensive. Most of the body is now rubberized except for a thin strip along the sides, top and bottom that's shiny. That offers protection against scratches on the body and the black color looks great! The large 4.3" screen is bright enough in the sun and is a big step up from a 3.5" if you've used one of those. The nuvi 765t locks onto satellites quicker than my old nuvi 660.
br /
br /As with any other Garmin, the navigation is top notch and the best among all manufacturers as many tests have proven. Not only that, the interface is the easiest out of all GPS manufacturers. How can it get any easier than two big buttons that say, "Where To?" and "View Map"? I have not had any problems with the navigation or maps except there aren't some new roads that just came within the last year. This is typical of any maps from the major map companies (NAVTEQ or Tele Atlas).
br /
br /On the map screen, the right field is now customizable and can show direction of travel, elevation, time, and more. The vehicles are also customizable and can be downloaded at Garmin.com. This is a novelty, but cool none-the-less. You can download new voices as well. The new 3D building view is also more of a novelty to me and wouldn't be that useful. In certain situations it would be, but overall, it's just cool to have. I also like that it shows the current speed limit on many streets. The data however comes from the map manufacturers and I have seen several incorrect speed limits in my area so it might not be as useful to you.
br /
br /The sound through the internal speaker is loud enough for freeway driving. You can also use the FM transmitter (which I don't like to use, but it's nice to have) or run a 1/8" cable from the headphone jack to your auxiliary port if your car has one. Also, the volume on the bluetooth is perfectly fine for me after I upgraded the firmware. Just go to Garmin.com and upgrade the firmware. It took a while to get it to pair with my old Samsung but after I got it paired, it connects flawlessly. And the volume is loud enough on the freeway. I couldn't use my nuvi 660's bluetooth because the volume wasn't loud enough but the 765t is just fine.
br /
br /Some other new features I like are the free lifetime traffic (subsidized by subtle advertising) and the lane guidance. These were the main reasons why I bought this new line from Garmin in addition to the fact that I love Garmin's navigation. Both features are really only useful if you do lots of freeway driving. This is normally where the traffic data and lane guidance comes in (even though I've seen traffic data on some surface streets).
br /
br /Overall, the Garmin nüvi 765T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator is highly recommended by me and is a great buy if you're looking for advanced navigation from the best name in GPS! If you don't need the new features, I would just get an older model like the Garmin nüvi 760 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Automobile Navigator or the Garmin nüvi 265WT 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator and save some money. You're still gonna get great navigation from Garmin. Just make sure you get text-to-speech. This is an absolute must-have!
br /
br /If you don't need bluetooth, get the Garmin nüvi 755T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator instead. If you need European maps, get the Garmin nüvi 775T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator.

Many people are reporting that the bluetooth offered on the 765T series is not pairing their phones. Apparently this is the result of some new software for the bluetooth utilized by Garmin.
br /
br /Garmin has not acknowledged this nor do they have a list of phones that even pair with the unit up on their web-site.
br /
br /My previous Garmin 660 paired fine with my Nokia phone.
br /
br /If you want the bluetooth option look elsewhere until Garmin acknowledges and fixes the issue.
br /
br /Edited 11/14/08:
br /
br /A few days ago Garmin posted a firmware update that fixed the bluetooth issue I was having as well as allowed my phonebook to download. This update is only available on Garmin Webdater. Here are the changes:
br /Changes from version 2.20 to version 2.50:
br /
br /Enhanced map drawing performance and reliability
br /Enhanced BT audio, connectivity and phonebook support
br /Inhibit display of the proximity warning over the Lane Assist view
br /Added additional checks so that Yards is used only for the UK locale
br /Updated text for the display of street prefixes in Europe
br /Corrected roundabout angle display in the next turn indicator
br /Corrected incorrect country code dialing
br /Corrected some issues that could make the unit's touch screen non-responsive
br /Corrected issue with warnings about locked GPI files
br /Corrected issue with Hungarian QWERTY keyboard layout
br /Corrected several issues with third party map compatibility
br /Added Fleet Management Interface support
br /
br /It took three weeks so I am changing my review to 3 stars

I have had my 765T a couple of months now, and I like it very much. I am about to take my first long trip over the Christmas holiday. Until now, I have used it daily around Pittsburgh, making use of the free lifetime traffic for my daily commutes.
br /
br /The two newest features added to this model, and the others in the 7X5 series, are the Lane Assist and the 3D Buildings View. If you are buying this model because of these two features, please let me give you some guidance.
br /
br /The Lane Assist is a very nice feature, but requires some clarification. Part of this feature involves a next turn arrow in the upper left corner of the screen, that shows the distance AND the direction of the next turn, unlike previous models that only showed the distance to the next turn. The graphic shows small arrows that designate which lane to be in, with the ones to follow highlighted, and adjacent ones grayed out. In addition, a graphic CAN pop up with an actual picture of the road sign ahead for the exit, and a large arrow showing the lane change required.
br /
br /However, this screen does not show up very often at the moment. I have only seen it once around the Pittsburgh metro area, but I expect I will see it on the interstates on my Christmas trip. But that does not take away from the very valuable upper left screen turn graphic, that is very useful. And, I would expect that the screen showing the road signs will be more fully implemented in future map updates, so I am glad I have a nuvi that will be able to take advantage of that.
br /
br /The 3D Buildings are not all that fully implemented either. I see them in the downtown Pittsburgh area, and occasionally elsewhere, but have not been able to determine what causes some buildings to be in 3d and not others. After the novelty of the first few days, this feature has little appeal for me around my area. Perhaps I will encounter this outside my area on my trip, and see more use for it.
br /
br /As it stands, I would not buy this unit just to get that. On the other hand, it comes on this and other models with the Lane Assist mentioned above, and I would highly recommend that feature.
Nuvi 765T Observations

Thanks for your feedback
After waiting a long time to buy a GPS and reading many, many reviews while watching the prices go up and down, I finally pulled the trigger on a Nuvi 765T on Thanksgiving morning when I saw the price drop to $349.00 on Amazon with free shipping. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price and couldn't buy it fast enough. Especially since at the time, the lowest price I had seen was around $460. Although it had the features I wanted, I had some reservations about getting the 765T because of several reviews that listed problems with the screen, speaker volume, bluetooth, missing features from the 760, etc. So after putting it though its paces for a few weeks I would like to share my observations with this unit. First off I have to say I couldn't be more happy with my purchase. In the past I had used the Nuvi 350, and several different TomTom's as well as rental car units, and this unit blows them away. The first thing I did was to up update the firmware to v.2.50 and had no problems in doing so.
br /
br /Screen: The screen on the unit I received is very bright and clear. The colors look great and it is just as bright as the Nuvi 350 I had used. The sensitivity on this screen is fine and there is no problem with the calibration for buttons, etc.
br /
br /Sound Quality: The sound from the speaker is very good on this unit. Could it be louder? Sure. But in normal driving with the radio at regular listening volume and /or the windows open, I have no trouble hearing it at all when set to 100%. When driving without the radio, I actually turn it down to 80% as it is too much. The navigation voice (have tried several and like Australian Karen) at 100% is clean with no distortion. From some of the reviews I had read, I was expecting to have to hold it up to my ear to hear it, but it really is fine.
br /
br /Bluetooth: This was one of the things I was worried about not working, but surprisingly the Nuvi immediately paired with both my, and my wife's older Sanyo Katana phones. It also shows the phone books and the contact names for both phones. In making calls over the Nuvi, the people I have called state that the voice quality is fine and there is no echo or distortion. Although I don't use my cell phone a lot, when I do, its great not having to hold the phone and drive at the same time. Very happy with this feature.
br /
br /Traffic: I was really surprised on how accurate the traffic feature on this unit has been so far, as I wasn't really expecting much. Perhaps the coverage is better in the Chicagoland area then other areas, but it has accurately shown where there were slow downs and congestion ahead on I-90/94, I-57 and I-355. The "ads" for the free traffic pop up from time to time, but I rarely notice them and they certainly are not in the way or distracting at all.
br /
br /Routing: So far, with one exception, the routing has been really spot-on. The navigation has brought us to our unknown destination with no problems, and takes the routs I would normally take for the places I am familiar with. It even knew that our home street is divided by a drainage ditch and instructed me to go past our house and make the correct two left turns to get into our driveway when arriving on the opposite side of the street. This really surprised me! It did one strange thing though, when driving home from Chicago going south down the Dan Ryan expressway, I need to eventually merge west onto I-57 south, and for some reason, the Nuvi kept telling me to get on the Indiana toll road and go east, which would have taken me miles way out of my way. I should have brought up the turn list to see where it was going to take me, but I was in heavy traffic with bad weather and needed to keep my eyes on the road. Once I passed the exit for the Indiana toll road it "recalculated" and took me home perfectly. The only thing I could think of was that I had "Avoid Traffic" enabled and there was some heavy traffic on I-57 ahead which it may have been trying to avoid, but I'm not sure. I will turn off the "Avoid Traffic" feature and try it again the next time I travel that way.
br /
br /Other Features: I love the Lane Assist, and the Junction View has come up many times in the Chicago area which is a big help. I have not tried the FM transmitter yet which a lot of people complain about not working well. The picture viewer is nice and I have loaded some pictures on it and taken it to friends houses and used it to show them vacation pictures. Since my car radio plays MP3's I don't have much use for the MP3 player as of yet but will try it out in the future. I loaded several POIs for various places and they work great too; giving both audio and visual prompts within set distances of the POIs.
br /
br /I could go on and on, but those are the main things I wanted to share. I had read about some early complaints with this unit, especially with the pre v2.50 update, so perhaps I just go lucky with this unit, but so far I could not be happier with it!
br /

This is my fourth Garmin product. All have been excellent, but the 765T adds some great new features. The "lane assist" feature is wonderful when you know you need to turn but aren't sure if the turn from a multi-lane highway is a left or right. In addition, the 765T has much more realistic mapping images than any I've owned previously. I use the MSN direct service with my 765T, but it also comes with lifetime FM traffic for those who regularly drive in rush hour traffic. I highly recommend the 765T for people looking to upgrade from an older product.
Not worth the upgrade.

The lane assist is almost useless, which is why I upgraded from the 760. Lifetime traffic is about the only plus over the other models. I do like the ease of use, screen brightness, mp3 player.
br /Bottom line, if you have the 750 or any other 700 series, it's not worth the upgrade.

I was just modestly impressed w/ improvements on the 765T while using it here in Colorado's front range--not really enough to justify the cost. However, the lane change indicator saved my sanity during a recent 3 day trip to San Francisco and East Bay. As a BOF (boring old fart) w/ lousy night and distance vision, thee 765 T was great

I bought this unit after trying (and returning) both the Garmin Nuvi 205W and the Garmin Nuvi 265WT. This unit is superior in every way. I appreciate the unit's full set of capabilities. It does what they do plus adds the "which lane should I be in" for freeway driving (really needed here in California where we have lots of freeways with lots of freeway interchanges), plus many other features. The pronunciation of street names has been flawless. Complaints about the display are unwarranted: the device ships with the brightness set at "20%" whereas the other Garmin Nuvis ship with the display brightness set at "100%." 20 seconds with the unit rectified that complaint. I also appreciate its ability to find nearby restaurants, shopping, gas stations, hospitals, entertainment, bars, and almost everything else anyone might need. Where I have had problems is with the Bluetooth: I have spent only a few minutes trying to get it to pair with a Blackberry 8300, but so far unsuccessfully. The unit also maintains the ability to display and provide verbal directions using many different languages.
Actually 3-1/2 stars for this "Made-in-Taiwan" GPS powerhouse with glitches.

I'm going to try to make this review as short as possible (knowing I'm far too long-winded). I'll placed my full, expanded review in the comment section after this review is up (for those who may be interested). I didn't want to subject people to a long, boring review (unless readers specifically wanted to see it and sought out the comment section). Just remember, your experiences may differ from mine for a variety of reasons, including where you live.
br /
br /Pros:
br /
br /1. Great new feature set, especially hotfix and lane assist (coverage varies), lane assist is a terrific aid for anyone traveling complex freeway interchanges.
br /2. Solid construction and attractive,
br /3. Garmin trademark: simplicity even with a unit with a lot of bells and whistles,
br /4. Nice map screen that's not at all overwhelming,
br /5. Free (ad supported) FM traffic (simple, easy to understand and informative), automatically reroutes you when there is heavy or stopped traffic,
br /6. Automatic time zone change,
br /7. Turn arrow now available on map screen,
br /8. Ability to customize "arrive" window with 1 of 5 different settings,
br /9. Many other bells, such as "Where am I / Where's my car", kwerty keyboard, powered cradle, better map update policy, posted speed limits, and multiple-point routing just to name a few.
br /
br /Cons (even after the update):
br /
br /1. FM transmitter is junk and unusable in high volume FM traffic areas such as SoCal (this is a well-known problem with ALL Nuvi units),
br /2. Bluetooth problems (varies depending on your cell phone), callers hear their voice when talking to me (echo / feedback), couldn't download and create phonebook from my contact list, constant troubles pairing phone,
br /3. Getting started and registration was kind of a PITA,
br /4. Screen no better than my 260 (although a bit brighter), washes out quickly when tipping it down, darkens gradually when tipping it up or side to side,
br /5. Flakey touch sensitivity even though it was suppose to be fixed with the update, touches don't respond at times and accuracy can be all over the place,
br /6. Speaker volume not as loud as my 260, but I find it adequate,
br /7. Can't input more than one phone number when creating an address, this part of the input scheme not well engineered, and trying to get back to the main menu is cumbersome,
br /8. Garmin continues to refuse to give customers the ability to exclude a particular road/street/highway (even on their top units),
br /9. 12v adapter very difficult (for the first several times) to seat into cigarette lighter or auxiliary port (it's okay now, however),
br /10. Typically bad and uninformative quick-start manual (haven't bothered to downloaded the standard manual because past experience tells me it's not worth the effort).
br /
br /I REALLY like this unit, and it is a GPS with a whole slew of new features (hotfix and lane assist are especially wonderful, and the traffic feature could really help), but this unit has several frustrating problems that just shouldn't be there. However, it has so many solid advantages over my 260 that I rate it a bit higher than I did the 260 and give it (between 1 and 10), a marginal 7 (or barely 3-1/2 stars -- since I couldn't do this, I decided to give it 4 stars instead of 3 because of certain features that are really great). If Garmin would have tested this a bit more thoroughly and not rushed it out the door (and not use us as beta testers) and caught some these problems, I wouldn't hesitate to rate it a 9 (a marginal 5 stars). Hopefully, Garmin will resolve some of these issues quickly, but the FM transmitter will remain pretty much hopeless.
br /
br /UPDATE: Since I posted this review, I have returned the 765t because of screen touch problems (drove me crazy and it's not all that safe to be messing with it while driving). My replacement unit will arrive shortly, and hopefully won't have a problem.
br /
br /Note: New unit came and the touch screen problems are far less severe. It's still a bit quirky on occasion, and is not as sensitive as my 260, but I find it adequate for my use.
Good GPS unit, but not perfect

[[ASIN:B001ELJER4 Garmin nüvi 765T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator]
br /Got this unit from Amazon for $350 and tried for several days.
br /The good:
br /1. GPS function works quite well in most cases.
br /2. Lane assistance.
br /3. 3D buildings.
br /4. MP3 player.
br /
br /The bad:
br /1. Bluetooth does not pair smoothly with my Siemens S56 even after firmware update, require repeated attempts for pairing.
br /2. Bluetooth connection drops during dialling or after reset the power.
br /3. Lose speaker sound after dialing through bluetooth.
br /4. Paring bluetooth phone triggered the unit power reset.
br /5. Suddenly lose tracking of satellites during driving and take a while to get back.
br /6. American "Jill" speaks the street names incorrectly, even cannot speak "Take the ramp" correctly.
br /7. The FM transmitter is too weak to be useful.
br /8. Could not recognize the fast route with synchronized traffic lights as fast route.
br /
br /In summary, most of the problems are bluetooth related. Wish the next firmware update could resolve these issues.

I love my Garmin nuvi 765T. I am a full time RVer and I use it all the time. It is great. The seller delivered as promised except the expedited delivery was slow. But they refunded the cost of it.

I recently purchased a Gramin 765T.
br /Generally it works Well. I find the Volume on the unit when I get a call on my Blackberry Pearl is too low.
br /Also I was in Weston, Florida and when I was approacing my Hotel the unit would keep shutting down and resarting all the time in the same spot each time. Once I move out of the General area no problems.
br /On my last day it also did it in another area.
br /I would be interested to know if anyone else experienced a similar problem.
good device with good features but with the awful screen compare to the two years old Nuvi 660

My wife using a two(or something like this) year old Nuvi 660 and I bought for myself new 765. There is no real black color like 660 has, sharpness even worth and all fingerprints are visible. And the speaker of 660 is also much louder and clearly sounded then 765. Twined price for just a lane assistance....too much.
Not user friendly, ugly graphics.

Just paid a 10% restocking fee, plus return shipping on this device, it is that bad.
br /This map display looks like it is 15 years old. Not impressive at all. OK it's ugly.
br /Pros:
br /It does pair nicely with an iPhone and uploads the address book. You can add more than one phone and choose the one you want to use with a few clicks.
br /Great spoken voice choices. I like the Aussie female.
br /Complaints:
br /Must hit AGREE every time before using.
br /You cannot display both the distance remaining and time remaining at the same time. Same for elevation, direction, only one display at a time.
br /My biggest complaint, is searching for a destination. Very slow. Ten seconds for a restaurant in a city near here.
br /And the way cities are listed is maddening. You might think it would allow you to choose the biggest city or the closet city but no, you get them all in "alphabetical" order. Although the following list is right off of the device and does not make any sense.
br /Here is what a search for Boston displays
br /Boston, AR
br /Boston, KY
br /Boston, KY
br /Boston, KY
br /Boston, KY
br /Boston, KY
br /Boston, LA
br /Boston, MI
br /Boston, MO
br /Boston, NY
br /Boston, OH
br /Boston, OH
br /Boston, OH
br /Boston, PA
br /Boston, TN
br /Boston, TX
br /Boston, VA
br /Boston, VA
br /Boston, VA
br /Boston, MA
br /Four screens later I get to the biggest city and the nearest one. Not a typo by the way, it really list Boston, KY five times. Not sure how Boston, MA is listed after Boston, VA.
br /So I tried searching Boston, MA. No results found. So no workaround
br /Worse yet, some towns are listed as a Township. So for example, I wanted to go to Andover, Ma. Should be easy enough but Andover, Ma isn't listed. I had to scroll down 6 pages to get past all the Andovers, plus all the Andover Estates, etc to get to Andover Twn, MA.
br /I called and complained to Garmin that they should allow me to list them alphabetically OR choose to list them by proximity.
br /It was like talking to a brick wall, he couldn't grasp what I was telling him.
br /He said make a map error report on their website. I mentioned that would take a year or two and I would have to pay for the update.
br /I said you could easily fix it with a software update that allowed for listing by proximity.
br /I am probably going to eat the 10% restocking fee and mail this dog back.

The unit is one of Garmin's high units with many features. Garmin's website suggests the price is $599.99 not the $649.99 suggested by Amazon. I bought mine from Meijer for $438.77 with tax and shipping included.

Garmin software dept says that the additional maps offered for the 765T will NOT have lane assist and 3D mapping no earlier than end of 2009! So if you need a gps now and want to use it in other places besides the pre-loaded maps, forget the 765T till next year; instead, save your money and buy the 760. Same unit without the added functionality won't be useful till later anyway.
br /
br /AMENDMENT 20OCT2008: Let me clarify to all- I BOUGHT THE 765T UNIT AND THE AUSTRALIA ADD-ON MAP ON SD; FOUND OUT THIS MAP DOES NOT PROVIDE LANE ASSIST AND 3-D BUILDING REFERENCES; AFTER CHASING DOWN 4 TECH REPS WHO GAVE CONFLICTING INFO OR "I DUNNO", FINALLY CONFIRMED W/ GARMIN NONE OF THE ADD-ON COUNTRY MAPS HAVE THE LANE ASSIST OR 3-D BUILDING REFERENCES AUSTRALIA WILL "LIKELY BE UPDATED AT END OF 2009."
br /
br /As for the rating: 1) The product does not do what the literature says it would do (and more importantly its limitations); 2) I recently moved to Sydney and paid the premium for the 765T specifically for added functionality, eg., lane assist. 3) I had to really beg Garmin just to confirm what I was experiencing after paying full retail for this item- poor form, Garmin; hence the 1-star.
br /
br /That said, I'm not sour on the company or the 765T. Garmin makes good units and their nav engine is one of the most accurate and quickest. I would've appreciated clearer marketing and specifications material, though, thus saving 5.75hrs of my life trying to troubleshoot and talking to tech support.
br /
br /I'm going back to the 760, which is the original unit I researched, but chose to forgo to try the 765T. I need a gps that works now, not "likely at end of 2009". It's too bad I had to find out the hard way the added functionality doesn't work there for now. My mistake hopefully is your gain.
br /
br /21OCT2008: And another thing- Garmin also admitted these added functionality features - lane assist and 3-D buildings refs - "may not work on all roads" with the pre-loaded USA map and even less so on the 775T European map. When I pressed him, he said, "In fact, the vast majority of roads won't have the lane assist layered into the pre-loaded maps; only the major ones. But, I can't tell you for sure. It's a new technology and none of us here have a working device to try." Ooookay, then... mov'n on... Well at least I got to talk to a US citizen...
br /
br /Take what you can from this and a dude who bought it and went thru the pain of "tech" support.
